LOL, yes it can get messy, but she is keeping everything very clean. I suppose my favorite blanket will have some odd green stains that will never wash out, but it's a green blanket, anyway.

I thought she was done at seven pups, but she was just resting. We're up to eleven pups now.
Be patient for the pics, I have slow dialup connection and it takes for frigging ever to upload anything.
mom and puppy # 1

I am completely and utterly speechless and baffled at you, BigDogs. . . . . .

Poor dog. Look at that one pup sliding down into the couch?

Yes, dogs have been giving birth unassisted since the dawn of time, but they weren't using squishy and "hungry" couch cushions that are almost certain to result in the death of at least one pup in order to do so. Many pups die anyway in the best of circumstances, so why not attempt to stack the odds in their favor?

:(

I'm glad the mom seems to be doign ok for having 11 pups. Make sure to get her checked out in the next 24 hours to make sure the placentas and all have been expelled so she doesn't end up with pyo or sepsis.

maybe throw the blanket on the floor, put the male dog away and try to encourage momma to hang out on the floor with her babies. its def safer than the sofa

baby gates would also do wonderfully for a makeshift whelping box

actually, puppy # 1 was born on the other sofa, not the loveseat. Babygirl then decided that the smaller couch was a better place, and so I moved the pup there with her. Nobody fell through the cracks.

Mama and puppies are going into another room.
No favorite pups, they're all special.

Please don't go out without leaving someone to attend to the puppies. :( They are your responsibility and this is a vulnerable, critical period in their lives!

But that is only because its not such a far stretched idea. From what she has posted, I just can't believe anyone would give her a pregnant dog.
I seem to remember that BigDogs said she got this dog from a kill shelter. Most of those around here only have three requirements of adopters: be 18 or older, sign the form stating that you will obey the law that pertains to the care of pets, and pay the adoption fee. Then you can walk out the door with any dog/cat/other of your choosing, no further questions asked. They don't like to ask questions, because its one less animal they have to kill later.

I hope Mom and pups do well and I hope the pups grow up healthy.

I'd love to keep hearing updates and seeing the pictures as they grow.

I agree with the advice to talk her blanket and put her in an area on the floor so that the puppers don't fall between the cracks of the couch or roll off.

I'm anxious to hear after the Vet has checked all of them as well.

At my kill shelters, they don't adopt out anything that isn't altered..and a pregnant dog obviously isn't altered ;). I think most shelters wouldn't. So unless she is lying about getting a dog from a kill shelter, I don't see how any shelter would just hand over some random pregnant dog to anyone. (because most of the puppies would end up back there someday.).

They are very cute, I'm glad they seem to be doing okay. I didn't even think of the pups falling in the cracks until it was mentioned. I was more worried they'd roll off of the couh and hit the floor :(

Take care.

Actually, there are quite a lot of shelters which adopt unaltered dogs. They often give a discount on altering later or ask for proof of altering within a certain amount of time, but not all even do that.

Same here, they will adopt dogs like puppies that are too young to get altered and you have to return to get them fix for free.

Did you not read they are NOT still on the couch but going in another room? LOL Thanks for saying pretty much what I was going to say, Dizzy. Hopefully they'll all do well and find good homes eventually.

At least mommy has company, lots of food, a warm, dry place to raise the pups and someone to care for her.

Thanks for the pictures, BD :D

And unaltered animal and a Pregnant animal are two totally different things in my opinion... adopting out an unaltered animal and having someone sign a contract that they will alter the dog is one thing... allowing an inexperienced person to take home a pregnant dog is irresponsible... and then that person gets to sell the pups and profit from it?!

A lot of high intake kill shelters don't have the funds or the time to care about who's adopting the animals. They just want them out!

The Fauquier SPCA, which is a kill shelter about 15 minutes from my house, actually has a real application to fill out. But its still not hard to lie on one of those.

Hope they all thrive :)

Mom does look quite Labbie, but in that profile shot you can see the APBT in her. They should be extremely friendly and playful little monsters with that kind of genetic background!
