EArs..reallllly for dogs that is the ultimate non sexual love zone. I have watched Tatey lovingly kiss Bin's ears and returned, Bronki snuzzled his mother..when a dog is realllllly trying to tell you something, they nibble or snuzzle your ears..Jim figured that out, and i sawVic do it to the artist, that visiting artist could not keep his eyes or hands off my dogs and Vic went totally gaga over him as well. I have only seen him do that to one other person, i should be jealous but i am not. I think it is that tenderness placed in the very closest place to the brain that makes ear cropping so hard for me to accept. Plus if you really look at the ear it is designed so special. Pour water down a dogs head slowly, and it will run between the eyes and the ear is designed to pull it away and down from the inside. A little flip, is at the top to keep it away from the face. The ear is a beautiful and gorgous design that i lovingly press and rub into clay or draw the depths of with a pencil. A natural standing ear usually has a quantity of hair to block out the wind, and gaurd the inside from insects. In all but a very few breeds..i don't know if there is a wildlife animal that does not have protective hair there..i will think on it.
It too designed to protect the canal. That all makes sense to me. Mankind on the other hand baffles my mind. WE cant leave well enough alone. My policy is don't fix it if it works!

I still want to do a montage of dogs with natural ears to the song HAIR only change the words..to EARS i just don't know how.

Why though? its just unnessesary and what does the dog gain from it? an op and some discomfort afterwards, just becase PEOPLE prefare the look of their ears.
totally barbaric IMO
So predictable. Next you'll say people shouldn't have a dog if they crop the ears. The vet told me that it helps stop ear infections by letting the ear breath. Also it lessens the chance of another dog ripping the ear off. My rottweiler had floppy ears and he had to have laser surgery to open the ear canal because of ear infections. And they can hear better and catch sound from different directions better.

Here we go again :)

I personally think that crops look like the dogs ears have been hacked off.

Good vet or not. It still looks like someone has taken a rusty knife and sliced off flesh because of the way the hair grows around the scarring and wound area.

:)

I can't wait till I have kids. I like the small footed look. I think I will bandage up their feet, like they used to do in china all those years ago.

Might be painful and cause discomfort, but it's only short term, and my little beautiful baby will get over it eventually and just THINK of the benefits!! How cute they will look :D

Yeah - there would be UPROAR wouldn't there? Or, is it my choice to deform my child? My dog?
I guess you don't believe in circumsizing babies? Same thing.

With dobes at least, I've heard it's for hearing...

Just like hounds need floppy ears to stir up scents, dobes have huge radar dishes to help collect sound.

It's for the breeds' purpose, some need super-hearing abilities, some are bred for their super-sniffers...

I think cropping is stupid, as well as docking. It doesn't need to be done. If you love your dog, you won't do it. Your dog is not there to look a certain way for you..they are there to be your companion. Putting a dog through an unneccasary operation is irresponsible.
Wow.So I didn't love my dobe cause I had his ears done. I guess I was crying for nothing when he died then. Read my other post on the benifits of cropping. The dog will do better from the surgery then if he never had it.

I don't think anyone said it isn't her business!!
I don't think it's right......PERIOD...... Whether it is a show dog or not.....No point getting so angry b/c you had your dogs ears Cropped.
No one else has shown anger........just talking generally about something that some agree and others disagree on.
After reading your posts I have 2 words. Pipe down.

^^That was rude. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, just because we may not agree with you doesn't give you any right to be so rude. Geez... this thread was actually doing okay. People were trying to educate some of us!

With any luck, other countries will join in soon.:D :D I wish it wasn't taking so long for people to wake up and stop mutilating for cosmetic reasons.:(

I encourage anyone who still believes the myth that cropping and docking are for medical reasons to simply google (medical reasons for ear cropping and tail docking)....see for yourselves that no medical justification exists, this is PURELY COSMETIC SURGERY.
The UK should be more like the US when it comes to cropping laws.

I reviewed the prick ear/drop ear infection rate with the clinics that I work with and found that prick ears are as affected if not more so than drop. Out of the many dogs that I've owned myself, the two with cropped ears were the only two with ear problems. Cropping has no effect in reducing the risk of ear infection. This is a myth perpetuated by breeders to justify cropping. It has absolutely no validity. I'd just hate to see this thread sway to the side of cropping because of false information.
Of the 6 Vets I spoke to, 1 of which will still crop, every single one scoffed at the notion that cropping has any medical justification what so ever!
A decision to crop is simply aesthetic and made by the owner, for the owners benefit in the show ring....it is for superficial reasons and not for the dogs benefit.
Not only is a pup put under unnecessary surgical risk during the crop, but infection, including fungal infections from taping are not uncommon.
One only needs to search for an unbiased source to find out the truth.

Not trying to argue, Doc, but how come so many vets will do the cropping for medical reasons?

I realize that there will ALWAYS be differing views... but if my vet told me that my dog should have cropped ears to help with ear infections, I think I might do it (but NEVER for cosmetic reasons). But, then again, i really really trust my vet... i wouldn't think she would give us misinformation?

THere are a whole gammit of vets out there. WHen Mary tore his breast on teh fence jumping over when she had her pups i didn't know what to do. The skin tear opened up into a circle about 4 inches in diameter. I took her to the vet i had my whole life, the one that i had trusted completely. He took out gauze and wrapped her up. Even then i knew that was wrong. I knew why (after nursing two babies of my own it was more then obvious) so as soon as i got her home, off came the dressing. You couldn't wrap a breast that is going to expand its' size a hundred percent several times a day. She would have ended up with mastitis as well. I could site many many more stories about many more vets. THere are a lot of old world thinkers out there that are behind the times, there are a lot of newbies out there that think they know more then the old timers with their experience. For humans we get second opinions and even THEN we are not sure. I would not put my trust one hundred percent in any physcian. AFter all they are only human too. THis is a topic where there will be no winning and no point in arguing, and absolutely should not be any slamming. It is a place to state an opinion not to try to put down those that disagree with you. That's about all i have to say on that topic.

And Buddy..your priceless:D

You have a point, Smkie.

We just trust our vet so much. She saved Buddy and has fought for him since day one, so I would have a hard time not trusting her, I think.

Oh well, I don't plan on getting a dog that would "require" docking or cropping anyway... ;)

I did too that is my whole point. He took care of all my animals, was trained and partnered with the vet i considered the best ever. He was and still is in many many many ways an excellent vet though through the years i have seen him turn greedy and it sickened me. Babies still go through circumcision, there are many different forms of basically the same topic. I just hate to see this thread turn ugly for there are many valid points and perspectives.

and thank you MOm of 7!;)
