Yup that's kind of where I am. In 4-5 years Web and Kim will be 8-9, Mira will be 5-6, so all will be pretty experienced...so I think I could be open to a pup then to start...by the time s/he were ready to do much Kim & Web would be in double digits. I hope they aren't slowing down, but I also hope to have accomplished most of our trialing goals by then so in terms of competing and such I could probably handle another by then...

And yeah I agree with Dekka on the value of having different types of dogs to run lol. It took Web 6 months and only 7 trials to be competing fully in ExcellentB in AKC agility. Kim? A year and 11 trials from NovA to ExcB. And she had more training first. Part of it is her reactivity and fear issues, part is just that she's a faster dog who really loves the sport and gets a bit...wild at times lol. But she is really fun to run and at her first trial running ExcB she was placing 4th and 3rd of 30 dogs and less than a second behind the two top dogs in our area...which has me really excited about our future! Mira is my balls-to-the-wall dog with no sense of self-preservation. FUN but trialing could be interesting lol. All bring something different to the table, though.
In 3-4 years Summer will be in the double digits. :( So I am thinking maybe by then. Keeping Ada just means pushing the dream dog back. But I'm a firm believer you get the dogs you need versus the ones you want. This morning when I woke up she turned into a wiggle storm and then crawled up in my lap and slopped a big kiss right on my face. How could you not fall in love? ;)

We fostered a chihuahua mix puppy a little over five years ago... I still have a hard time talking about her.

To make a long story short, she was very near death when I ended up with her. I kept her for 6 weeks as a foster.

Anyway, before we had gotten Roxi (the foster), we had decided to add another chi. Keeping Roxi would've meant not getting the dog I had wanted.

We adopted Roxi out to a very, very good home at 12 weeks of age. That night, I decided I wanted her back because I missed her so much. Her new owner wouldn't give her back and I was really upset for a while. We ended up getting Chloe (the dog I had initially wanted) a few weeks later. I still miss Roxi to this day :(

Oh I completely understand. I don't talk about it often but when I got Web I was on the list for a litter of Canaan pups which were on the ground...one of the reasons I decided against it, and forfeited my deposit, was because Web sort of fell into my life. With all his..."challenges" shall we say, he really is the dog I needed. And he's a shameless charmer when he's not being an evil supergenius lol. Wouldn't trade him for the world.

Whatever you decide with Ada will work out. She's lucky to have you now, that's for certain. And maybe you are lucky to have her too :)

Not until Lucy's gone, I think. So anywhere from 8-10 years (we think she's 6-7). I really like being a one dog household, and I think Lucy does too (based on the dog sitting and fostering I've done).

Who knows though...it's not set in stone, it's just what I most envision.

Lily doesn't like sharing me all that much. Its been a whole different kettle of fish with another dog that actually belongs to me, albiet as a foster. That said, she's been a saint with Scout.

I really need to get Scout placed soon. She kind of jumped ship to me after my friend's mom got her because she loved Lily and wanted that type of dog. Clearly she didn't realize just how much training and exercise it takes to keep Lily content and Scout has a lot of baggage on top of that already high maintenance breed type. Scout's doing awesome now though and needs a sport home that can do even more with her.

Once Scout is in her forever home (and even if that never comes...) I would still wait a good 2-5 years before adding a male dog, maybe even as much as 8 years. And it would absolutely have to be a male. Lily is not very tolerant of other bitches that aren't puppies.

I generally prefer young adults, but I want the luxury of getting a dog with no baggage. So it will probably be a puppy. Lily would LOVE to be able to raise a puppy too.

I do not want to raise a pup with Scout here because well she's a foster with baggage. I love her dearly, but she needs a more chill home than my rental with ghetto upstairs neighbors that fight all the time.

It will be a malinois or dutch shepherd. I really love both breeds and love cracked out high energy dogs. Yes, I kow I'm totally insane for that. I am not totally ruling out DDR/Czech GSD's either. And I know someday I'll have another BC (its what I grew up with, love 'em!). I have a pretty good idea of what I want and where to go to get it. I will probably work with my trainer when picking something because he's got so many years of experience. I've already gotten to sit in on some puppy groundwork he's doing with a policeman friend who just imported a couple pups from the Netherlands recently. Its amazing the drive they have even that young.

If, heaven forbid, something awful happened I would either go to the shelter and get a dog the same alaskan sled dog mutt mix as Lily or I'd wait and save up for a puppy.

