It was not a snap decision to get a puppy. Obama first mentioned it at the start of the campaign, and said he and his family had discussed it before. They simply decided to wait until the election was over. He had said on CNN that his kids want an active part in raising the puppy, which would not be possible while campaign traveling.

But it can NOT be a shedding breed or one with excessive dander b/c one of his daughters has allergies. That rules out shelter mutt of unknown mix, APBT, and a lot of other choices.

you said you wanted entertainment ?
Maybe poor word choice but why get hung up on "entertainment"? To me it's not about "entertaining" ... but it is nice to see how dogs humanize presidents. A dog just plain doesn't give a rat's ass who the heck its owner is, or what position they occupy. My newspaper ran a series of three photos a while back that showed G.W. Bush attempting to get his Scottish Terrier, Barney, into Air Force One. It was supposed to be just a normal photo op of a trip. But Barney apparently had other plans, and if you saw the photos it was pretty clear that it was not staged.

First photo showed Bush waving while leading Barney on a leash, he wasn't even paying attention to Barney. Next showed that Barney had stopped and sat, Bush's expression was puzxzled dismay, and he could be seen reaching into a jacket pocket. The third picture showed Bush partially bent at the waist, holding out a treat of some sort ... but Barney was not falling for it. He had that heels-dug-in determined Scottie pose that says "Forget it, moron ... I'm not moving." :D

There was no fourth photo, but it was said that Barney finally had to be picked up by a Secret Service agent and carried onto Air Force One. Also mentioned was that Barney had flown before and was not in any distress. Barney had simply decided, for whatever 'terriertude' reason, to stop on the tarmac and absolutely refuse to move forward.

All dogs shed and all dogs have dander. The only thing that's different is the varying degrees.

If one wants a dog that doesn't shed, I suggest going to Toys-R-Us and getting a stuffed one.

I wasnt hung up on the word entertainment...so maybe go back and read what what I was actually saying

I was hung up on the fact that BM was the ONE that was saying they need a pet they need a dog and blah blah blah and now that they are getting one she changed her tune and blah blah blah and contradicts every single thing she says to fit that days feelings

I bet it's some sort of Crap-a-poo or Shiznit-a-Poo or something along those lines. No offense, but that's a man I envision with some littly frilly dog at the end of a leash. (& no I'm not being mean, it's just what I see)

So you're saying that someone's sexual identity is tied up in what type of dog they have?

Whoa ... guess I missed that .... previous thread perhaps, can't read 'em all. (Don't recall seeing the "entertainment" thing in this one except what you quoted ... so perhaps that was from a previous thread? )

What confused me was the question about "what happens to the dog in 4 - 8 years?" I'm kinda with Nolu on that one ... to quote Nolu:

It gets sacrificed. What do you think is going to happen to it? It'll have a home till it dies, just like my dog does.

GR, it was from a previous thread I think. BM changes her stories a lot, it's been outed here many a time..

The thing is, she has to find some way to criticize Obama, and beforehand one of the things she disliked about him was that he was "less trustworthy" since he wasn't a pet owner. Now that he will be a pet owner, there goes that argument, and here comes another: the decision was too sudden (refuted many times) and he has a throwaway mentality (no proof), so perhaps the dog will be dumped when he leaves the office.

I think its great they are getting a puppy. Hopefully a rescue. As for breed, I hope they get something that they can actually handle.

What, so everyone on this board is allowed to buy a dog, but he's not......?
Yeah, I don't get it either?

Anyways, I hope he gets something that suits his family. That's about all I can say on the subject because I don't know what he wants in a dog other than he has kids and low shedding. maybe a cute little bichon?

I'm happy that he is getting a dog, as I would be for most people.
But I don't get what is wrong with buying a dog from a responsible breeder either.
However, him getting a rescue dog might be "paving the way" for other people to get rescues, too.
