I think it's wonderful that my province passed an anti dock/anti crop law. The breeders protested and it's going to make it hard for them to show in the States...but, oh well...it's just a beauty contest :D There is nothing nicer than a Rottie with a full tail. Dobe breeders are going to have to get away from the grey hound look and start breeding dogs that suit their new look...perhaps bring Rottie back into the breeding.

Sure. This is something the government needs to control, right? People better get used to the idea of NO DOGS, because with the attitude like that one above, it will come about most likely in your lifetimes.

If the ARs are not stopped, pure bred dogs will be gone within 20 years, MAYBE LESS. Maybe your province needs to go ahead and pass a mandatory spay.neuter law for all dogs over 4 months of age too.

Then let's see how long your province enjoys the companionship of dogs. Or how fast the purchase price of ANY dog sky rockets when only a very few who are able to afford the high licencing fees and permits required for intact dogs.

Because that comes right after the docking and cropping gets outlawed.

Thankfully nothing like this in our area has been proposed--hopefully this does not end up passing.

Truthfully, I doubt I would crop or dock any dog I own but I'll not tell others what they should do with their animals--not a road I want to go down.

This bill did not...repeat....did not pass

Just to reiterate what Red said earlier, this bill DID NOT PASS NOR HAS IT MOVED OUT OF COMMITTEE!!!
The article published in The Dog Press is FALSE as it pertains to the passing of the ANTI-docking bill in NY State.

Many of us have written letters to the editor of The Dog Press asking for an immediate retraction but as of this date, one has not appeared.

Erroneous reporting of this nature has caused immense confusion in an already confusing and HECTIC legislative year. We have ENOUGH going on right now without spreading ourselves even thinner to deal with clearing up false reports.

The NY legislative session is (THANKFULLY!) almost over....the anti-docking bill has no companion bill in the senate and it is VERY unlikely that this bill will do anything other than sit where it is and has been for months.

What you all CAN DO to help in the fight against the ARs (animal radicals, was animal "rightists"), is to JOIN your STATE's PET-LAW email list!!!! Every state has VERY dedicated hard-working animal owners/breeders that NEED YOU!!!

To Sign up for YOUR state list, please visit:
Pet-Law: Defending the Freedom to Own Pets and click on state lists at the top (I think!)

If you choose to sit back and do nothing, then don't whine when YOUR rights get taken from you.

Let's all join together and send these animal radicals packin' back to the rock they slithered out from!!

Also, this bill has not passed. It is still in the NYS Assembly Committee on Agriculture. There also is no Senate equivalent.

There are four weeks left to the 2009 regular session, so it looks like this bill is unlikely to pass.

Yea, that was me who said it. :)

How obvious it is that you have no experience with dog shows, Dobermans, OR Rottweilers.

Dobermans are NOT supposed to look like Rottweilers. That's why they're Dobermans. They are not supposed to look like greyhounds... and they don't. The are, however, supposed to have nice tuckups and deep chests for the same reason why sighthounds have deep chests - more lung capacity.

The bill has no chance of passing, but it does bring out the crazies on both sides.

Some crazies it brings out are the Peta folks.

Others are (sorry) right here on this forum. Those who say that a docking bill would eliminate dogs as pets are just nuts. Docking has been illegal in the UK and most of Europe for years, and dogs, dog shows, and breeders do just fine. Please explain that for me.

You do a disservice to your cause when the ONLY argument you have against docking is the "Slippery slope".... that is, if we allow one thing to happen then inevitably another really insane thing will happen. The world does not work that way, sorry. Most folks are in the reasonable middle and legislators are sure not going to take your dog away. Heck, they cannot even pass reasonable anti-puppy mill laws in most states.

Slippery Slope is a disingenuous argument because it can be used against ANYTHING (like, "If we do not allow banning private citizens from owning nuclear weapons then inevitably we will be barred from owning pocket knives.).

I would much rather see a rational discussion of the pros/cons of docking, including its direct effects on breeders, than this kind of nonsense.

Might not be a bad idea for New York residents to make some noise to their representatives and let 'em know that you ARE paying attention -- to this and a great many other things . . .

Make 'em think twice before they vote. On anything.

WEll i must be nuts then. I see cropping and docking as nothing more then trying to change things to please us in a way we shouldn't. IF all we saw were natural ears and natural tails then the other would seem strange. I wish they would ban it here but they won't.

