Someone tried to give me an adorable puppy today. I said no.

Is adult.

Also met the coolest GSD today. I wanted her. Gorgeous dog. Gorgeous movement and build and crazy fast.

Gah, someone a coworker offered me a free female Chocolate lab puppy a few weeks back (a friend of her's was going to take them to the shelter) and she had an AWESOME personality. It was the day Michael was set to deploy. I said know. I'm kind of kicking myself that I did. But, oh well. Is adult, too. *sigh*

Got a third foster puppy from the wirehaired-something-kinda-pit-ish litter. She's the...special...puppy. Acts like she just got pulled from a big scary municipal shelter even though I know for a fact that she's been in rescue for five of her six months. Has been working with her trainer foster mom on leash walking the whole damned time, doesn't walk on a leash. She's a really bizarre combination of terrified of everything and totally chill. "This hardwood floor is too scary to walk on, better lay down and take a nap instead."

The whole litter was found as strays at four weeks and went straight to foster. This one has had serious resource guarding issues since they were picked up. Might be only with her littermates, seriously weird puppy.

This must be why heelers are so popular. The cuteness is like a defense mechanism. Who would ever be mad at that?
All the heeler people I know say they are officially the Worst. Puppies. Ever. Even people who have raised/bred/trained plenty of non-heelers.

She's probably a seriously anxious puppy. I think it's likely she's completely shutting down when she does stuff like lie down on the scary floor, not chill. :(

She's definitely anxious, I just find it interesting that she naps so readily when clearly overwhelmed. I don't normally think of those as going together.

It is strange, but yes some dogs do fall asleep in extremely anxious situations as a form of shutting down. We see it sometimes in daycamp, usually with the little dogs.

Totally ... it keeps you from killing them (something that you want to do often, and for the duration of their lifetime, in many instances).

I am constantly shocked at how GOOD of a puppy Lincoln is, like ... sure he is a puppy and he chews on things he shouldnt, he does a lot of the normal annoying puppy things, but there is no "malicious intent" (yes, yes I know I am anthropomorphizing a little ... but I swear it seems like they do) like there is with ACDs. Like when he does something bad and I tell him "no" or to stop, he is like instantly sorry and usually never does it again. With ACDs its like sure they stop ... until they think you arent watching :/

Oh God. I just took Fable to the dog park, and she did SO GOOD! In the beginning I was thinking she would never be able to go, so it's hard to express how happy I am.

About a month ago, I started taking her the park with an off-leash dog area (not fenced in), but I kept her on leash and did a bunch of treating. She didn't do too well at first, but after a while she started trying to play with the dogs. Since then, I've been taking her in short stretches, but always asked her to stay close to me and I didn't let her get too worked up. Today I just let her go all out, and she did amazing. She came back every time I called, and while she got a little rough, she didn't go all crazy on any other dogs. I'm so proud of my girl. :D

Brisbane was housebroken almost immediately, didn't chew anything but his toys, and destroyed nothing except for an extremely rare clarinet antique clarinet nouthpiece that I've spent 9.5 years now trying to replace. He was a terrible puppy because he teethed for months on end and was either biting something or asleep for the entirety of his puppyhood.

Hugo does this cute thing where he pounces about in tall grass and looks like a weird gazelle thing. I always joke that he's seeing things because he'll pounce at what seems like nothing. He did it yesterday and came trotting out proudly with a big mouse, lol. He was SO sad that I wouldn't let him eat it, but I was so proud that he listened when I told him to drop it!

Not used to not having a confident dog in my house. Ezra went to my sister, there's a new girl with me. She's completely insecure. Such a sweetheart, from a good home, but doesn't have the confidence to act on her own. I'm so used to Mimi doing what she wants because she freaking can, I really need to back up 10 steps with this new girl.

I had a customer today tell me about how they adopted their puppy from a local puppy rescue. The puppy was neutered when they got him, and they were told he was 8 weeks. They took him to the vet and the vet said that he thought the puppy was closer to 5 weeks. !!!

The woman went back and asked the rescue about it and was told that whatever puppies they bring up from down south, they call 8 weeks so they can adopt them out, neuter them and move 'em out. Holy ****.

They also "don't keep" puppies past 4 months old. What happens to them? Who knows.

This is a REALLY popular rescue in the area, too. God.

I started the dogs on turmeric "Golden Paste" over the weekend, because everything seems to say it's a magical fix all for everything.

After 3 days it's great, everyone's coats are softer and shinier, Rigby's not limping anymore, and Oz's back seems to be improving.
But the SMELL. All the dogs have this faint scent of cat pee, and apparently that's a normal side effect of this stuff. Ick.

Well, that's awesome. And when those puppies start breaking with parvo and other diseases, there will be another state that refuses animals brought up. Our rescue already can not use Mass or CT.

I would encourage the new owner to report the shelter. If you can't sell a puppy before 8 weeks, tossing it in a van for 10-12 hours straight and handing it off to new people doesn't seem wise either.
