I would never get a chihuahua, pomeranian, or shih tzu, they just don't appeal to me at all. I probably wouldn't get a dog from a breed known for strong dog-aggressive instincts.

There are very few "non large" dogs I'd consider, as large, huggable dogs are my favorites. :) Although I'd consider a beagle! ;)

A plush dog! :lol-sign: I like a little life in my dog and a lot of dog in my life, so I must say that I prefer the Mastiffs as I've had them around for a long time, but I would not turn any needy dog away. Each of them has their own unique character.

The breeds I would say wouldn't quite "fit" into our household:

Border Collies-waaaay to much energy/work level needed, I've heard my Dobe should be pretty energetic, but at 5 months he's just as content to sit on my feet all day and be petted :)

Beagles-my sister in laws Beagle used to follow me out in the fields when I was riding, and I could scream till I was blue in the face to have him "come" and he just kept his nose down and kept going....irritating to me!

St. Bernards-we have one now that drools up a storm. I knew what I was getting into too; had one when I lived at home....but I swear she didn't drool as much!

Cocker Spaniels-I'm sure it's not breed specific but e v e r y one I have met "piddled" on the floor when excited (submissive urination I know) you can pretty much guarantee when you go to my sil's house, Princess is going to meet you at the door, wiggling her tail and piddling at the same time.

At one time I would have said the "little yappy dogs" but I have started to grow fond of the cute little Pomeranians, Chi's, etc.

Smallest dog I'd ever want is a Cardigan. I mean I could list the dogs I wouldn't ever want to own, but it would probably offend people haha. it would be easier to just list the dogs I'd like to own I think x]

Pit Bulls
Rottweilers
Bull Mastiffs
Dogos
Filas

Basically, I would not own any type of bull/guardian/lifestock guardian breed, ever.

Dachshunds
Poodles (of any variety)
Chihuahuas
Yorkies
....basically none of the small "foo-foo" dogs :D Just not my cup of tea whatsoever.

The ONLY Labrador Retriever I would ever own would have to be a field lab from working and titled parents. None of those oversized slobbering mutt things please.

No Golden Retrievers (have yet to see one that can do any hunting/field work....but that's my experience with them)

There are some breeds such as Border Collies that I admire but that I firmly believe should be left to those who not just love the breed in it's entirety, but actually encourage the dog to use it's God-given herding ability.

After being a vet tech, I've got a much longer list of breeds I personally wouldn't own, but those mentioned are ones I would truly have to turn down no matter how dire the situation.

A lot of them do it, especially if they're Not from the best of breeders. But not all of them! ;)
Actually, I think more doxies that I've met do it more than cockers I've met. JME

No pekes for me :p

Any breed with overly long or curly hair, which need poopy butt intervention or ear hair plucking. Any dog under 30 pounds. Breeds with long, droopy ears or eyelids.

I like "natural" breeds. I don't kid myself that the APBT is completely natural, because obviously their short hair would never cut it. But no breed that is really far removed from the general canine type.

Dachshunds are foo foo dogs? lol. I have had them my entire life, and they are big dogs in short long bodies!! They have big dog barks, they like getting dirty and hunting, and digging, and swimming..I think they are very masculine small dogs! :) (I have just never heard anyone call them foofoo dogs before)

Well no labs or goldens for me (unless they were field..and even then not likely) no poodles, love their temperament, but too much grooming for me. Nothing that drools or has droopy eyes. (droopy eyed dogs make MY eyes water lol) Or lots of hair.

Zoom, this is an old thread! :D

Okay... for me... no dog aggressive breeds. Nothing that requires professional grooming or lots of clipping. I generally don't sit too well with terriers... an exception is a good JRT like my uncles- I love that dog.

No toy dogs for me.... except for papillons- they don't count. :D (Talk about a BIG personality and a very capable dog in a small package...)

No giants (Except leonbergers!) and NO drooling!

also not a fan of a smush nosed dog...

I will probably only ever own 'higher energy' breeds... I like to do things with my dogs and I like dogs that like to do things. Most dogs I am drawn to are herding breeds. I love their intensity and their devotion... they're a special group of dogs. I tend to like medium sized, medium to long hair, long muzzled and pricked eared or semi pricked eared, fairly natural athletic build...

No, I'm not picky.

And they aint scared of any ol' Pit Bulls or nuthin' else! :lol-sign: Doxies are one of those breeds that it seems like have a fetish for flinging themselves bravely in front of oncoming big dogs. Have you noticed that, or is it just me?

Baha, I've definitely noticed that! My friend's grandma (who's also my neighbor) has a Doxie named Jellybean, who is just a riot and a half. She's feisty, energetic, affectionate, playful, doesn't give a second thought to any physical activity, and has thrown herself in front of and tried to initiate play with my rotties at the time. Doxies are still hounds, and though a lot of the show breeding practices have made them overexaggerated proportionally, not all of them are aware they're that short. :p Small, yes, but most Doxies I've met are not "foo-foo," but rather intelligent, active dogs. However, they're not the breed for me, either.

LOL. No, they aren't hence why I listed them separately. ;)

They are extremely popular where I live and I've dealt with them a lot as a vet tech/client relationship. Based on that, I do not want one.

And from the friends I know who own them, I do not want one.

I have no issue at hand with the breed itself. I just personally don't like them. Sorry. :)

Poodles, Yorkies, Bichons, and any "designer" dog. I want something low maintenance next, BUT I'd take another Tibby if I could find one (They're NOT low mait.)

Any dogs that has been bred to be undersizes or oversize that doesn't fit the actual standard. No teacup sizes I think it's beyond ridiculous & the design breeds

NO POODLES either!

Thats about my standard. I can handle the 3 mile walks, or the brushing, not both, and I like the walking better. I want something that wont mat or get too much stuff entangled. The poodle wouldn't be that bad, as long as a clipper was available. Breeds that need near daily brushing would be matted so fast with me... nor am I of the temperament to clean out "poopy butt".

I this climate an undercoat is important, for the active breeds at least since its rather cold and wet all winter, but even if they're not brushed out, the worst that happens is hair all over (for the most part).