My cat is six, hopefully she'll live another 8-10 years. And she hates other cats, so I'm exempt from getting another. Yet another reason to get a pup when I add another dog as well because I like really high prey drive dogs. I never ever leave my dogs and cat unattended. The girls are good with my cat, but they'd eat any other given the chance.

Not until after uni which will be at least another 7-8 years. I would like to get a puppy while Fudge is still around though so he can whip it into shape lol. There's not a chance of me getting another dog while I still live here because the next dog will be dads Ridgeback and after it's grown up I want to have moved out lol. Whether that works or not we'll still have to see.

Just look at my situation. Set up to get a pup from my dream litter, breeders choice, went and met the puppies... decided I should wait, and tada, now I've got Crash, who is pretty much the EXACT opposite from what I wanted to be training right now.

That is crazy. You wont believe it but that was the SAME thing with Walker we were set to import a Canaan pup and decided to pull out when we got Walker.

As for another dog Im not too sure.

Probably not for 5-7 years. I like our 3 dog household and hopefully everyone will live forever so that means putting off getting another dog. When we do it will most likely be a rescue and I'm hoping that I can talk Matt into a senior dog. :) We could add another dog now...but it would be a major PITA and someone would get shorted on attention or training. So, yeah, probably not happening.

I went through this exactly with my GSD. Only had her for a couple of months but my JRT hated her so we rehomed - I soon realized I made a terrible mistake and I wasn't coping with her not being there, and the new owners wouldn't budge. Who doesn't give a 13 year old girl her dog back? I think I cried every night for months and I still get tears in my eyes thinking about her.

At the soonest, not until Amber is gone.

But more realistically, once I'm living on my own, and not in a dorm. So that's 2-3 years. I'm definately going to try for a rescued pit bull, but my parents may want me to get a bigger, more protective dog, as I plan on living alone in a big city. Who knows.

:(

It's such a horrible feeling.

I couldn't stop crying when her owner told me that... I mean, she had her for one night and I had her for 6 weeks.

I've gotten picture updates and know she's in a good home, but to this day it's something I still regret.

I won't be adding a new dog until I have a fenced backyard and one of my dogs passes away. I really hope the backyard comes before a dog passing away, but with both my boys having serious medical problems, I really don't know :(

The only "requirements" for my next dog is that he/she must be under 30 pounds, preferably lower shedding, and good with other dogs/people/animals.

Not for a long time I hope. My dogs are all young at 2, 3 and 4 years old and as long as all three are around, I will not be seeking out another permanent dog. Two or three is a good number for me, and while I can do four, I don't really want to at this point in my life. Even when the Dobes pass, anywhere between 4 and 7 years from now probably (hopefully longer!), I might just stick with just Dance for a little while. Reason being is I want to further my education and it would just not be realistic to add a puppy to my life between now and the next 8 years or so. Who knows, that could change, but right now I'm more than content with the three I have. :)
I forgot to add the "what will it be" last night! My next dog, regardless of how many years from now it'll be, will either be another Toller or or an English Shepherd. Or, if I'm living in a situation where I don't have to worry about breed restrictions, my next dog could also likely be another Rottweiler or a GSD.

That's so heartbreaking. :(

We had to rehome our three dogs (Dixie, Lucy, and Holly) due to our living situation, and now we are homeowners, and have a stable situation for dogs. I often wish we could get Lucy back.

Dixie's in a great home, she never was a perfect fit for me (of course if her owners told me they couldn't keep her any longer, I'd take her back in a heartbeat, but I am content with her new home).

Holly passed away soon after we rehomed her, so there's no chance of getting her back.

Lucy went to a great home as far as I know, but unlike with Dixie's home, I've never felt content with where she went. She lives out of state, and I'm unable to visit her. I never met her new owners. They seem great, but Lucy was just...our dog through and through. I feel like no one could ever know her or understand her the way we did. I freaking helped her mom deliver her, and bottle fed her when her mom died for crying out loud. I was practically her mother...=/ I don't think I'll ever be at peace with the decision to rehome her. It breaks my heart to think about. But there again, we never would've gotten Chloe if we hadn't given up Lucy, and Chloe is my heart dog. Regardless, I'd be thrilled to have Lucy back.

Oh I forgot the next breed too... I'm not sure. Maybe another malinois, maybe a tervern, maybe a border collie, maybe another sbt.... I just don't know! It will definitely be a herder or bully though, we've found our groove for sure.

Haven't decided yet. It is too hard to forsee the future with college and all. If I end up living off campus, I might adopt a adult small breed from the shelter. If I'm living on campus, that is a different story. I'll probably stick with smaller pets that I could sneck into the dorms.

just kidding
