Shoot, I didn't even think about Aidan! We always lose power in the summer.

I'm not expecting us to lose power for more than a day or two, tops, but still...how do I keep him warm?!?
If you can find hand pocket warmers. Activate and wrap them in towels or put to the side of this tank/setup.

Hand warmers, or if you have a friend with wood heat you can ask if you can keep him over at their place if it gets to be an extended power outage.

My old iguana weathered several week-long winter outages thanks to the wood stove. We kept the ambient heat in the upper seventies and a store of bricks on top of the stove that could go under some towels for him to "bask" on and digest his food.

Random, but keep in mind that your homeowners (and maybe renters not sure) insurance may pay for food lost when power goes out. I remember a friend getting reimbursed for lost food due to a power outage just a week or so ago and they didn't even require her to pay the deductible first.
Interesting. I'd be paranoid about the rate increases when it came time to renew if I had a nitpicky claim for a couple hundred worth of food, but if I'm claiming other stuff anyway I may add that on!

My aunt texted me freaking out that I'm not prepared. We haven't bought water, non perishables, etc. Are they really expecting this thing to be that bad? I'm up in NOVA and it looks like its mainly going to hit more south.

My opinion is ... Who CARES if this one is or isn't going to be so bad, you should always have an emergency preparedness kit.

I hate to be cliche but...
It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

If there is even the possibility that it could be bad then be prepared. If at the end of it all you have to say is you were prepared for nothing then I would say it was worth it.

According to the capital weather gang, yeah...it's going to be pretty bad.

Basically up to 8" of rain (aka flooding) and high speed winds (aka downed trees). They are expecting significant power outages. Living in a basement apartment, I'd be concerned about potential flooding...

We're going out tomorrow (I think) to grab some supplies. And eating up most of the non-perishables since I don't think we'll be hit until late Monday into early Tuesday.

Don't forget to fill up with gas for any vehicles. If the power is out the pumps won't work so if it is out for an extended period of time you are SOL if you are running on empty.

The flooding is a big concern and reason to stock up on water. Flooding can make tap water undrinkable (without boiling first) very quickly

I know where we are they expecting 6-10 inches of rain and winds up to 85mph. Not odds i want to play against

Also if you guys have empty water jugs (or any empty containers)... fill em up now with tap water so you can flush your toilets :p.

My sister and I made fun of my mom when she called us earlier this week all worried about NY getting hit. I left for work today with no thoughts towards the weather. By the time I got home my sister had already gone into full-blown survival mode. Her frantic flittering about got me slightly nervous. We have water and food. She filled tupperware containers with water to pack the freezers/fridge with ice. We're moving things out of the basement and garage incase of flooding (our basement floods quite easily).

I always keep the dogs' important papers and medications on hand, so that's already done. Their freezer is somewhat full, so I really hope we don't lose power long enough for the 100lbs or so of meat to spoil. I'll pick up a bag of dog food just in case.

Our power company called us telling everyone to have enough food/water for up to 7-10 days of outages. The insurance company wants everyone to have their policy number on hand and take an inventory of all valuables in the house. I don't think we'll go that far, but we've definitely taken more precautionary measures than we had in the past

Well... I guess we are going to try to get some supplies today. I haveeee to get laundry done first though since I have like no clean laundry right now. We don't have a washer or drier so have to go to the laundromat.

What all should I be getting? Obviously water. Flashlights, batteries, candles...

What are good options for food? We don't have a normal kitchen down in our basement apartment... Just a mini George forman grill and a mini fridge. Plus my husband has celiac disease which limits what kind of food we can buy. Ideas?

I have plenty of dog food and if the boys run out they can eat Cricket's food for a day or two if needed.

If this gets as bad as they say it is then this is going to suck. I have to work on Tuesday regardless of how bad it gets and my work is an hour away. In fact, if we lose power at work I may have to go up there earlier to take care of our boarding dogs to make sure they are ok.

Well, I hope you still find something. The stores were out of water and flashlights yesterday. But get some cans of fruit, beans and whatnot

I'm confused about the computer models though. If you look on CNN tracker, there's still a possibility that it's going to go East... if you look on weather.com, all the models go West. I guess we'll know tomorrow morning...

I found out last year that my bathtub slowly leaks. So much for that.

I really doubt we'll lose water though... well... I really hope not. But it's a big city and stuff.

Remember if you are buying canned food to have a way to open it. (That's not electrical.) I heard good foods are peanut butter, trail mix, and beef jerky.

Stay safe everyone. I hope it's not as bad as its supposed to be.

Food Ideas: Sandwiches (pb&j, cold cuts should last a day or so), food stuffs that can be cooked on the grill or in a pot (on the grill). Non-perishables (crackers, canned food, etc.)
