Beautiful British Columbia!!
Mitsu has a smell, a weird sour smell that I have a hard time dealing with, probably because Teagan always smells so darn nice, plus she is pretty much perfect.

I don't think I have a group I would stay out of, but it would depend on the breed and since having mitsu mainly the individual dog. I love mitsu to death, but she is not my kind of dog. But thankfully she is Tylers dog fully and whole heartily. He needs to have his dog as well.

I get the whole smell thing. People tell me all the time that Dobermans don't smell. But I think they do. Not overly so, but they are much more doggy than other breeds I've had. Everything they lay on picks up a dog odour... which is the biggest reason I don't want them on the couch. On the same token, I don't think my hounds (Dachshunds) smelled at all. They hardly ever needed a bath and none of their stuff smelled bad to me. So it definitely depends on the individual person.

I've never had another dog that stunk like this, it's like a mix of fecal matter, rotten fish, dirty gym bag, and a port-a-head, wrapped into a sausage dog.
Good lord now I want you to send me a piece of his laundry, lol. I'm quite curious. My dogs get a "houndy" smell that smells kind of like you've opened a bag of fritos. Bathing them ensures you really only smell it if you're up in their fur. I went almost a year (no lie) without bathing my basset, and then I noticed a sour funk to my comforter ;)

I'll never own anything from the toy group. I really can't stand the majority of small dogs. And the ones I can, I hate bending over in order to interact with them.

On the topic of smell....the only time Zander smells is right after a bath. He doesn't smell like anything to me, and most people say he smells like nothing. Some people has said he smells like a warm candle (???) or fresh bread. I find people sniffing him a lot, actually. It's really weird to turn around and find someone's nose buried in your dog's neck, sniffing and snorting away. Only after a bath does he smell like wet dog. And his breath is typical doggy breath.

The mastiffs, though....YUCK. Like greasy, unwashed hair crossed on teenage B.O. Goose had a warm scent to him, too, but he was Sibe/GSD. The girls had a sweaty dog smell to them.

I think hounds are the only ones I wouldn't own. Nice enough dogs, just not for me.

Otherwise I wouldn't immediately cross off any of the other groups.

For the record, neither of my dogs smell lol.

Are there any breed groups that you literally wouldn't own ONE dog breed in their group? Or maybe make one exception? Or is there a breed group where you'd literally own EVERY breed within that group if humanely possible?

Don't get me wrong, I honestly love and admire ALL dogs... but there's a few breeds I'd prefer to not come home with me.

http://www.akc.org/breeds/

Hound -most of the hounds are out for me. All of the scent hounds for sure, I could possibly see a Saluki, basenji Or beezer in my house.

Sporting - Most of the sporting breeds. Maybe a nice parti cocker.
Working - I like dobes and great danes. But I know the dobes are not a good fit here, danes its a good possiblity.

Terrier - None would really fit here.
Toy - No toys.
Non-Sporting - Most of the non-sporting. I WILL own more dals. I do love the bostons and frenchies, but thats about it.

Herding -

Misc. - Portuguese Podengo Pequeno I like along with the AZawakh.
Of the breeds I like and don't have, I can honestly only see me owning a a couple (Basenji, Ibizan hound or a dane).

Hounds--
Scenthounds: no so much
Ridgebacks & Sighthounds: very very cool (smooth breeds> hairy breeds)
Elkhounds: I like them

Gundogs--
Retrievers: love them
Weims & Vizslas: are cool
Pointers: GSPs are ok
Spaniels & setters: not so much

Toys-- I'm not big on most of them but Italian Greyhounds I would like to own one day, brussels griffons are cute. Powder Puff Crestie, MinPin, Manchester Terrier, Toy Fox are nice enough.

Terriers--
Bully terriers: English bull, staffie, amstaff etc are nice (APBT are awesome)
Other terriers: is it sleek and does it have prick years? Then yes. Cairns and Westies are nice enough, but most others don't do much for me.

Non Sporting: yeah most of these I find appealing, I really wanted a Shiba Inu when I was 12, I also like Eskies, Bostons, Frenchies, Peis, Chows, Spitzes, coated Xolos, Dals, Lundehunds.

Working, Herding--yes, I quite like-love these.

Misc class--yes but the ones I like fit into working or sighthound already.

Basically, re: appearance I like sleek prick eared dogs. I DO NOT like droopy hairy ears (that look like pigtails, like on spaniels) and I usually don't like hairy faces (with some exceptions).

Temperament is hard to tell because they vary so much even within breeds. Despite listing them I wouldn't seek out the vast majority of them and if a dog fell into my lap it would be down to the individual.

