Would seem like it is a line of retained testicle dogs continuing the genetic defect.
Blaze's sire has been studded out many, many times. It could be that the majority of males produced by him, don't have retainted testicles - hence why they would continue to breed him.

After doing a quick search through the BC clubs of America (of which most were opposed to the AKC and promoted the working BC) the general concensus is the same as all other breed clubs. Ethical breeding practises consist of the removal of hereditary issues to improve the breed. The AKC in the 50's deemed retained testicles a DQ for ALL breeds because of the genetic implications and the health issues that result. Not only does cryptorchidism create a higher risk of cancer it is also specuated to effect behavior.

While the sire of your pup may be a wonder dog, the fact remains that you now have a puppy with a potential genetic health problem. As unfortunate as it is, would you want to pass your fears and disapointment on to another buyer?

Your pup is still young. This may not even be an issue to be worrying about yet. But if this will be a reality for you think long and hard and discuss these issues with other ethical BC breeders before letting your hopes and dreams guide you on such a serious matter.

Retained testicles in dogs involves a number of genes, and literature suggests that unaffected siblings and progeny of monorchid dogs have near the same risk of producing it as the affected dog.

There is a good reason why the vast majority of breeders select away from this trait.

You've gotten some sound advice, here, Jenn, but for now, just enjoy Blaze like you would any wonderful new puppy and go ahead with all your training plans. You're a long way off from having to make any breeding decisions :)

This is a nine week old puppy. Her breeder is a highly ethical, respected breeder, with excellent breeding practices.
I disagree. Breeding a monorchid dog that you removed the undescended testicle (and clearly the puppy purchaser here had no idea that this was even PROBLEM!) is not ethical, in any way shape or form.

Does the rest of the oh so wonderful working border collie world KNOW that she's breeding uni-ballers? Or is it just so accepted now that no one cares?

Or *gasp* is it just that while working people like to paint the show people so evil, but it's the pot calling the kettle black - and they are willing to sacrifice on health if that's what it takes to get a working dog? That it's ok to only have one descended testicle and pass that along time and time again, as long as it can work?

Nope, sorry - I don't buy it. Pot. Kettle. Black.

OMFG! Give it a REST!!!!!!!!

If people want to debate this any more, I think it would be appropriate to start a NEW thread and leave Lizmo the heck alone.

Why, nolu? This thread is precisely about this issue. Why do we need to go to a different thread - because a popular board member is involved and its a cute puppy?

Because she POLITELY asked us all to give it a ****ing rest and if you're a decent human being you'll stop harassing her and make your own thread. Want to try that?

ETA: Yeah, Renee, I really liked the movie. Was it based on a book, do you know?

No, because it IS a serious issue and bears discussing but there is no good reason for us to make this all about one puppy and one person.

Jenn's got a lovely puppy; let's let her enjoy Blaze. She's got plenty of time ahead of her to consider the pros and cons of breeding.

Now, Nolu . . . is that video still so disturbing? ;) I have no idea if it was based on a book or not though. Might be based on an anime series.

Now you know Coop will have to watch it ;)

It was a pretty decent movie though.
I DID click the link, and we did watch that movie when it first came to DVD. I enjoyed it because I like to see movies with stong women that have attitude :D

Plus it was really cool how she could change hair color, clothes color etc........I want to be able to do that :D

NOt just that, but I think there has been all that REALLY needs said on the matter. Lizmo has handled it quite well and responded with a mature attitude.

I am a little lost, clearly I am new to this forum, but I just arrived home and caught up on this thread, I am not sure how debating this issue is harassing Lizmo?? I am very impartial here, not knowing any of you very well and I did not take it that way at all.... I think people are honestly just debating the issue that she brought up, not attacking her at all???? Maybe its just me but I did not take this as about her or Blaze specifically, more about an issue in breeding??

ETA: I was typing as a few others posted ((VERY slow typer.. LOL)) I just want to be clear I am not taking sides here, just that I don't think it IS about one person/ breeder/ puppy and I for one never took it that way if that makes Lizmo feel better:)
