Those of us who have vets do docking or dew claws have to go there. I prefer that done by day 3 if possible. This last litter I worked with WhelpWise, and under their direction I was able to administer oxytocin so we were sure she was all cleaned out. I did not have to take her in, but the puppies went in on day 2 for docking and rear dew claw removal.
When I take new born puppies to the vet, they go in a covered basket which is carried directly to an exam room through a rear entrance. If my bitch needs exam and treatment, she does not come into the building, it is done in my van.
I bleach my hands and shoe bottoms before I get back into my vehicle as I am leaving. Clothing is stripped immediately upon returning home and washed.
Keeping a temp chart post partum is great advice. I take temp am and pm for 10 days post whelping.
