Yeah, that's one thing about my breed. They can handle the cold in small doses, but then they must come inside and warm up. Its kind of fun to watch 3 Pit Bulls playing in their different coats, though. LOL I have a feeling Terra will have outgrown hers by next winter, so I'm going to campaign for pink camo or something silly next time.

Thats about my standard. I can handle the 3 mile walks, or the brushing, not both, and I like the walking better. I want something that wont mat or get too much stuff entangled. The poodle wouldn't be that bad, as long as a clipper was available. Breeds that need near daily brushing would be matted so fast with me... nor am I of the temperament to clean out "poopy butt".

I this climate an undercoat is important, for the active breeds at least since its rather cold and wet all winter, but even if they're not brushed out, the worst that happens is hair all over (for the most part).
I think it's a common misconception with some longhaired breeds that they need a lot of grooming.

If you go about picking the right type of longhaired coat, grooming is about as easy as it gets.

Everyone always asks me how much I groom my dogs and they always seem shocked when I tell them. I don't groom very often at all.

Now, before anyone asks, shelties are not the easiest to groom breed, but really... they're not very hard to groom either. Well... if you can mind the shedding. (Which is about on par with my old GSD and my lab- the hair is just longer)

Just a note.

The long haired whippets don't have an undercoat. They are single coated just like short haired whippets. But they are great in the cold! I like hairy JRTs for that reason. Kaiden loves the cold. -20C and he is still happy to be outside. (thats -4F) The whippets were surprisingly winter hardy and played out in the snow and cold without issue.

And they don't need much grooming and as there is no undercoat the shedding is minimal!

I will not own any small dogs (under 35 pounds we'll say). I will probably not own a golden retriever or Labrador retriever unless he's a mix that does not resemble them a lot because although I know it's weird, I don't like how judged they are...positively judged! I don't want someone loving my dog because of his breed, I want them to love him because of him individually and because of how he is trained. I know when I was walking Ginger (golden) everyone oooed and awwed at her and wanted to pet her and I remember walking Max and people walking to avoid us and no one ever wanted to touch him because he was a big black dog. It just does not seem fair and because of that I have grown to not really like those breeds everyone seems to love, I shouldn't say I don't like them I just would not want to own them. I will not own a sighthound (although greyhounds have grown on me) or the more independent breeds like Shar-Peis. That said I ADORE the look of Shar-Pei mixes (not pures though) and if I could find another mix that acted like Max I would get him. I will not own a Husky, I don't know why I just don't think I will, they don't suit me. Actually there are a lot of dogs I won't own, mainly because I know what I do want to own. I won't put anything totally out of the realm of possibilities except small breeds, I can't really explain it they just can't grow on me.

( I just don't like the way they look, to be honest. )

Hmm...I'm really up for any other breed, I guess. :)

- Husky, GSD, Shelties, etc. Anything with a thick or double coat. (WAY too much hair).

- Neo, Korean, French, etc. Mastiffs, Saints, etc. (TOO much drool, and knowing how invasive the surgery to cut salivary glands is, I wouldn't put a dog through it).

- English Bulldogs. (Just don't like 'em).

- Any toy breed (Too yappy and fragile, and too much aggressive "little big dog" syndrome). Smallest dog I would ever get is a Bull Terrier.

- Labs and Goldens (Too common, and though they're proven great dogs, they're just not really my taste).

Generally, anything tall, athletic, sleek-coated, agile, trainable, and full of energy, is my cup of tea. Weims (obviously), Dobes, Vizslas, German Shorthaired Pointers, APBTs, AmStaffs, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Thai Ridgebacks, etc.

My only exception (due to the fact that it DOESN'T have a short, sleek coat) is a Poodle. I like Standard Poodles. Hafta be black though.

Just doing my toy dog owner duty and pointing out that that's all training that you mentioned. Toy dogs are trainable and can be trained not to yap or be aggressive.

Amen. I am not a huge fan of little dogs but my Miley is so awesome. Everyone, regardless of their taste in dogs, falls hard for this little lady.

Probably not any dog that couldn't be off leash - Beagles, Hounds, Pit Bulls, those type breeds.

Little dogs don't really apeal to me, but maybe one day I'd own a small-er dog.

For now, I'll stick with my Herding and Working group :)
