Headed to the vet next week for Brisbane's ongoing pad issues. Despite avoidance of hot surfaces, liberal application of TuffnUp, and many weeks spent healing, his pads still peel and bleed from minimal activity on anything rougher than soft dirt. I can't work on toughening his feet up if they bleed after crossing the street, and it only seems to be getting worse. This can't be normal.

I'd make him live in shoes if I didn't think it would make him suicidal.

It was interesting what Southpaw said about the thyroid medication. I have had Susie (my Bernese cross) into the Vet a few years ago and had her thyroid checked and they said it was fine. I have fought to keep the weight off her ever since and she is eleven now. I had to take her into the Vet, a different place, as she hurt her leg and I mentioned about the thyroid test. She did a blood test on her, just at her place. What she said was that it was just verging on being a little low but what might be just a little low on some dogs, could mean it was really low on another. She is now on the thyroid medication so it will be interesting to see if it helps at all. The other Vet I went to would not even try any medication.

Why is it, with dog people, "breeder folk" are allowed to be passive aggressive towards rescues, but "rescue folk" aren't allowed to be passive aggressive towards breeders.

If someone says, "well, I wouldn't get a dog from a rescue because I don't want to deal with someone elses problems" everyone claps and hallelujahs.

But if someone says "well, I wouldn't get a dog from a breeder because I prefer to save a life" then everyone tells them to get off their high horse and stop being snobby.

Wut?

I have a rescue, my next dog is going to be from a breeder. I love both, and don't think one is better than the other. It is just super annoying.
I don't think think those are really equivalent sentences. Change it just a bit:

If someone says, "well, I wouldn't get a dog from a rescue because I don't want to deal with someone elses problems, but you can do that if you'd like.

"Well, I wouldn't get a dog from a breeder because I prefer to save a life, but you can kill shelter dogs if you want"

Hope it helps her! I do have to think that the reference ranges, for anything, are not some perfect thing that every animal fits into... so like you said, what might be fine for one dog, might be having an impact on another.
I know my vets think I'm off my rocker, but I really just think my dog has a problem :dunno: Not awful enough that I want to go to a dermatologist like was suggested once, but obviously hair loss isn't normal so... yeah, would like to somehow address it. :p

Had a bad day at work yesterday due to multiple stupid people who should never be allowed near an animal ever (including a severe abuse/neglect case with an owner who didn't understand what we were so upset about - because an emaciated 8 year old dog that is has no muscle or fat on him at all, not due to a medical issue, but because you don't think your kid is FEEDING the dog is perfectly normal and acceptable behavior), so when I got home last night I jumped online with some friends and had as bit to drink. When I woke up this morning I realized that before I went to sleep last night I had forgotten to close my back porch door. Had a momentary jolt of panic thinking that someone may have opened it, not that I forgot to shut it, but then realized that if anyone had even tried to get near the door I would have heard about it 10x over thanks to a certain brown dog.

Which made me very thankful I have said certain brown dog.

In my desperate attempts to find an activity that Rigby enjoys (aside from running around with a toy in her mouth and beating other dogs with it), we tried a sport scent detection workshop yesterday.

Once she figured out what was going on, she did pretty well. Not as direct as the beagles of course, but she was so methodical by the end it was really neat to see. I'm not sure if it's something I'm going to pursue or not, but it was good to see her trying something new.

Herding is next on the list once the weather improves!

I have taken you outside 4 times since 7 am. Last out last night was midnight, which you did not go potty. Either you made a mess in the middle of the night and I havent found it or you are being stubborn. Poop dammit. Dont dig in the dirt. Dont chew on the tree, the fence, your ball. Just poop. Then you can do all those things or come inside and play While I try to sleep in like hubby gets to do every freaking time on his days off. Or on sundays. I am tired of running on 6 hours of sleep Or less. Just poop.

(For the record - on Saturdays, hubby gets up early and takes her out but I cant sleep)

Foster puppy Darla just got returned after almost two weeks. Her adopter had an abrupt change of work schedule that would mean her home alone for long hours most of the week, and they didn't want to do that to a puppy. It was obviously a tough decision, there were tears when I picked her up.

That's awesome!!! Congrats!
:) Thanks! She hates obedience so I'm happy she decided to participate!

Last trial before this one she would have Q'd. She did all the heel work. She just did it 8 feet behind me. Apparently a laggy pissy whippet doesn't count as part of 'working as a team'.
