Renee. ROFL.

I'm not breaking rules.. so.... I want a dog with 17 OTCHs! 18, actually, but 17 will just have to do.

Nolu, your new avatar makes me hungry. I keep thinking of grilled sea bass.
LMAO! They're not fish, they're SEA KITTENS! God, Drmom, your continual use of anything other than "sea kittens" when referring to sea kittens makes you so much more likely to be cruel to them and eat them. ZOMG DON'T EAT TEH SEA KITTENZ!

And here I'd be happy with a CD.. heck one leg of a CD would thrill me. If only I could be so high and mighty to get 17 OTCHs and be better than apparently anyone else in the US and be able to do it magically so there's no trace. Nolu, can you make me that magical? Maybe I should ask Obama for his magical powers :)

I shall. *waves wand*

VOILA! Fifteen OTCHs! (Maybe next time I'll do it right and you'll get the full 17.)

I hope they get a purebred or a really, really mixed up mutt because I'm sure if they get a "-doodle" then the BYBs will go to town. "Get a dog just like the president's!", etc. :( Hmm, I guess a purebred would kick the BYBs into gear too, though.

The priority, she says, is that the pet the Obamas pick is comfortable with children and impeccably behaved at all times, particularly with visitors.

"Can you imagine the dog jumping on Putin, or lifting his leg and peeing on the curtains, or nipping at Gordon Brown?" she says.
Good luck finding a puppy like that, Oprah's crazy dog-trainer person.

Maybe they'll actually adopt an adult dog (which would make more sense, IMO.)

"In the end, whatever name the Obamas plump for, Ms Geller says, she just wants to see a crossbreed rather than a commercially-bred pedigree pup as top dog."

This just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Commercially-bred pedigree pup?! WTF. I really, truly hate that it has become popular to bash on purebred dogs, and give them a snobby image.

I would LOVE for Obama to rescue a dog - but for the love of JESUS - call it what it is, a Golden x Poodle mix, or just refer to it as a "mixed breed", "mutt", etc. If it is truly from rescue, it's parentage could be debatable, anyway. Poo names are just ridiculously silly, not to mention, referring to them in their DD name will give crappy Poo breeders so much more business than they already shockingly get. D:

Hmmmm, has their EVER been a first dog that was NOT a pedigree?

I think you are a little early in claiming reverse discrimination. What ever they decide will send a message, and the most important message we can send is for families looking for a companion dog to start first at the local shelter. That message has never (so far as I know) been sent from any first family.

I agree with you on this. Whatever they get, thousands of people will want the same dog. I am sure they can easily find a hypo allergenic pup with a great temperament from a shelter...I got one.

Then, as you suggest, just call it a mixed breed, or how bout giving it a new name, "Obamadog" or "Obamutt" to designate any of the millions of wonderful dogs and cats waiting for new homes at your local shelter.

You TOO can own an Obamutt!

So long as those Obamutts come from shelters or rescues . . . I have a horrible vision of people trying to mimic whatever the dog looks like at mills . . . .

Mike pointed out that if Obama got a dog like Sarama, who is pretty unique looking, people would probably immediately try to breed dogs that look like her. Mr. Obama needs to make a big point of the fact that the important thing is the rescue, not the dog.

Um.. no. I actually think you misunderstood. What I believe Erica was referring to is the crappy, stereotypical image that people with purebreds have.. that they are somehow 'snobs' or that 'all purebreds come from puppymills.' SO not true, but I have heard both of those myths time and time again. Erica was actually referring to someone else's (a reporter maybe) comment when she said that, and we have no evidence that the Obamas have said anything of the sort.

ultimately, whether it's purebred, shelter, mixed breed, etc...the message that should be given is that each family should find the right dog for their home. What's right for the Obama's would not necessarily be right for me....I hope this message is put out there.
