I wanted to start a thread to share pictures/updates of my new foster dog. Properly named, "Trooper" was pulled by me for local rescue from our county kill shelter Friday morning. He was brought in as a stray, found with many wounds on his body. He was not friendly when found, and rightly so... The vet on call checked him out and said she thought he looked like he had been hit by a car. Antibiotics and pain medication and he sat for over a week before I stepped up to pull him, as he was on the urgent list needing rescue.

Thought to be 7 years old by the vet at the shelter, our vets think he's more like five... and instead of being hit by a car, they are thinking chemical burn. The vet said his wounds look like burn victims she's seen, but worse. She suspects if he had been hit by a car hard enough to send him flying and to get all of these wounds, he would have broken bones and more lacerations. It looks much more like something was poured on him, unfortunately. :(

If he had come into the clinic right after receiving these wounds, she said she would have rushed him into surgery. Unfortunately, he was left to suffer and they started healing, so she is taking a "wait and see" approach to hope he can heal on his own. We have three vet visits a week scheduled to make sure his "burns" as we are calling them, are healing properly. He's on three different pills, a liquid antibiotic, and a topical ointment 2x a day. She said he will get worse before he gets better. We went for a long walk Friday evening, a short walk Saturday morning, and Saturday night he was not interested in eating. Many of his wounds have opened up and the skin is dying and falling off along with a lot of his hair. He honestly looks a bit like a zombie dog.

All that said, he is a SUPER sweet, obese little fellow with a heart of gold. I cannot imagine what he's been through or being so trusting after it, but I am glad that he was trusting enough that we could give him a chance. He's not housetrained whatsoever, but we can worry about that later.

Onward to the pictures! There will be graphic pictures, I would advise you not to look if you're squeamish. I'm taking pictures of his wounds daily to keep track of how they're progressing.

Right after we met, at animal control.

All he wanted was belly rubs...

His healing skin is very "jerky like" we call it.

He got a cute little collar and loved his walk.

He's got a darling little weasel face.

And these are his wounds this evening, day two with him.

You can see higher on his back, where all of that dead skin has fallen off and it is now fleshy and pink, healing and will hopefully scar up quickly.

Back in his "top bunk" above Patton's crate, ready for bed. Wish I could let him sleep with me, but... the skin and hair falls off so easily, that would be a gross mess.

As for whomever/whatever did this to him or left him like this... well, we all know there's a special place for them. Hopefully karma will do its job.

Ouch. Poor bubby. :( That just makes me hurt. I hope he heals up as quickly and easily as can be expected. Bless you for taking him in...I can't even imagine him sitting for a week like that.

This is a picture from this morning. He was much more happy to eat and take his meds, no accidents in the house, still loving the attention that the cats give him. XD A lot of his dying skin has started softening and pulling off, leaving a scar tissue layer underneath of very fleshy skin. I was able to cut a lot of the "jerky skin" away on the other side of him, and there are more wounds opening up on his back here, now. Lots of topical is helping, I think? I trimmed his hair back a bit too, so that I could see to get meds on them and track progress. It is hard to tell what skin is attached and isn't. :/

I'm surprised at how fast it's all changing. It looks very gross, but like it's healing finally, and the vet did say it would be worse before better. We have another appointment tomorrow afternoon for a check up and more meds. He weighs 11 pounds, btw. Would like to see him down to 9/10 ultimately, but I am feeding him just about anything he'll eat right now. He's also cryptorchid, but at least he's HW neg? :p

Awww, what an unlucky life he's had so far! You are doing an amazing thing by helping him. Many people wouldn't be able to handle what you're doing.

Honestly, this is the worst dog I have ever fostered, medically. I had the mange pup Bennett who couldn't walk for weeks without being cut on GRASS and bleeding everywhere, had scabs all over his body, etc.

And I've cared for plenty of dogs with wounds at work, broken jaws, bites, deep cuts, etc.

But sometimes when I'm cleaning this one up it is hard not to puke. Thankfully I don't have a sensitive stomach, but my roommate can't look at his wounds without getting sick. It is unbelievable how extensive they are and unimaginable that someone could actually do this to him. To any dog.

