Crates are awesome! Crates definitely helped me potty train both Fozzie & Gonzo (and there was very few accidents, ever). They're awesome for dog sports. They're awesome for classes. They're awesome for traveling/hotels/camping. They're awesome for feeding Raw bones indoors. They're a beloved place for both of my boys to hang out & nap (with the doors open). They're awesome for keeping dogs out of trouble when not supervised.
I don't see crates as a form of confinement or copping out on looking after your dog or anything like that, at all! As long as they're used properly (and not over-used), crates are practically an essential tool in responsibly owning a dog. Stating that "they didn't have crates back in my day..." is totally irrelevant. You could say that about countless pet products that are very useful in this day & age, you could even say that about spaying & neutering! Times change, and so do people's lifestyles. I would much rather some one responsibly crate their dog when they have to leave for a few hours... rather than giving that dog free roam of the house or yard and ending up with a destroyed house, or a sick dog, or a lost dog.
Not only is the crate very safe as far as traveling & staying out of trouble, it's an awesome place for your dog to relax. Gonzo & Fozzie know that each of their crate's is their own, and they leave each other alone when one of them is in their crate.
