The environmental lobby holds back progress more than anything else in the world, yet they call themselves "progressives". Funny, eh? I would say that 75% of their tactics are FEAR based and without substance, but the media cares little about fact.
How would solar energy be so much more expensive to harness? There is sun EVERYWHERE, versus the very small areas of constant wind speed needed to make a the wind turbines viable. The Flint Hills here in Kansas are one of a very small group of potential areas that have the necessary Class 5 winds needed. What the huge issue is with those is that, yes, they do pose a threat to birds, but what are the other side effects? How do the ground vibrations factor in for the underground wildlife? What sort of noise is produced? And for the last point, the Flint Hills is the last remaining natural prairie grass sanctuary left in the country and one of an incredibly tiny few in the world. A couple hundred years ago, the Flint Hills comprised only a tiny fraction of the natural grassses, now 98% of the country's native grasses reside in this relatively small area. There are wildlife populations that are both native to this area, who's numbers are starting shrink as is, and many of those animals are now found only in this area. The stark beauty of the Flint Hills is something that the people in and around the area treasure, and coming over a hill and seeing row upon row of manmade turbines just doesn't have the same breathtaking effect as coming over a hill and seeing the play of light, shadow and color between the Earth, the horizon and all the natural variances of the landscape.
