Honey2006, your dog is not a purebred, it's a F2 cross. It takes far longer than just 2 generations to establish a breed that actually breeds true. Just because this specific crossbreed has a name (cockapoo) doesn't make it a breed.

i have a golden retriever too- and both he (a pure breed) and my darling cockapoo are just as "equal" in the sense that they are both loving and beautiful.... and Honey is just as "pure" as any doggie out there ;) she actually cost alot more than our golden too... why is there so much contraversy? a dog is a dog is a dog... i happen to love the looks of cockapoos and that's why i paid so much for her... whether or not she is looked upon as being a "pure breed" is not my concern because it has become aparent that SOME people (not all) who own true "pure breeds" get offended when an adorable "crossbreed" becomes a popular breed... it's like they try to offend you by saying, "well your dog isnt a pure breed"... you know WHO CARES?!?! they're cute & obviously people like them just as much as "pure breeds" because they are very popular...

and back to the topic- people are breeding other breeds with poodles beacuse theya re hypo-alergenic....at least that's what i can gather...

no hard feelings people- i love ALL dogs... and cats for that matter:)

honey, people who care about the well being of all dogs are the ones who care. Mixes are generally not from great places and while your pup may end up with an ok life what about its parents or the poor dogs being pts in the shelter right now. Your dog is also no better than them.

they are offending those of us who work our butts off doing rescue. Its disgusting actually. We are not upset because its not a purebreed but because its irresponcible breeding that happens,it also happens with purebreeds. Not even looking at the fact that its a mix they are almost always from a bad breeder. Its hard enough with purbreeds, even worse with mixes.

Not to mention the hypo allergenic is not something that happens with all these dogs and why it ends bad for a lot of them. Its sick that breeders promise hyp allergenic and then the pup has to be rehomed when its not.

The main problem is that there are millions of perfectly excellent mixes (which essentially is what all these cockapoo etc. dogs are) that are dying everyday while these little buggers are being bred.

That's funny, because I would think it would be rational to think that when 17 million dogs are killed every year from suporpulation, people should stop breeding unless they have a very good reason to (ie, keeping a line of healthy dogs that are bred for a purpose other than money)?

Guess it's just me though.
Amen to that!!!

I'm sorry to say, but as soon as you mentioned that you paid more for your mixed breed dog and actually PURCHASED the dog from a breeder almonst made me throw up in my mouth a little...especially considering the fact that you can get the same mutt in a shelter for about 50 dollars around here.

First of all, and this has been repeated on this thread time and time again until no end: WE DO NOT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MIXED BREEDS. ALOT OF US OWN THEM AND LOVE THEM TO DEATH..I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MUTTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
it has nothing to do with LIKING the dogs...it has to do with the BREEDING of the mutts....irresponsible breeders mix dogs...responsible ones do not....end of story..

A responsible mutt breeder is an oxymoron. These dogs are not pure breeds - they have no standards/conformation, and no generations behind them (at least not enough to make it matter) to properly test genetics of the so called "breed"....they are fad dogs...bred for one purpose only...to make money...good breeders breed for the betterment of the breed...and actually end up losing money....sorry to say, but you got fooled big time when you bought your mutt...I don't even want to know about the parents...

Not to mention, there are literally thousands upon thousands of mixed breed dogs in shelters that are, yes, as good as your dog...why did you go buy one may I ask? Did this breeder even provide you with a contract or a health guarantee? Did they show you full health certificates? Do the parents have titles? Did they screen you? Were you allowed to meet the parents of the puppies?

I'm sure the answer to most of these questions is no, and therefore...it proves why people that breed mixed breeds need to get another fricken job and stop making our lives more difficult...

And some of you pro mutt breeding people might argue that well, there are also tons of purebred dogs in shelters too!....yes, and those are due to backyard breeders, not responsible ones...those dogs were not bred for confirmation, for purpose, for breed standards, for health, for temperament..they were bred for the same reasons that mutts are bred - for money.............otherwise, they would not end up in a shelter. Excellent local breeders can sue owners for over 10,000 dollars if their pup ends up in a shelter or is rehomed instead of bringing the puppy back to the breeder...they pretty much demand to stay in touch with you until your dog is dead...not to mention the fact that alot of them are involved in rescue themselves..this is what its all about folks, but unfortunately, these people are rare and hard to find...they do not need to advertise...their pups are sold through word of mouth and at shows.

