Finally! Constructive advice.

Mom and pups are gorgeous. Good luck cleaning up after that hoard when they are mobile! LOL!
Keep us updated!

Yes, it is about time some advice was given instead of the completely useless and silly bashing that has been going on. Frankly I am getting sick of it.
To those of you that were all up in arms about where or what that bitch was whelping on, have any of you had a whelping bitch insist on NOT whelping in that nice little area that we made up for them?????

OMG, I had a bitch whelp on my sofa once, yep I was there, yep I was attending to the pups and yep I made sure my sofa didn't get ruined. But when she started to whelp, she wanted NO part of the whelping box. Which was set up in a quiet room away from the hub of the house. Oh yeah, and yes she was use to the whelping box before hand.

Oh surprise, surprise, after she whelped, she was very content to be in that whelping box with her pups...........go figure.

I'll give you another shocker!!!!!!!!! I know a very successful breeder with awesome dogs, and they allow their bitches to whelp in a closet!!!!!!!!!! with very little human interference.

AND who in their right mind takes a bitch and her pups to the VETS a few days after whelping unless its an emergancy?!!!!!!!!!
Easy, count the placenta's and if that fails because it can be very hard to do sometimes............take the bitches temp every day for a week, if she starts to spike a temp, call the Vet. Oh yeah and watch for a discharge.

To the OP, GOOD LUCK with the pups and momma.

Those of us who have vets do docking or dew claws have to go there. I prefer that done by day 3 if possible. This last litter I worked with WhelpWise, and under their direction I was able to administer oxytocin so we were sure she was all cleaned out. I did not have to take her in, but the puppies went in on day 2 for docking and rear dew claw removal.

When I take new born puppies to the vet, they go in a covered basket which is carried directly to an exam room through a rear entrance. If my bitch needs exam and treatment, she does not come into the building, it is done in my van.

I bleach my hands and shoe bottoms before I get back into my vehicle as I am leaving. Clothing is stripped immediately upon returning home and washed.

Keeping a temp chart post partum is great advice. I take temp am and pm for 10 days post whelping.

:)

I have a docking breed as well, that is the exception as you know. I am talking about running the momma and pups into the Vets as it had been *advised* in this thread with no apparent reason.

I just want more pictures and news on naming. I hope all the little guys make it! My parents used to have a pair of registered Chow Chows who had about three litters and they only took the bitch to the vet if they had a problem that couldn't be advised through over the phone. (The bitch's first litter had a breach pup and the vet told them how to turn the pup around over the phone. I'm glad they had a good vet and I'm glad my mom was in nursing school!)

BIG DOGS, you will need to make arrangements for a different set up soon. 11 puppies will take up lots of room by the time they double in size at about 7 to 10 days. The crate will get too small very fast, and the danger of having the bitch crush or suffocate a puppy in there is high.

If you can find a kiddie/wading pool, this can work just fine with most bitches. I have friends who use these for whelping their dogs and it works for them.

If not, you will have to devise some other secure area where the bitch can come and go and the puppies will stay inside.

AMEN my rescue boxer (she found a home) whelped here just before Xmas. 11 puppies . Pit mixes mind you. By week three....the whelping box just wasn't enough...but we made due...by week 6...well...we tarped the WHOLE ROOM and papered it and they had full run, it is nuts with that many.

I have to admit, i do dews and tails myself (banding) so these puppies and my own won't go to the vet unless there is DIRE need, or until eight weeks for their go home
visit.

I agree with Dizzy. Its funny cause I knew there would be some kind of nit picking and bashing before I even clicked on this thread. Its a given. lol.

Good luck with the pups! Pics are always a plus, of course. :)

Just want to re-iterate that a good-sized playpen will be REQUIRED in the next few weeks, with that size of litter! Trust me, they are relatively cheap and easy to set up, you may have to clear a big spot in a main room for awhile, but it will be worth it to raise the pups active, healthy and with plenty of room for themselves and mom.

Remember what I mentioned in the other thread about newspaper and carpet. Paper-training them as early as possiblt is a very good idea, and will help your sanity very much in cleaning after eleven puppies.

For eleven puppies, I'd try to set up a 3 foot x 10-12 foot playpen in a main area of the home (kitchen, living area, something like that) so they get lots of interaction with humans and the other dogs early on. An even larger playpen would probably be ideal, I'm sure others who have actually dealt with large-sized litters can help you out with this. This is just all info based on what I've heard here on Chaz from breeders I respect (Red, DSA, etc) and from Finnegan's own breeder.

Best of luck, and please work hard for these pups!

Dogs have been giving birth since the beginning of time....Good lord - it may not be how YOU would do it, but at least she is warm and safe and fed.

Dogs give birth in ditches and do ok... and in barns, and sheds, and fields... I doubt being on the sofa is really going to do much damage.

And I'd say it's a **** sight better than being in a shelter kennel.

She could have a state of the art birthing room set up, 6 nurses on stand by and a fully trained canine midwife and people would still find fault - I am CERTAIN of that
.

There is only too much dog-related PC crap that this world can take.

Women give birth to humans in worse conditions than that.

We may not all agree with Bigdogs philosophies or attitudes, and I am by no means sticking up for her, because she is more than capable, and I am SURE there'll be things we disagree on wholeheartedly, but crikey.

Yes, we are all concerned for the puppies welfare, I love ANY dogs and want them to be safe.......

But good lord.....

Yes, it is about time some advice was given instead of the completely useless and silly bashing that has been going on. Frankly I am getting sick of it.
:hail: I have not liked how any of this has been handled honestly, and you two have said what I was too chicken to say!

They're so adorable! I'd love to see more pictures of them as they grow up.

And Dizzy, I totally agree with you. You said everything that I wanted to say. I'm so sick and tired of seeing this judgemental crap.

Awww! Too cute!

I often wonder how the bitches in the townships around here cope. Apparently very well because there are always plenty of dogs around.

It's always easy to get rid of 'pit bull' puppies and 'pit bull mix' puppies. It's never easy to "get rid" of them properly to the proper homes.

All I know is I pray for the best in this situation. Putting these dogs into the hands of the ignorant/uneducated, stupid, foolish, irresponsible, etc. (I could go on) is only going to feed the flame of BSL.

You need to do some serious questioning when talking to people who are interested in these dogs. You need to be able to say "NO" when the situation is not the best fit for the dog. And in fact, you need to be able to keep & raise these puppies themselves if the proper homes are not found right away or found at all.

Maybe I'm considered one of the "rude" ones, but considering I spend most of my nights writing letters to city councilmen and state reps & senators all across the country in an effort to combat BSL and also that I travel to attend meetings to prevent BSL from being enacted makes me want to scream when I see situations such as this one.

And maybe I'm heartless, but I would've done a spay/abort and most probably would euthanize the litter still. I see enough "pit bulls" out in the world that are owned by idiots or sitting in shelters or ending up on my table for euthanasia any way.

Being a caring and responsible pet owner doesn't always mean allowing a dog to have a litter of puppies and then placing Foofy, Fiffy, and Cutsie Wootise in just any random strangers hands.

We had white, brown spots on head non pittie pups and it took months to find proper homes.

Just giving dogs away with a free sign and doing real rescue is a whole different thing.

Please get the pups fixed before adopting them out. It makes them more adoptable in the future(more likely to stay alive in a kill shelter),not less.

I've already screened out 1 person, and accepted another one. So one pup is already reserved for a good friend.

Perhaps I should start soliciting donations from chazboard for this. I'm sure you will be willing to donate a few $$ to help cover the approximate cost of $700 to $850 for speutering 10 puppies?
