Just because I'm a glutton for punishment..

Iran apparently has the capacity to create nuclear things now. In response, President Bush has stated that "we do not want the Iranians to have a nuclear weapon, the capacity to make a nuclear weapon, or the knowledge as to how to make a nuclear weapon."

In your opinions, do you think we have the right to make that kind of a statement?

I understand the fear-backing to this, that Iran is not a friendly country to most of our major interests, both political and otherwise.

Well said Jess!!!!!!! Horray!!

After Iran, where next??? I find these Oil related wars so incredibly STUPID!!! There was no need to go into Iraq, there is no need to go into Iran!! Iran has rich oil deposits, Bush wants them so that you guys can still have your high performance cars, and still have the cheapest Petrol on the planet!

I love the French news as we get a truely objective view... We don't get fed the home grown propaganda that you guys get.

Don't you guys see that America is the biggest threat to all other countries... They have both the knowledge, the materials and the means to build and store millions of nuclear weapons!!! Is Bush just going to go around the world, make the rest of us defenseless and then take over the WHOLE lot???

I say to Bush, look closer to home! There is only enough Oil on the planet to last another 2 years at the rate we are going through it... so make changes to the system, not snatch and grab from other countries!!

Sorry this is one of those topics that riles me! lol! I'll go back to my usual happy go lucky style now!

How about the fact that the UN basically told Iran that they are not to enrich uranium? And the other day they come out celebrating the fact that they have enriched Uranium......wtf is that? That's the UN too...not the US. The whole war for oil claim is old and tired........and about the French news being "truly objective" and the US getting "fed home grown propaganda" PA-leease. I don't know why you would say that anyway....90% of the news media over here would agree with you.

"Don't you guys see that America is the biggest threat to all other countries... They have both the knowledge, the materials and the means to build and store millions of nuclear weapons!!! "

Yes you are right we have the smarts and the means....but we don't say we want to wipe countries of the face of the planet...And our governement is NOT a tyranical dictatorship....and honestly do you think the US would ever nuke a civilian city? No way...

"I say to Bush, look closer to home! There is only enough Oil on the planet to last another 2 years at the rate we are going through it... so make changes to the system.."

Wild unsubstantiated claim..... But I think it is funny how you say "at the rate that WE are going through it..." But fixing it is President Bushs problem? That's they way so many people are now a days....WTF??? Everyone wants the US to swoop in and solve all the problems while they are throwing rocks at us.....makes no sense to me....I will tell you one thing though.....THANK GOD THAT THE FRENCH ARN'T THE ONES DOING THE FIGHTING....YA'LL WOULD HAVE RAISED THE WHITE FLAG YEARS AGO! :D

"Is Bush just going to go around the world, make the rest of us defenseless and then take over the WHOLE lot???"

Come on......with all the billions of dollars that the USA pours into aid for other countries and our servicemen laying their lives on the line for complete strangers......how could you even say that...

Excuse me, but firstly I am not French, not that that has anything to do with anything, because I would be proud to be French if I so happened to be so. I think before slurring this very good nation you should either 1) visit it, or 2) It would possibly help if you had in fact EVER met anyone French. I don't know where this totally unfounded, and frankly rude attitude towards the French comes from!! Just because they had the sense to leave well alone!!!

Secondly I never said that you were governed by a "Tyranical dictatorship". It was merely a speculative comment, which you have blown out of all proportions!!

And actually I have been doing alot of research into the "Oil Crisis" I am going to be building my own home and have been looking into sustainable and environmentally sound heating and electrical options, all of the material I have read so far from many, many sources, has strongly suggested that Oil is running out, and as it takes millions of years to form, it is unlikely that we will get any more!!
When I said "at the rate We are going through it" I meant mankind in general!! Not the Americans specifically!! But you can read whatever you like into it.

And as to your servicemen laying down their lives, well I feel sorry for them and their families. There will be no resolve to the war in Iraq.

Oh and by the way, I do know what I am talking about here.. Having 2 family members working for the British Government helps.

Well this sorta made me giggle. In case it's been forgotten, the entire point of the atomic bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki (as stated by President Harry Truman who gave the order) was to inflict destruction and instill fear of further destruction that was sufficient to cause Japan to surrender. The targets were picked specifically for that purpose and the majority of casualties were civilian in order to achieve that end. (sound familiar? targeting civilians to effect leadership change?)

Here's an eyewitness account.

http://www.wtj.com/archives/hiroshima.htm

If I had any faith whatsoever in the current leadership of the USA, I would have no qualms about using the means necessary, up to and including invason of Iran, to stop their progress toward nuclear bomb capability. I do not, however, so until we have a "regime change" here at home, I will be opposed to the USA taking action.

