I think this thread is really mean. I am American. My husband is in the Marine for 18 years. Please dont bash a country. There are a lot of Americans on Chazhound. Why would you want to create a riff between people. Whom ever started this thread, is ill hearted.

You guys realize that without the US, you'd never be chatting here anyway?? I mean it was Al Gore that invented the internet :)

The thread wasn't started out of ill-will, just out of honest curiousity . . . nothing wrong with that. Most everyone has been very good at separating their personal feelings about people from nationalistic generalizations.

Just the title of the thread sets me off. I dont really understand it.
I actually think that it's a good question, and I find it very interesting to know what other citizens from other countries think of the US. I found it interesting when visiting other countries how little people talk about the US. I'm certain that the person who started this tread meant no ill will at all and was just curious as some of us are.

If this thread bothers you, why do you come here? I love to hear what the world community thinks. I would like to hear what people think about me, what they think about the company that employs me, the family I belong to, the state I live in and the country I live in. It wont all be positive. It will likely be negative since for some reason it is easier for people to see the bad in things than it is to see the good in things. When we look at what others say objectivly, we can improve. Listening to others while filtering out junk is a fine art, and mastering it can improve every aspect of life.
We americans created our government and we are responsible for its choices. I know many people will argue that point, but as a whole, america carries out the will of its people, just like every other society on the planet. Making the world community mad is not a good thing, but much worse is to make them scared.

I have lived in other countries. Some get the big picture and some dont. You forget we are a very new country. We are all about freedom. I saw a Japanese women slapped in Japan for talking about WWII. Why? Dont judge a country by what you see on the news. I can say in 18 years of my husband being in the military, he has never been to war. He has done more humane efforts than anything else. You never hear the good. Who is always there when a disaster strikes? Hmm think of that.

I lived in Japan for a year and a half and never saw anyone get slapped by anyone. All of the Japanese I spoke to were very respectful of American culture and Americans but felt it was time they moved their military bases out of Japan. I agree. It's not the same country it was during WWII.

People always hear about the bad because that's what they want to hear and that's what they remember. We can fill our newspaper with 30 pages of good news and have one bad story and what do you think people will be talking/gossiping about for weeks? We had some political drama earlier this year and people kept telling me 'we need good news we need good news' well we had put good news in for weeks and the political news hadn't been in for weeks but that's all they remembered. That's just how people are.

They want us to move our bases out of Japan but as soon as that nut case in North Korea starts threatening with his nukes, they'll be glad we're still there to defend them. That's what the US is, the defenders of everyone. Something happens, it's the US to the rescue. I'm not saying that things like Iraq are good- I personally hate the fact that we are there, we have brought the country to the brink of civil war and have make the region much more unstable than it was, but that is not the fault of our military, it is the fault of our leaders who have their own greed based agenda. Think about this- whenever there is a UN "peace keeping force", why is it 90% US forces and 99% US funded and armed? Why don't the other countries pony up too? Because they are unwilling and unable.

Under a Rock in the USA!
Wow, this was an interesting thread.

Land of the Free??? Tell that to the Native Americans whoes land was forcibly removed from them so that beautiful forest and plains could be turned into industry, tell that to the people who loaded the immigrants guns while they shot the buffalo day by day. That flag is on sacred land people!
This is the most beautiful post I ever read in a public forum. Kudo's!! :D

AND.... not only that but if the US doesn't come to their aide....People complain that we aren't doing enough to help everyone else. you can't have it both ways. Either we do what is nessecary or we don't.... but don't complain when we do the nessecary things and then turn around and complain that we aren't doing enough to help.

I never could understand why people wanna bring back old threads that might have been better off left in the archives. This thread was an innocent question from the op.. and it escalated into so much more. Lots of people got offended and their feelings hurt. I think some threads are just better to let die, and this might be one of them.
