I hate designer names. Someone put a couple of them into our computer system at work (teddybear for one) and I'm in the process of changing them to bichon/shih tzu.

On a sad but funny note, I got a call on Friday about a dog in a dire situation which I won't share here. When I asked what the dog's breed was and how much it weighed, she said "well it's half chihuahua, half pit bull.

That night, my husband started calling it a chi-a-pit and I thought it was pretty hilarious.

"weiner-beagle" is what one of the ladies who volunteers at the local shelter recently dubbed my foster dog ;)

I dislike them because they acknowledge the mix as a breed and many people are actually duped into believing it IS a breed and go to breeders for them instead of a shelter because they want a purebred Goldendoodle  . I think if a new breed is to be made it should have a unique name, not just a mesh of the breeds used to create the new breed. The names feed the fad IMO.

the thing that kills me is how SERIOUS people take the designer dogs name...

I actually had a lady correct me the other day. I called her puppy a boxer/lab mix and she said, "Oh, no. He's a boxador."

I hate cutesy names !You rarely see them in large breeds !
yes you do... people mix your beloved large breeds also.

Really? Because most the designer dogs I meet around here are large breeds.
agreed.

My parents have poodles, I have yorkies and we always joke that we are going to make porkies. :p (I know they call them yorkie-poos but isnt porkie much better, :rofl1: )

And dont worry only one is not fixed so there arent REALLY going to be any porkies :)

Not all mixed breeds are "high dollar designer breeds". Some are just "mutts". Our dog is a mix of border collie and lab, and we adopted her from the SPCA, I'm quite certain no one intended on her mom and dad getting together!! We call her a laboradollie.
Haha that's actually a recognised mixed breed, but they're called Boradors. I'd never refer to Bertie as one though, he's just a wee mutt...a handsome mutt.

Recognized by who? Poor saps who get suckered out of decent cash for a byb mutt?

ACHC = American Canine Hybrid Club
DDKC = Designer Dogs Kennel Club
DRA = Dog Registry of America, Inc.

I got that off some site, haven't a clue if they're legit clubs or not since i'm not American. I wouldn't pay a lot of money for a cross breed, actually I wouldn't pay for any dog since there are so many in shelters that need homes. Also people who pay through the nose for x-breed puppies like "labradoodles" deserve to be fleeced.

No they are not legit (am not in the US either)

But people don't deserve to be fleeced, and those poor dogs don't deserve to be bred by byb to get high dollars (and minus health tests, contracts and any accountability)

Ultimately having these cutesy names hurts dogs.

When I has Moose back when I was with my ex, I called him a Shepher-collie retriever. Cuz I was pretty sure he was like gsd, collie, and lab.

I just passed a car this evening with a sticker in its rear window that said "got shorkie tzu? LOL, apparently they were very proud.

Like others, I only like the intentionally funny names for mutts. The "designer" mixes just irritate the heck out of me.

I like Siborgis... the cyborgs of the dog world.

They are most noted for their bottomless bionic stomachs, incredible laziness, and their knack for warming the heads of unexpecting nappers.

They also shoot laserbeams from their blue eye! :D