So instead of buying a puppy, especially if its just for companionship and no specific purpose like herding, some kind of sport, hunting, etc...then go to your nearest shelter!!!

I'm gonna get off my soapbox now...phew.

especially considering the fact that you can get the same mutt in a shelter for about 50 dollars around here.

Most people say you can get any mix or purebred that you want from the shelter rather than from a breeder. I think it takes some time to find just what you want, if you have something specific in mind, at the pound, but eventually you probably can. I know a family who wanted a certain size, and they said it took them about 5 months of going to the pound a couple times a week to finally find it. The only criteria they had was size. The pound where I live will call you if you put your name down for a certain breed if one comes in, but they won't call you if you're just looking for a certain size, etc. So, around here, it seems it would be easier to find the purebred that you want in the shelter rather than the mix breed you want. The pound will, at least, help you out by calling you when a certain purebred comes in if you're on the list for that breed. They also list only a sample of what they have on-line, so you have to drive over to see all their dogs.
The pound that I got my dog from is in another town about an hour away. Their website lists all their animals up for adoption. They're a much smaller pound and don't have as many animals, but you can easily see what they have at any given time, both purebred and mixed. And they get ALOT of purebreds in there.

Hey Pitbulliest, long time no see! :D

Hypoallergenic is such a misleading term, considering there is more than one allergen associated with dogs. Some people are allergic to the hair, some to the dander (skin flakes) and some to the saliva. Most people don't bother to find out just how specific their allergy is, and instead run to the petstore for a Bichapoo, Cockapoo, Labradoodle, Cavapoo...and find out a few weeks later that they are still allergic. The doodle may not have the non-shedding quality they were looking for, which is quite common, or they may have one of the other allergies. Either way, that dog now finds itself residing in a lovely 2x3 metal box at the local pound, hoping desperately that someone will fall in love with it for being a dog and not some 'allergy-free' marketing scheme.

i've been on a misison for awhile now to find out why people are breeding "doodle" mixes. here's what i found out -- poodles are hypoallergenic and not everyone wants a poodle, but may be allergic, so they breed poodle to X dog and create "hypoallergenic" dogs for allergy sufferers. 1. this is only proven if the dogs are tested and proven to be hypoallergenic. 90% of puppies born are NOT hypoallergenic, therefore they've just added to the mass overpopulation of mutts.
doodles combine characteristics and temperments of 2 different breeds (child friendly vs large). 1. yes, they combine, but not necessarily for the betterment. you still end up with a mutt and you have no guarantee as to how it's temperment/characteristics will turn out when you breed the 2 together. 2. health purposes - breeding out health problems? no. i don't think so. you breed out health problems by getting checks done (OFA, CERF, etc) and breeding the two best dogs of ONE breed to make a breed stronger.

i've emailed numerous newspapers across the country. i've also contacted various breeders in canada, australia and the u.k. asking them why they are mixing two purebreeds and creating a mutt. 1. hypoallergenic (not always) 2. combining the best of two dogs (not good either) 3. these dogs are the next new breed(s) and will be recognized as purebred whenever they have X amount of generations proving they are hypoallergenic, healthier, etc. (the only way these dogs are currently recognized is through a mixed breed organization and the CKC...CKC recognizes them as "non purebred dogs" and both parents have to be registered purebreds to get these papers. these papers, however, do not make them a new breed...it just identifies lineage and that their mutts)

i've emailed UKC, CKC, AKC, so called "breeders", humane societies in u.s., england and australia.....i've even sent a message to the VP of the USA. no one seems to care that these people are ruining good breeds and creating an abundance of mutts that cost craploads of $$$$$$$.
any other ideas on what can be done???

btw, most of these doodle breeders are trying to convince people the dogs are hypoallergenic (but haven't been tested) and that you can register these dogs.........

I've found that alot of people just think they're darn cute. not saying I like the idea, I don't.........but if there is a market, then there is going to be a dog. that simple. sad........but just that simple.

(doodle folks...they ARE darn cute...not bashing your puppy) :)

OK there is NOTHING WRONG WITH MUTTS! I'm not saying thats it's okay to breed them on purpose, but if anyone thinks there is something wrong with mutts needs to actually own one or know one!

Man, this thread was dead for a month. Here it goes again!

No one said there was anything wrong with mutts. Check out the other doodle threads and you'll see what everyone is talking about.

Blah-blah-blah  .

If you read the thread no one is against mutts, just the fact that people are breeding them when there are millions in the shelter. GET A GRIP!!!
