Agreed :)

Although I always find it funny to hear the differences in words and phrasing between not only the two countries but the individual states and provinces too.
Oh agreed! Just the underhanded comments near the beginning of the thread kinda had be going "...again?"

I used to call couches chesterfields all the time because my mom did. I call 'em couches now.

Another Canadian term - when you're on unemployment, you're on pogey, or "on the pogue". I think that's mostly a maritime phrase, but I love it. :p

Also: GO TEAM MARTIN on our Gold medal win in curling! He won the gold UNDEFEATED - 11 wins, 0 losses. That's astounding.

Here there are regional differences, though to my knowledge no one calls all pop coke. Though some people call all snowmobiles skiddoos (which is a brand name)
On that map, my county in Oklahoma says 'coke' but I know everyone there calls it pop as is confused by me call everything coke.

Here in New Jersey it took me a long time to get used to grammatical variations. I came from Iliinois, where we go "to the beach" or, in a stretch, maybe "down to the shore". Here in Jersey you go "down the shore". And in Iliinois you wait in line for something, here it is "on line" which I think is related to internet use, not waiting for your coffee or train.

And I love the British Queue because of its spelling. I do like words, and I don't know anything else that has the double "ue"

Also, what happens if you offer someone a coke and all you have is pepsi? Must lead to some confusion.

"Would you like a coke?"
"Sure"
"What kind?"
"Well, a Coke"
"We don't have coke, all our coke is Pepsi"

A friend of mine has this on her facebook..

Our father who art in Vancouver, hockey be thy name. Thy will be done, the gold will be won, on ice, as well as thy stands. Give us this day, Our hockey sticks, and forgive us our penalties as we forgive those who cross check against us. Lead us not into elimination, but deliver us to victory. In the name of the Canadi...an hockey team, "AMEN"!
I thought it was cute.

I think its funny that beating ones chest for their country is sometimes 'patriotic' and others is 'arrogance'. Further that it often matters which country is being touted. Just sayin... :)
Ya, that elicited an ever-so-slightly-rueful chuckle from me as well. :D

On the pop/coke/soda/'other" map .... ummm, whomever created that thang has way too much time on their hands. (Though I agree with Sparks ... what the heck is that "other"??)

But gotta say that I have never understood the mostly-Midwestern affectation to call it "pop", as to me that word is a euphemism for "Grandpa". Up here at Tahoe we just call soda "soda". :p

That happens all the time. :) They ask if pepsi is okay generally. Or usually people will list out the kinds of coke they have (like Dr Pepper, Sprite, Pepsi, etc). I'd say among most people about 90% time here coke = Dr Pepper.

Yesterday I was at a food place with a friend who isn't as up on the whole Texas thing and then he asked me what I wanted to drink. He said, "What are you getting to drink?" I said "coke." He looked at the fountain drinks and frowned. "They don't even have coke." I pointed to the Dr Pepper, lol.

It's soda or coke (I'm from Arizona originally). If you say you want a coke, most people ask "what kind" - generally I mean Coca Cola though, Pepsi's nasty. :D

Speaking of regional differences, I always guess Canada was very similar to the US. But my dummy cousin, who is from Tennessee (and a 5th cousin no less, thank God she's not closely related) asked me at our family reunion "So you're from Arizona, isn't it dangerous with the indians?" - **face palm**

Yep, so dangerous in AZ, ya know because the indians will still scalp you, just at the casino and not literally.

I've run into a few Midwesterners (mostly rural folk) who call it sodey-pop or just sodey... Guess that's one of the 'others'. :D
