I'm surprised to see so many people saying they dislike labs and golden retrievers. I wonder if it's because these breeds are somewhat the de facto "American dog" stereotype, and some people prefer to be somewhat against the mainstream.
Speaking for myself, I don't think that is a part of it. And actually, I've met a few goldens I really liked; I'm still waiting for a lab to surprise me.

I think one of the biggest things has already been mentioned; because they are so popular, every schmo on the street is breeding them, so you get a lot of really badly bred ones. My friends and I refer to them as "mock labs" and "mock goldens". They are very distinctive looking and acting - lighter in build, narrow heads, very barky, very high strung. When 40% of what you see in a breed is the worst of it's kind, it can be hard to remember the good ones.

For me, even most of the nicely bred ones are very pushy with their bodies, very in-your-face, panting dogs; all traits that many people clearly either like or don't mind. I'm pretty protective of my personal space, so it doesn't work for me. Obviously they have some great traits - there is a reason they are so popular!

I honestly don't dislike any type of breed... there are certain breeds that aren't "for me," though. However, I would never turn away a breed that was in need.

Dogs that aren't for me:

Labs
Golden Retrievers
Furry toy breeds (like Yorkies, Malteses, etc)
Most terriers
Hounds

I am suprised by the number of poodle haters too! I didn't like them until I started researching them, and all three of mine are amazing dogs! I think people are missing out - I'll never be without one!
I guess many people (mostly mans) don't like them beacuase even the males they look so femenine.

My dad never had liked one, he dislikes dogs with curly hair.

He says they are goin to get full of ticks and it will be imposible to take them out.

But him and myself have curly hair, and we are not full of ticks :D ;)

I really don't care for labs, Or any breed that is so *Needy*! I can't stand the constant intrusion to my personal space!

Even though I have a beagle, By not my choice we just sort of fit after my family adopted him and he just went with me when we moved, but i don't care for a lot of scent hounds... I don't like the stubborneish type dog that likes to pee everywhere and not listen. Though Now I do like beagles since barry :)

I don't mind the boxer's energy, It just exhausts me after a few hours!! Love the personality, Just can't do it 24-7 with a 70lb dog...

Pugs and bulldogs are adorable, I'd adopt one, but I wouldn't buy one from a breeder... Maybe I'm goofy but I can't see supporting someone that breeds such a deformed dog that it can't breed or give birth alone, and has to have its nostrils enlarged!! I talked to a pug owner at petsmart once and the poor things had to have not one, but BOTH there noses enlarged... That's crazy! Sorry showpugs I still love Alice!!!

I like playful dogs that are happy to sleep or play, don't matter either way and that don't need to be touching me 24-7, but then don't mind cuddling on MY terms... Is that asking too much?!

Schipperkes (sp?)! We had one that lived the next block over when I was little and I couldn't tell you how many times that little jerk attacked me when I walked by their house! I just have no love for those little shipperkes since that one.

Both my lab and golden are what you consider "mock lab" and "mock golden" than. Hannah has most physical traits of the labs and Elwood has the very barky and VERY high strung trait of the bad ones.

I'd have to say... Border collies. *runs and hides* I think most BCs are beautiful dogs, but the temperament just isn't for me. I can't stand the stare, it's unsettling. Granted, I'm used to the Doberman Stare... they have that same BC stare... but it's only used on bad guys!

I also don't like "vusy" dogs - I want a dog with an off switch, and the off switches in most BCs have been miswired... or weren't installed at all. ;)

No offense taken. I realize that there is a huge misconception amongst the general public regarding my breed and that is something I hope to change by breeding healthy pugs. I have owned 5 pugs in my life and NOT ONE ever needed nostril surgery. Pugs are one of the most ancient breeds on earth and a breed I deeply treasure that has a lot to offer. I surely don't consider myself a breeder of deformed dogs, but I realize many think so. It's sad, really.

I think the main issue I have with goldens and labs is the constant need to please. I'm odd with this I want a dog that likes to work with me while maintaining a level of independant thinking. Huskies are too independent goldens are too dependent if that makes sense. I also like more protective breeds though smaller active fun dogs are great too.

So no to huskies though I think there the most beautiful breed of all, in fact no to almost all nordic/spitz breeds though I may have an Akita one day. All hounds sight and scent are out. goldens, labs, flatcoats are all too puppyish for too long, chessies are the only retriever that i think would suit me. No terriers except for maybe airdales and pit bulls. Love GSD's and Aussies but belgians and borders take that energy level a step too far. Of the toys anything that's active, playful and trainable is fine. Working breeds might be too "hard" for me right now though someday I hope to own one. Don't know yet how I feel about the giant breeds, in general not a fan off yappyness, drool, and excessive grooming requirements.

