But(always a but...right?) I could probably never own a Chi
I think it's funny how many people would never own a Chi..... I said that a few years ago, too, after meeting my grandmother's chi. I also said that to my friend three times before deciding to adopt the chi she was fostering. Best decision I ever made.

There are a LOT of breeds I say I'd never own, but, if I saw one with a great personality in a shelter (like my chi), I'm sure I'd take him home anyway!

If the dog was in need, I wouldn't say no, but there is a list of breeds I wouldn't actively seek out.
At the very top of the list is the Bichon Frise. No offense meant to those who own them but I personally think they are the ugliest of all breeds. I really don't like their personalities either.
Next is any and all retrievers, especially labs. I don't like most breeds that are ready to love any old person, plus I HATE how popular they have become.
It isn't practical for me to own a high maintenance dog since I'm so lazy with grooming but I really like the temperament and looks of Standard Poodles, Bouviers, and Old English Sheepdogs, so at least for now I wouldn't look for one.

Those big rare guardian breeds. They are too much for me.

Though really, now that I say it I might end up with one.:D The last breed I wanted was a Chow and I end up with a Mix! Really, I love all breeds and never really had bad experiences with a certain breed, and if I do, I just say it is the owner or its breeding. That is usually always it. Oh, Zoom send all the Labs to me if you get anymore!

I can name the breeds I will own in the future quite easily though.;)

WHy no terriers but would take a manchester? :yikes: they can be as bad as JRTs for terrierness. I know a JRT breeder turned manchester breeder. She liked it cause they were so similar... just with less edge.

That's a good point about giant breeds. I love danes and newfs, but I wonder what I'd do if they were hurt and I needed to move them? I guess I'd call for help from a neighbor if my husband wasn't here, but I never thought of that?
That whole "mother's adrenaline" thing kicks in. You'd be suprised at your strength in a urgent situation.

I was alone when my 195 pound male dane went down (about a quarter mile from the house out in the woods). I probably weighed in at a whopping 105 pounds back then. I called for help on the phone, and in the meantime, got creative. I ran back to the house (in record time), grabbed a comforter and managed to roll him onto it. Then I pulled him on the comforter the whole way back to the house where help was waiting, though at that point I could've moved a house by myself if I had to. Sadly, he was already deceased and nothing could be done for him.

I've also physically lifted one of my female danes...she was probably about 130 pounds and was trying to tangle with a water mocassin. She wouldn't retreat, so I ran over and "scooped her up" the best I could.

This all probably explains why I have reoccurant back problems these days. :p Thankfully now I have a 6'4, 250 pound fiance who can do all my heavy lifting for me should the need ever arise again.
