Practical Solutions to Welfare Problems in Dog Breeding

I haven't posted here for a long time, but I saw an article written by people I know about people I know, about litters that I know, and couldn't resist. Doberluv- that arcticle you posted was written by Cardigan folk who I am friends with. Cardigans are a true working breed and we...

    A Breeders Thoughts

Yeah, because it's not enough for me to have one special needs rescue dog already. I don't need to be chastized, thank you very much. I'm quite capable of knowing when I'm being ridiculous and joking, and if you can't tell then that's your problem LOL ;) People who rescue are great people...

    A Breeders Thoughts

Well, looks like I'll be taking Harper back so that I can find a blind, lame dog with a horrible temperament that is dog and human aggressive with severe digestive issues so that I have to spend all my time trying to rehab this dog and all my money trying to fix issues that I didn't cause so I...

    A Breeders Thoughts

No, not silly. You're allowed to want what you want. If you want to save a broken dog, that's great. But frankly, that's not what I personally bargained for when I rescued. I wanted a pet first and foremost- a dog I could take on walks, take to the park, etc. I didn't bargain on spending...

Rescue -- Just Not Into It?

I don't think I was ripping as much as I was defending my own reasons for choosing a purebred dog. I find that many more rescue people then breeder people are on the defensive. I've a good friend who rescues and who never misses a beat to bash purebred dogs from breeders, and her friends are...

Rescue -- Just Not Into It?

I see where you're coming from. I would want that kind of guarentee even if I wanted a pet. Not everyone wants that, and for them I'd say rescue is fine. I also believe in breed preservation, and we need good puppy buyers and young people who are interested in the breed as well.

Rescue -- Just Not Into It?

I disagree. Many genetic issues crop up in old age. You may not know that your dog will be dysplastic at 8 if you get him at four from a rescue. If you know that you have two parents who are OFA excellent, they will most likely produce OFA fair to good puppies, who should also be prelimed.

Rescue -- Just Not Into It?

Yes, any dog can have problems. This is true. I guess I just like to know what I'm getting. With my current pup, there is a depth of pedigree on both sides for rock solid temperament and health and while nothing is ever fail safe, it's a heck of a whole lot more "sure" then adopting an...

Rescue -- Just Not Into It?

First off, I think rescue is really important even though I personally may not be "into it." Someone out there has to catch the unwanted dogs and cats that most people are too irresponsible to take care of. I think that in the right circumstances, you can find a great rescue dog. It will...

    A Breeders Thoughts

Abby, in a word. Abby does not bite, but stable and good she is not. Abby has cost us probably twice what Harper has cost, not that it should ever be a factor. But, that's what people are afraid of and I don't blame them. People SHOULD know the risks of getting a shelter dog, JUST Like...

    A Breeders Thoughts

I don't know... Cali I don't try to push you or anyone else to support breeder only dogs, even though in my heart of hearts I think that if all breeders were like my mentor we'd have practically no dogs in shelters. They'd have sweet, well bred companions and they'd know what they were...

    A Breeders Thoughts

Hi Cali, I understand where you are coming from. I think that posts like this stem from the frustration of people who actually are doing right by the breed who are sick of guilt trips from people who rescue and lump all breeders in the same catagory. Maybe most people don't care if a...

    Please help

Well, that's an interesting question: if you go through a purebred dog breeder, then you'll want THEM to have health tested the parents before the litter was even bred. The health tests depend on the breed. If you go to the pound, you'll just have to take your chances with what you get...

    Please help

Hounds are definitely not known for being easy to train. And most hounds aren't great watchdogs, surprisingly. A blood hound will always follow its nose no matter what you are telling him to do. His instincts will tell him that nothing is as important as the trail. German Shepherds are...

How Many Dogs is Too Many to Own??

I know a lady that has 17 dogs, and she also keeps exotic pets such as chinchillas, rabbits and birds. Keeps three breeds, but only has two that she is actually breeding. My mentor says her house is a zoo, and that there's alot of crating and rotating and outside kennels... It's a pretty busy...

Dog pedigrees unearth genes for psychiatric disease

My goodness! I had no idea that pitbull terriers had that type of temperament problem in the breed. It makes me wonder why people would breed an animal that just stares off into space, or obsessively chases its tail. I can't imagine a dog like that would be much fun to live with. All of...
