No, my vet wants to remove both. I didn't know you could remove only one.

Thank you for your advice guys.

Jennifer,

When Armani went for his first checkup at 10 weeks, my vet couldnt even feel his second testicle... it dropped around 4 months or so with no problem.

Give it a little bit of time before you get too worried.:)

^Yep PM, that is what I said too...........Orson's first check up went the same at 12 weeks, but the next time she checked at around 5 months BOOM, there it was, LOL

I didn't pay much attention to when because he was bound for neutering one day any way :)

It's better than Beau, lmao. Every time we take Beau to the vet for a checkup they comment on how er... well endowed he is. ;)

Only one of Fozzie's had dropped at Blaze's age... but by the time he was neutered, both of them dropped. Hopefully it will be the same with your little guy!

Blaze's undescended testicle will be in my thoughts. Teehee. ; D

Bandit's was playing hide and go seek for awhile. One hadn't fully dropped. They are both there now as happy as can be.

My JRT Toby had only one at 6 months. Somewhere just before a year the other one showed up. The vet I used at the time swore up and down the other one wouldn't show up and that he needed to be neutered NOW. I said I didn't want to do him till a year anyway. And volia there they both were. (But by then I had a new vet anyway)

The operation to remove a "crypt orchid" is no big deal. A non decended testicle is normally a big fault alot of breeds

I wouldn't buy from a breeder breeding monorchid dogs, and sure wouldn't breed a dog myself that was monorchid. But that's just me. I don't like passing on genetic defects.
I agree. It's a huge fault in pretty much every breed standard I've read.. And though it's apparently a genetic trait from both sides.. Seems anyone I've known with a chryptorchid dog, has had a chryptorchid sire. But none of them knew well enough that that was a pretty big no-no. Thankfully everyone neutered and quit passing it along.

Same here, I've never known a reputable breeder to breed a dog with only one descended testicle simply because of it being a genetic thing. Personally if it were my dog I would hold off on doing anything till the dog is at least 2 years old. If the testicle still hasnt dropped I would neuter ASAP. If it has, then all is good :) To me it wouldnt matter how good the dog is, such a common genetic defect is not worth it.

I've got to agree, with everyone. Breeding monorchids is a strict no-no in just about every breed I know of, no matter what they're breeding for.

My Petie had both testis at 10 wks, then one moved, we could see it.
In the the JRTCA/JRTCC/JRTGB, Jrts are registered on their own merit at a year of age, instead of being reg'd just because they have reg'd parents.
One of the faults that doesn't allow us to register is an undecended testis.
And if I wanted to compete especially in any National event, he had to be Reg'd. I waited until he was over year old in hopes that it would move to the right spot, didn't happen. By this time, he already had a very nice career and was winning and winning performance championships right, left and center.
I neutered him, for his health first and foremost, to register him and because it was the ethical thing to do.
This dog has gone to win National Championships, be a proven Working Terrier and to basically excell at anything I have ever asked him to do and he has been my best dog.
And I hope that your breeder, if they sold you a dog as a breeding prospect does the right thing and gives you some of your money back to the price of a pet quality puppy.

I know it's hard, I have been there because we want them to be everything that we had dreamed of but...............but imo it should be as a neutered dog.
There is no question that it isn't an inherited problem from the research done and there is no question that it can't cause health problems by the way of cancer from the reseach done. And we have to do right by the future generations just not our own dog, imo.

Good luck
Lynn

Another question:

If it doesn't show up by 6 months, should I go ahead and remove the testicle that hasn't dropped? Or should I wait a bit longer to see if it drops?

I'd personally wait until at least after a year, but that's just me. I like to keep dogs intact for longer than most people anyways.

If it hadn't dropped after a year, I'd probably go ahead and just neuter. I *might* wait a little longer in a larger breed as toys mature really early comparatively...

ETA: I think Lynn summed up the argument against breeding a dog with an undescended testicle very very well.

That is up to you and your vet ..... I'd give it a year at the very most . If it doesn't descend , it has to be removed . To me if a dog is not show worthy testicle wise , it shouldn't be bred either .
