If it's me that was talking about the bark, it's not the screechy sound. I'm not sure what it is--it's hard to describe. It's a real shame, too, because a lot of the dogs that I've met that have barks that hurt my ears have been really great dogs, other than that.

I've never heard about the stinky hound thing to be honest? Hmmm... my grandma's Foxhound doesn't really smell, I don't think.

Edit - Well ... take that back, she actually does. When I was watching her for a week, my car reeked of "dog" afterwards. I didn't smell it when I was with her so much, but more so once she was gone. But again she's never bathed. I don't think they've even given her a bath from when they got her from the shelter! So for that, she doesn't smell that bad, lol.

Our Golden Retriever growing up smelled awful. After you'd pet her, you'd have that stink on your hands. But I blame that to her never being bathed and being fed a crappy food.

I really wanna hang out around more herders! I don't see a whole lot. I do know that Jackson LOVES this particular Aussie at the dog park. He just runs and runs and runs with him ... it's the most I think I've ever seen him run with another dog. He's only met him three times now but they clicked right off the bat.

I don't think you can generalize that all hounds smell though. Freehold's rescued walker hound doesnt' smell and he isn't bathed regularly.
Yes, I can, because every single one I've ever know, has! Except, for the few show dogs I've passed by, who were so caked in chalk dust you couldn't breath. Again, maybe it's just that you're use to that particular odor, it's VERY particular, and EXTREMELY offensive to me and my family. Let me ask you, what do you think of a skunk? What do you think of fish? What do you think of Turtles? What do you think of roast beef? What do you think of chopped liver? What do you think of blue cheese? What do you think of sour milk? What do you think of Axe deodorant? What do you think of Fabreeze?

Just because it doesn't bother you, just because you don't find it bad/annoying/offensive, doesn't mean everyone feels the same way.

My hound does not smell at all. Maybe there's an underlying issue that he smells? If you bathe regularly, he shouldn't smell. :) And yeah, not every single hound smells.
That's what I thought when we first brought him here. We inherited him from a bad family situation (then his people then died). I figured, all these other dogs I knew before, were just never bathed, never fed good food, (like you all say) I'll fix this. More than a year later...no progress. I've never had another dog that stunk like this, it's like a mix of fecal matter, rotten fish, dirty gym bag, and a port-a-head, wrapped into a sausage dog.

There is a hound funk but there is also a greasy coated terrier funk that goes with the long coated terriers like westies, aussies, yorkies, and scotties. I use a grease cutting shampoo and it worked wonders but that funk just comes right back within a week.

Not everyone's sense of smell perceives odors the same way -- or even perceives all the same odors, so hounds might well smell like the zombie apocalypse to one person but not have that much of an odor at all to someone else.

I noticed that with Ada. Her coat was really just stinky and awful

The filas my boss had always had a smell to them. Of course it wasn't any worse (but very different) than the smell young intact males carry around with them.

Like Renee said, not everyone perceives it the same.

I haven't noticed (or been around them enough) hounds to have an excessive smell.

Lab ears however seem to be inevitably stinky but that could be living in las vegas with swimming pools all over.

YES!! Finally someone else who understands. I try to describe this to everyone, but no one listens or cares, they just keep rambling on like I'm insane and their dog smells like roses, well, the kind of roses they like, which might not be the kind I like, to which yes, I don't much care for those heavy scented mutant roses!

Which is what I find most people who also can't stand the HDO have found once they got the dog home too. No, you can't smell this odor just being near the dog (well, most of the time, I've been around those few who you could smell a mile away), it seeps out of Noods into the things he comes into contact with, IE, the sofa, his crate, his blanket, the favorite de-stuffed toy he plays with...etc.

Cats always stink to me. I can smell the odor of my cat wafting around my house and no one else can. It drives me nuts!

I have met some pretty stinky hounds, and it's definitely a pretty specific kind of funk... but I've also met plenty that didn't stink at all. There's a lot of individual variation in the dogs as well as in how people perceive it, IMO.

It's like bleu cheese. Some people taste it and it's one of their favorite flavors. It tastes like soapsuds to me, lol. That doesn't mean it isn't good, just that it isn't good to ME. We process that particular sensory information differently.

Oh you're GOOD! That is a beautiful description! And I too, also don't care for Blue cheese, I prefer "fresh" varieties more often, Mmmmm, herb goat cheese spread! <that, would be another good example, I know a lot of people who don't care for that "tang", it's okay, that means more for me :p.

*snags part of Welsh's goat cheese* :D

I grew up with a mother who's favorite phrase is, "I don't like it; it's no good!" That always struck me as so wrong . . . I got smacked a few times for telling her, "no, it just means you don't like it." ;)

Well my point was more of a 'no discernible smell' vs a non offensive smell. I have met some good and stinky hounds and yes its a 'different' sort of an odour. Just to me I don't notice he smells any different than any other dog. I don't live with him so its not that I am used to him... So I posit one can't say all hounds do. You can say many, even most but not all..

Mia starts stinking so much faster than Summer. She's kind of got a sour type smell. It's gross. She gets bathed all the time. Summer never smells.

I haven't had a chance to get "used to" hound smells- I've never had a hound, just met several over the years.
What Renee said makes sense, though like I said I've met hounds who needed to be taken to a car wash and others that have perfectly clean and huggable. :D