Actually I do have experience with dog shows. The difference is I was able to see dogs shows for what they are and I'm not kennel blind. :) You are aware that Rottie's were used to create the Dobe...natural breeds are few and far between. Most purebred dogs are inbred mixed breeds that are genetically isolated from the rest and called purebreds :). Oh yes, and it's just like a dog show person to be condescending towards others.

As far as docking and cropping they are considered cosmetic surgery only. There really is no "need" to have these procedures done as cosmetic practice only. As for docking this is amputating the tail of a dog which in fact is removing an important body part used for balance, maneuvering, and communication. Ear cropping or partial ear amputation and removing important acupuncture points.

I wouldn't compare docking and cropping to altering pets.

I don't know if it affects anyone else like it does me, but when i see cropped ears i literally feel a little sick to my stomach. I see it as a mutilation. Spaying and neutering are not a choice for more suffering will be the result and bringing down the overpopulation is a have to thing. To change a dog's appearance for the pure reason of creating a pleasing look is totally different. Not doing it would not result in more suffering. You cannot compare the two.

Yes, of course - but other breeds were used too - the german pinscher (which was probably the most predominant breed used), the manchester terrier, the greyhound, among others - and that was around 100 years ago.

Today, Dobermans are far removed from their smallish pool of Rottweiler ancestors. Different coat, different build, different size, different temperament... other than the fact that they both are working dogs with rust markings and come from Germany, they're nothing
alike. And it's just plain dumb to try to make Dobermans "better' by breeding in another equally unhealthy breed.

I'm not sure who you're calling kennel blind. I'm not a breeder, but I am a fancier and have owned wonderful, correct Dobermans with temperaments to be proud of. They may be primarily bred for "beauty contests", but you wouldn't know that if you were stupid enough to try to attack me or break into my house.
Please tell me, what is your breed? I'm sure we'd love to know, so that we may encourage another breed to breed into it to make it "better".

If you were very involved in shows, please elaborate - what breed(s) did you show? What registry did you show under? What were your accomplishments, if any?

It is an absolute and undeniable FACT that the anti cropping and docking laws are being pushed, funded, and lobbied by the AR extremist groups. The same groups that also are pushing, funding, and lobbying for forced sterilization, the outlawing of certain breeds, and cumbersome restrictions on breeders.

In the US, this group is the H$U$, along with Peta. The Green Party in Germany is responsible for the outlawing of docking there, except for certain hunting breeds. The same is responsible for the RECENT outlawing of docking in the UK.

I don't really care if YOU can't see beyond the nose on your face, but many of us can. I have watched the inexorable creeping of these restrictions and infringements on MY RIGHTS as a citizen for over 20 years.

If something is not done, and if things continue at the current rate, in the next 20 years, domestic dogs, hobby breeders, and dog events will either be rare, or non existent.

oh COME ON grammy.

Ears were cropped and tails were docked for utilitarian and preventive reasons. Ears bleed mightily when injured, and are attacked by insects causing great irritation and infection. Ears were removed on livestock guardian dogs, fighting dogs, and guard dogs for this reason. Tails usually for the same reasons.

Rottweilers and often other herding breeds were often kept/stables with the livestock they worked. They had tails removed to prevent them from picking up a big hard ball of fecal matter on the end, which would bang on the hocks and cause infected sores. Removing the tail eliminated this.

Also with the small amount of carting/driving I have recently done, I can see why tails were removed often on draft dogs as well.

As I have said in other threads of this nature, there are bigger fish to fry than attacking a safe, minor, superficial procedure performed by a licensed veterinarian. Neglect, abuse, hoarding, continuous chaining in harsh climates... that is cruel.

I get angry when I see a dog so matted that the coat comes off in one big pelt - IMO, poorly kept coats are a hundred times worse than a puppy cropped by an experienced vet.

I cringe when I see long nails on dogs - IMO, long talons for nails are a thousand times worse than a puppy cropped by an experienced vet.

And yet... no one is trying to ban long nails or matted coats. Both of which are much more cruel and cause longlasting suffering - LONGLASTING suffering - than a properly executed cropping procedure. IMO, of course. But what do I know, I've been around cropped puppies for years. I've lived with them, seen the surgery and recovery, posted countless ears and watched countless cropped puppies grow up. I'd offer them little violins if they'd take them, but I haven't known any cropped to even want one, despite not being able to play the instrument.