I
German Shepard' s , Chows and Akitas scare me so I don't really like them much either.
Out of curiosity is this due to a bad experience? Just wondering because to me ACD's are one of the tougher more intimidating breeds. I hope to own one someday ;)

Almost everyone on this board dislikes pugs and bulldogs
Pugs are one of my favorite breeds of dog! I am not owned by one though lol. Hounds are favorite group of dogs.

I don't HATE ANY dog breed whatsoever, but my least favorite that I would never purposely look for:

Golden retrievers
Labs
Small, fluffy toy dogs that need a lot of grooming
Bully breeds (Except for Rotties and Dobies..Those are two of my favorite breeds)
Spaniels, any kind. Just not my type of dog.
And I think thats about it.

Just curious how many tollers are in Aus?
number rising very quickly, a first discovered them a few years go and showed my sister because they're "her sort of dog" but since then they have started popping up everywhere.
Won't be long before the BYB's catch on i imagine.

I find one of the things that turn me off about them is that they seem so "predictable" i know that its a stereotype bu I'm stuck thinking it. PLus I'm mad on super athletic breeds with heaps of energy.
Plus I'm not so fond of the love-everyone attitude, all my favourite breeds are very reserved with strangers and I admire that quality to an extent.
They just seem to "typicial dog" for me and it doesn't work for me.
Its jsut that I wouldn't own one, I love the ones I meet in person :)

Labs and goldens are good dogs, but not my favorites either. And I can say this right? I've had a half a golden and a full field lab in the past.

Most labs I see are very poorly bred and really all over the place energy wise. It doesn't help that about half of all dogs where I live are labs. Pete was very active but he had a kind of regal quality to him which I can't really describe. He could be really focused, which seems odd for a lab. I love a good moderate lab, though. Not show stocky, not overly skinny with a thin tail. Those are gorgeous dogs, imo. Probably simply because that's what I'm used to.

I like Goldens better than labs, but I think a lot of that has to do with the hair. I like hairy dogs. (except in sighthounds)

The very doting, dependent personality is okay for me as long as the dog has brains to go along with it. I don't want a dog that doesn't think on it's own, but one that bonds to everyone is okay for me. Beau is a happy, affectionate, fun little guy but he's also smart as a whip. However, I also enjoy personalities like Nikki's. She's very particular about who she likes. She listens to me better than anyone else. And she has a mean streak, which sounds horrible to say I like it. She can be a real bitch. lol I guess with her it's nice knowing our bond is special because I know she doesn't like everyone and she chose to be my companion.

I'm not a fan of most terriers. They are way too over-the-top for me. I'm laid back, live and let live, the gameness of terriers makes me exhausted just looking at them. I'm also not such a fan of wire coats, which a lot of terriers have.

Labs and goldens are just too needy for me. Especially labs. And most escpecially poorly bred labs. There was a chocolate lab that lived next door to us in Maryland who I swear weighed about 175 lbs., panted non-stop in all weather and was as dumb as a box of rocks. I had to rescue it once out of the river in my kayak because he'd taken a soccer ball in to the water, but it was too big for him to get his jaw around so every time he'd bite at it, it would just float further out. I watched this go on for a while and I don't think anyone was home over at his house, and finally I got in my kayak, paddled out and took his ball. I'm pretty sure he would have continued to chase that thing until he became exhausted and drowned. On the other hand our other neighbor had a black lab named Flo who was really awesome. But in general I'm not so big on the retrievers.

I like dogs that can entertain themselves and don't need me around to tell them what to do all the time. I like the more independent breeds, the hounds and mastiffs and northern breeds.

I am diverse so I cant say there is actually a breed I wouldnt want to own.:p just circumstances where it would be impossible to own for me. so for right now I couldnt own large breeds. I grew up with shitz, poodles, gsd, cockers, and a Lab. so I have been around a few and they were all just absolutely wonderful dogs in their own way.

I do NOT dislike ANY breed of dog but there are MANY that I would NOT live with......EVER.

Husky type breeds.
Hounds that come to mind when you say hound, Beagles, Bassets, Blood, Black & Tan, etc... Don't care for the howling type bark.
Poodles and other high maintenance dogs, this is just due to their grooming needs, otherwise I wouldn't have any aversion to living with one.
The vast majority of smaller dogs, because I like a dog you can really ROMP with, and who will ROMP you right back, LOL

I think EVERY dog on my list above is BEAUTIFUL and I am glad that I am able to see them in this world. I am equally glad that there is a dog/breed to please every dog lover out there :)
