Poor dog. I wouldnt report or acuse until I knew for sure what happened. As everyone has said I would look for a blood trail and not let Mocha out of my sight. If my neighbor acused me or someone in my house wrongfully about something like this I would be POed. If I was reported for doing something like that I would be way past POed.
I hope Mocha heals swiftly.

something really bad must have happen at the neighbor's house, because my dogs have never barked at the neighbor before, but now they did. Not even when they see them, but just looking toward their house and bark their hearts out.

I just don't have the proofs.

Mocha was wet? So Mocha probably went to the neighbors yard and got sprayed by the hose and when he ran away maybe he damaged his nails? It's sad your dog is hurt but I can't see anyone catching Mocha and purposely clipping nails so they bleed. Even a sicko would most likely do other things to the dog before capturing it and clipping its nails.

Yep - pretty much. To think the neighbor caught the dog and clipped its nails short enough to bleed is ludicrous in my opinion.

I read so much on here from people that you need to strictly control your dog's environment. Putting your dog into a situation where it can wander off and hurt itself or be hurt by others is an issue the owner needs to deal with.

I hope the little pooch is OK!!! But reporting the neighbors without ANY proof for something that was most likely an accident is a very unwise plan of action.

It does seem a very bizzare thing - for your neigbour who was watering her garden to have gotten hold of your dog and cut a nail or two on each paw too far down... is it feasible? would your dog have let her, and what would your neigbour have used to do this?

Anyone trying that on either of my two - restraining them then using some tool to cause them pain - would have got a face full of scrabbling dog and probably bitten too.

It does seem very weird - I agree with what Dan said - surely a sick "dog hater" objecting to an intruding dog would just shout, kick the dog or something less elaborate - it sounds very strange.

Hope your dog recovers quickly, though.

Maybe he got his paws stuck in a rat trap or something? I do agree that doing that would probably not be the first thing someone would do.

Mocha came running from my neighbor's house covering in blood, and soaked in water! He was strembling and scared to death. I immediately took him to the emergency clinic. The vet told me that someone has cut very deep into the quick of his FIVE toenails, one/two in each paw!!!!!
I agree with some people that it's unclear what could have happened. If you've never had trouble with these neighbors before, try going over to their house and asking if you can look around, and 'see what Mocha could have ripped his toenails on' and see how your neighbors react. Maybe there is something that caused the injuries naturally. My dog ripped her dewclaw half off just by snagging it on the carpet, and she bled a lot.

You could try asking the vet his/her opinion if the nails could have gotten that way via an accident, or if they had to have been clipped deliberately. I'd think that a tear would look different from the results of nail clippers.

Those people would be seriously hurting if they ever touched one of my dogs. They would need to see how it feels to have their blood all over!

Maybe Mocha hurt himself while at the neighbour''s house and the neighbour seeing blood tried to run the hose on his paws to clean the wounds since that is the first thing to do in some people''s minds and then once the bleeding stopped s/he was going to notify you BUT then Mocha paniced, s/he tried to restrain him, he paniced more causing him to get all wet and finally wriggled free and that;s why he is now barking at your neighbour. He was in pain and scared when s/he was restraining him.

You've gotten some very wise advice. There's not much you can do without making things worse at this point. It's hard, I know - I know who poisoned Buffy, but I have to wait and pretend that it was an accident and "play nice."

It does sound like there should be a different explanation than someone at your neighbor's house cutting Mocha's nails though . . . but weird that it is all four feet . . . And could Mocha have gotten wet like that from running through the wet grass?

It's probably best to concentrate on keeping Mocha's toes comfy and making sure your dogs are always either inside or under your watchful eye when they are outdoors.

How awful, I'm sorry to hear about Mocha! You could ask your neighbors if they saw anything. But I wouldn't go accusing without any evidence. I certainly hope that the nails were ripped somehow, because someone who would do that to a dog would be very sick indeed!

Thanks for all the advices. It helps to know that Mocha is loved and cared for by so many of you.

Yesterday he was in pain and worn out, so he slept for most of the day. This morning, he was his old goofy self again, so full of energy and ever-so loving & trusting. I'm so glad he seems to heal well.

I chose NOT to accuse the neighbor at this time because the lack of proofs and since we're new on this neighborhood, I do not want to cause any tension. I know the best thing would be to go there and search for blood trails or anything but this neighbor is not very friendly to start with. They're rarely seen, and despite living right next door to them for the last year, I still don't know their names and how many people are living there!! They probably won't let me in.

I took this as a pricey and valuable lession for me (the saddest thing is my poor little boy had to pay for it!!). My husband double fenced the side of the backyard that is adjacent to this neighbor, and Mocha is no longer allowed to run free in our backyard without our supervision.

PS: The vet told me that this was more likely a cut wound than an accident caused by Mocha. It was straight and looked the same on all nails. It was just way too sick and heart-wrenching for me to imagine what had happened. In a way, I think I'm way more traumatized about this than Mocha... I couldn't even bring myself to look over to the neighbor's house side right now, let alone talking to them. I'd either burst into tears and couldn't speak or start yelling uncontrollably..

Even with a cut type wound he still could have gotten them caught in something that sheared them off.

I'm glad he's feeling better today, and I'm glad you are taking precaution to prevent it from happening again!

Yep. Life goes on. The pooch had an unfortunate accident. I am glad the little guy is healing up and feeling better. It is not the end of the world. Too much drama is never a good thing. I think you have drastically overreacted and dreamed up this outlandish tale of abuse in your head.

Wow is all I can say to that.

Sounds like they can say the same thing about you. Be the bigger person and go introduce yourself.

Oh, give her a break. I've had nuts neighbors, haven't we all? She's a Chazzer, so we should give her and her suspicions the benefit of the doubt. She's decided not to call the police about the neighbors, it's not like she's running down the street being a nutcase. She's emotional and upset because her dog got hurt. I can relate to that.

Wow is all I can say to that.

There are times when, if you have nothing generous to say, it's decent to keep your thoughts to yourself.

We are good friends with all the other neighbors except this one (too bad they're right next door to us!!). My other neighbors seem to think that they might have something to do with it, too.

I know I'm emotional about all this, but I don't dream up the unthinkable (at least to me) - I'm just stating what has happened to Mocha, and what I've suspected caused it. The only thing I've done so far was to take Mocha to emergency so he could be treated immediately and then yesterday put up another layer fence.

I've tried to give the neighbor the benefit of the doubts, that's the only thing that kept me from reporting them.

How can all of you just assume that someone did something malicious to the dog? Any number of things could have happened. The idea of someone just clipping his nails too short to cut the tips off, is just asinine.

Just because someone's a Chazzer means what? They're the best person in the world? Not likely.

I can sympathize with the OP, I'm sorry your dog got hurt. Since no one knows what happened, NO ONE can say 'OMG those horrible people' either. :S