I'd also like to see Israel forced to dismantle their nuclear program. Too many hot heads in that region for it to be safe for anyone to have this type of weaponry IMO

I have to be very careful with these sorts of threads so that I don't comprimise (sp) security... I think I know to much! lol!

Have been to Iran and Israel, and had a wonderful time in both countries, and found the people to be both reasonable and intelligent!

Well the above is why I don't post in threads like this.....Your location says France.....The French are historicaly known for their cut and run in the face of danger behavior....I don't have to visit France or meet a Frenchmen to know that. Besides "ya'll would have raised the white flag years ago" was posted in jest....note the :D after it....And how do you know that I have never met anyone French? Or been there?

Now....I didn't say that you that you said (god this is lame) we were governed by a tyranical dictatorship.....That is what Iran is governed by....that is why I feel we have the right to say what Zoom quoted...So you actually have blown that out of proportion...

Please quote your source that oil will be gone in two years and post a link please.

And when you say: "I say to Bush, look closer to home! There is only enough Oil on the planet to last another 2 years at the rate we are going through it... so make changes to the system, not snatch and grab from other countries!!"

How can you not read into that the way I did??

"Oh and by the way, I do know what I am talking about here.. Having 2 family members working for the British Government helps."

What does THAT have to do with anything?? I'll tell you.....NOTHING. I have family members in the US government....does that magicly make me the authority on this......no. But some how you think your family members do?

Sorry Gustav, I should have said too many hot head leaders in those countries. Bad MoM, to generalize like that.... especially given the history of my country when it comes to intemperence ;)

What is done is done...that has nothing to do with current events. It happened...it is tragic....water under the bridge. Let's look forward. :)

The French fought valiantly and for the most part without assistance in WW1. I'm a little tired of the right wing media myth of French cowardice being perpetuated. Yes, the Vichy government was a disgrace, but we should never forget the invaluable role the French played in the ultimate destruction of Nazi Germany. Especially as the people paid a very high price for resistance against the Nazi occupation.

Bully, the point is that we would and have done the "unthinkable."

The US hardly has a moral bullypulpit on the issue of "weapons of mass destruction."

I'll agree to disagree, there's just nothing that riles me quite like the persistant attitude towards the French! I admit I may have jumped on my band wagon there so I apologise. I assumed you had never been to France as there is a high % of Americans that have never even left the States. I should really take some of my own medicine in that area, one of my favourite sayings is "assumption is the mother of all **** up's" Lol!

I have many links regarding the Oil Crisis... How is your French??? lol!

Ok, hands up I could have phrased the "Snatch and Grab" comment better, I was a bit narked this morning, plus I am not the most eloquent of people, having Dyslexia doesn't help much either.

I never said I was an "Authority" It's just that I know more than your average Joe, and I wish I could impart all the information I know, but I can't. Lets just say that my family members aren't Janitors!!! :D

I agree with you there! :D My post wasn't an attack on you at all, sorry if it came across like that.....in some of these subjects people feel so strongly about their position it's hard to see the other side....I just love my country, I have faith that my leaders have the Worlds interests at heart and not just our own. Look at everything that the United States does for other countries.....There arn't many countries that do as much as we do for others. And I take it personal when it gets thrown back in our face. And I shouldn't....but hey I am only human!

Oh and BTW...I love the French....if it weren't for them what tasty morsals would I enjoy with my McDonalds Cheeseburger?? Canadian Fries? LOL :p :D

I agree it is hard to be objective when there is passion of any sort involved.

I couldn't disagree with you more....but only time will tell who is right on that one....

I think we have more of a moral stance on WMD than some...I mean...we don't gas our own population....

Gonna have to agree to disagree on this one.

No, we don't gas our own people, we just did radiation experiments on them (more modern times) or round them up and give them dieases or shoot them or allow them to starve (Native Americans)

And while we're fairly generous (although most European nations give a higher % than we to foriegn aid) our history in South and Central America isn't what one could call philanthropic either.

Oh well. BTW, I am not anti the USA. I am patriotic. I just happen to believe that our history is more than a little sordid and knowing the past is important to correcting our future course and making us better... making us what we're supposed to be!

I had a feeling that Europe was more generous, but I had no hard evidence so thought I'd better keep schtoom. ;)

On the higher %...you mean of their GNI right? Even still we tower above the rest in dollars to aid.....so what if it is a low % of our GNI...we still give MORE than anyone else.

And I am happy you clarified that you are not Anti USA...becasue you haven't said one thing positive about it in this thread....