He's just... so sweet. If you stop petting him he comes nudging your hands to pet him some more (so of course we don't deny him!) and even though you can tell he's uneasy/uncomfortable, he LOVES rolling over for belly rubs. He's quite in the crate when he's in there, loves treats, and even stuck his head in the bag I had of wellness pure bites this morning while cleaning him up for a snack! He walks great on leash, and while he *will* go to the bathroom inside, his signs are easy that he has to go and he will go outside just as quick, so housetraining is happening very easily even though I wasn't concerned with it.

Really shows you the trust and power dogs have to keep fighting.

Poor baby!

Reminds me of caring for Zooey after her attack.

Once the raw skin has healed bio oil worked amazing for Zooeys scars and hair growth.

She loved a warm bath when she started to get itchy too!

Trooper's doing very well still this morning. Not much change in the skin department, but the vet will surely see a huge change and let us know if it's going in the right direction, which it appears to be going, to me anyway. More meds coming this afternoon as well.

Saw him get actually excited for the first time last night, I had a friend over and he saw him walking up the stairs out the window onto our porch and got very spunky and ran to the door to greet him, SILENTLY, which was nice for a Chihuahua! If he can keep up this quiet thing, everyone will be fawning over him once he's available for adoption. XD

It is sad, but it really does make you ill. Looking under his skin and the oozings... just. EW. I feel sick FOR him when I'm cleaning him up. :(

Is bio oil a brand name or...? Sorry, I've never heard of it but thank you for the recommendation! I am picking up colloidal silver gel for him once we're done with this topical as well! Good to know about the baths... I can't wait until he can have one. He's a little stinky and gooey. :p

Awh! I'm really surprised that he's not pitiful at all! I was definitely expecting it from him... outside especially, he's like "I don't care if this bush is going to poke my wounds, I AM going to run into it and lift my leg EVERYWHERE" XD

Forgive me for sounding rude, but what happened to Duke, Frag, and Sir?
Just rescuing a dog doesn't make you a hero, it's that happens afterward that really counts.
I'm not really sure what you're trying to say? You are definitely being rude. I'm not calling myself a hero - anyone could have pulled him from Animal Control. All the rescues knew he was there... I just happened to be the one to do it because I knew I had the knowledge medically to help. I just pulled another dog to make more room at AC. I don't expect praise or anything, I am just happy that he did not have to suffer that pain for NOTHING - to be euthanized in the end. Afterwards? He'll get healthy and adopted... Just like Billy and Bennett both did after coming in with medical issues. I didn't rescue him, I pulled him to get him better and place him.

Duke was a foster dog euthanized years ago and Frag and Sir are still alive and well... not sure what you're going for here?

Wtf?

I have my reasons for being skeptical, because Kalamazoo animal rescue pulled that dog. She would have never seen him otherwise as he was in quarantine and only volunteers at KCAS are allowed in there. KAR has money and pulls medical needy all the time.

I am also skeptical at the fact that dogs seem to disappear (most recently, frag and sir) when new dogs and puppies hit the scene.

Forgive my rudeness but the skeptic in me was compelling.

I hate to break it to you, but you're getting your information from the wrong sources. Yes, you have the rescue name correct. And? I am a volunteer for them and had permission to pull him because he was urgent and I wanted to foster him. I walked in there, paid the pull fee and took him out of his cage, all on my own. You don't know how AS here is set up, but you can most certainly see the quarantine/puppy (it's all the same room) room from the floor. Anyone can see those dogs, and I have pulled dogs from the same room before. Remember my foster Bogey? Same situation.

Frag is still with me, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. Sir has been living with my ex (whom I still see) since before Patton was even an idea in my mind, and I still see him. Who else has disappeared? You mentioned Duke - the foster that was decided to be euthanized BY THE RESCUE, not me.

There is no skeptic in you, there are people in a group you are a part of that don't even LIKE you, using you to pick at me, but you have your facts wrong. Are you trying to say this dog isn't in my possession? Even if I was dumping my dogs for new puppies all the time, this isn't my dog, not planning on keeping him, I have fosters all the time. Why are you skeptical about this one?
