Yeah, I don't get it either?

Anyways, I hope he gets something that suits his family. That's about all I can say on the subject because I don't know what he wants in a dog other than he has kids and low shedding. maybe a cute little bichon?
My stance on this is that I would prefer them to get a mutt because I don't want people to go out and buy a certain breed because they've seen the kids with the puppy and it's oh soooo cute. I'd rather people go "aww, look at the mutt.. it's so cute! When we get a dog we should consider getting a mutt!"

Maybe I'm hoping for too much though, and people will think whatever kind of dog they get is adorable and they want one.. or maybe I'm overestimating the public and they won't give a d@mn what kind of dog the Presidents' family gets.

I think its great they are getting a puppy. Hopefully a rescue. As for breed, I hope they get something that they can actually handle.
yea me too.. I think they are both first time dog owners.. ( not sure though.)

However, him getting a rescue dog might be "paving the way" for other people to get rescues, too.
Yep, that's the reasoning behind it ... and does have a basis. I recall the surge in interest in Chocolate Labs after Clinton got Buddy.

Sadly though, had read that Buddy got HBC after they moved to upstate New York ... after a workman doing repairs on their house had left a gate open. :(

The announcement comes after summerlong campaigns to persuade the family not to get a goldendoodle, which the Obamas considered because the breed is hypoallergenic. The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to the Obamas saying getting a purebred would be elitist
From the article Ali linked.

So Doodles are a purebred now according to PETA?

At least they have said that they want to rescue , so they won't be bashed by people for buying one .

Aww really? Stupid BSL strikes again :'(
yea we fought it.. I fail to see the logic in this but we know it also spreads to other breeds so fight BSL...Also if you think Iraq is bad, DC is horrid.. Its terrible- several murders a week.. And weekends are worse.

Maybe they'll get a poodle or a maltese.

If I sent Obama a letter about how to pick a good breeder (or rescue) do you think it would actually get to him, or do secretaries and such intercept letters? Sooo many people in the public spotlight have no clue how to choose dogs, I don't want to see yet another person go to a BYB or worse, a puppymill.

A rescue dog would be great for the White House! Hopefully some rescues with hypoallergenic breeds will get in contact with him.

Again, not likely.

One of their daughters has allergies of the kind that means their prospective dog MUST be a non-shedder/low-dander.
So they considered a DOODLE?!

Seriously? I can't tell you how many of these we groom at work that shed worse than ANY purebred Golden :(

Sure *some* of them are low/no shed, but it totally depends on what coat type they inherit.

All dogs shed and all dogs have dander. The only thing that's different is the varying degrees.

If one wants a dog that doesn't shed, I suggest going to Toys-R-Us and getting a stuffed one.
I know that is true, but I've got to say, I lived 15 years with my Bedlington, and I don't remember ever picking up a stray hair. There are some breeds that don't really shed their coat off their body at all.

Different breeds, same experience. Parents' and sisters' schnauzers don't shed any to any visible degree. (But the GSDs shed .... Shed. A. Lot.) Same with SIL's Shih Tzu and cousin's Cairn Terriers. Our Westie doesn't shed either ... I recently picked him up while outside wearing a black suede coat. There was not one single hair ... and he's very white so if anything shed it definitely would have showed on black suede.

It is technically true that "all dogs shed ... all dogs have dander", but some breeds don't produce enough of either to trigger reactions in most people with allergies. There's also the dander thing ... but some breeds don't seem to cause reactions even in the highly allergic. Sis's co-worker has an asthmatic kid ... triggered by allergies ... but their two Bichons cause no problems at all. Good thing, 'cause the kid's a real dog lover. Parents originally thought she couldn't have one, until their allergist suggested a Bichon.

"Non-shedder" is not technically correct ... just easier than "very-low-shedder-but-not-to-the-point-that-anyone-notices". :D
"Minimal" or "low-shedder" is more accurate ... but many times applied (by some) to breeds that do have noticeable shedding ... just less than say, a GSD or Rough Collie. One thing with non-shedders though ... keeping up with combing/brushing is an absolute must. They do shed a little bit, just don't deposit hair all over ... meaning the little bit they do shed stays on their body and can cause matts if you don't stay on top of their grooming.

That's Ollie in the bottom left of your sig, yes? Must be ... it says "Grammy and Ollie" :D

He definitely does not look like he has Poodle in him at all ... not in the coat (what can be seen), the face, eyes, nose ... nothing. Recall you said he was a rescue from Petfinder ...did they actually say he had Poodle in him?