I don't think there's any group where there are no dogs that at least interest me. Not saying I would seek out every breed listed, but a lot of them I do really like.

Going by AKC groups

Sporting - I definitely like Tollers and I'd love to get some more first hand experience with Flatties. I think they are so so stunning!

Hound - I can say that there are zero scent hounds I'm interested in, I do like sighthounds however. I love every Whippet I've met and I'd love to learn more about Borzois and Silken Windhounds.

Working - I love Leonbergers and Swissies!

Terrier - I had an awesome JRT and wouldn't argue if another one fell into my lap. I also like Border Terriers.

Toy - I really really want a Chihuahua and a Cav some day. Definitely on my list. I also love Chinese Cresteds, Papillons and Havanese and could see myself with these breeds as well.

Non-Sporting - Frenchie!

Herding - My comfort zone. Not many I wouldn't own, honestly. My family/I have had Collies, GSDs, ACDs, Aussies, a Swedish Vallhund, and now an English Shepherd. Lots of experience with Corgis. In the future I would like more ESs, and I could see myself with a Collie, a Groenendael and/or Tervuren, a BC, Cardigan maybe, or a GSD. Would like to learn more about Beaucerons!

Misc. - Would love to meet a Portuguese Podengo (Medio preferably!)

Oh I did forget about Great Danes! I feel like they're on my "someday in the far future" list but ahhh the short life spans, etc :(

The only dogs I would never own would be from the toy group. I have heard that there's a certain odor attached to the hound group, but I have never picked up on that.

My hound always has a terrible smell, such as dead fish, coyote poop, dead animals. but thats all due to him rolling in it. lol. After his bathes and if he goes a few days with out needing another (since he almost rolls in something daily) he doesnt smell at all. Even my non dog loving BFF will sit with him on her lap and love on him. If he stunk I know for a fact she would not do such a thing. She pretty much hates dogs. But loves solo and Blaze since she has known both since babies.

No group, but lots of types.

I don't like massive shedders... labs, gsd, dogs I find hairy.

I like wash and go. I'm not going to be bathing and brushing knots out.

I like a dog that wants to play, so lap dogs, whilst cute, are no fun for me. Or dogs which usually don't go that far (some bulldogs, some toy breeds, some short legged breeds).

I don't want a delicate dog. Rough n tumble please! Out in sun, wind and rain. No hairless or non hardy types please!

Regarding hound smells and dog smells in particular, OH YES THEY DO have a smell. All dogs smell different, though. I dogsit a little poodle who is the closest thing to a scentless dog I've ever met, but the other dog she lives with is a little terrier mix who has a really strong doggy odor that never goes away, even immediately after a bath with dawn dish soap.

My dog never really smells like "dog", but I'm sure she would if she spent more time outside being a dog. :p

I don't think there are many breeds I'd not own, let alone whole groups... My only real "avoid" would be heartbreak breeds with short lifespans or bad health issues...

A hole in the bottom of the sea.
Sally gets a smell and a "film" only a week or so after bathing. She's been that way for the last 7 years--no matter what food she's on, etc. If we dare let her go for months in between baths she starts to smell like a hamster cage :p

Sporting - I definitely want to own a Toller some day, and there are a few other breeds in there that I wouldn't turn down if given to me LOL.

Hounds - They aren't really my thing, but I have developed a fondness for Ridgebacks. I also like Elkhounds.

Working - There are a bunch of Working breeds that I would own - Malamutes, Danes, Rotties, Samoyeds, and Sibes.

Terrier - Eh, not big on the Terriers, TBH. Not sure if I would own any of those...

Toy - The only Toys I like are Paps and Poms

Non-Sporting - Finkies (obviously!), Eskies, Poodles, Shibas

Herding - Definitely some dogs in there I would own... Aussies, BCs, GSDs, Icelandic Sheepdogs, BUHUNDS!, and maybe a few more...

Misc - I actually don't think I would own any of those...

On the smelly dog front - I haven't given Kimma a bath since.. October? And she doesn't smell at all. That's one of the reasons I picked this breed - they are totally wash and wear, and they like never smell. Even with Kimma going in to lakes and junk for swimming. It's fantastic. Pen got a bath because I wanted to try out my new dryer, and Bubbles gets a bath before each time I show her (mainly just so I can dry her and "fluff" her out LOL).

As a general blanket statement, I would not own breeds from the scent hound group, or northern breeds. I could find a dog from every group though.

I think I like dogs from the sporting and working groups best though.
