This is such a sad day in Australia....
Steve's wife was trekking in Tasmania and is now on a flight to Darwin. Poor, poor woman, how terribly shocking for her......and her babies.

I feel like I have lost a family member as he was so familiar to all Australians

well you know what they say "play with fire and eventually you will get burned" I feel bad for the guy but with the amount of dangerous stuff he did it was only a matter of time

OMG...that is absolutely awful :(. I loved Steve, he always seemed so upbeat and caring all the time. I always watched his TV shows and honestly, one of my main reasons for ever wanting to go to Australia was to go to his zoo and see him in real life. I can't even begin to imagine what Terri and his two children are going through...:(

I can't believe it..

Oh my gosh! I have a handwritten letter from him. I wrote to him when I was like 12, and told him how much I loved his zoo, and all his shows and just how cool I thought he was. I got a letter back, handwritten with TWO free passes to his zoo "if I could ever get to Australia"...

Oh, I think I might cry. :(

You are right of course. And it happened while filming. I can imagine him trying for a better angle and that happening....... Still what a horrible way to go and the shock for his poor wife not knowing till after the media leaked it.

Awww that is sweet. He has done a lot for conservation of wildlife. Love him or hate him he has left his mark on animal conservation.

I think I will definatly go to austrailia now to see the zoo...I always told myself, "no, I've my whole life to visit that zoo, no need to do it know"

I guess the saying "you don't know what you got till it's gone" is really true...

If this is true, he was obviously out of his element. Stingrays, even tank raised ones, are dangerous and lethal.

To err on the side of caution, may God help his wife and children through this.

Max emailed me this and I got angry because I thought it was a joke.

I have been in tears all day. I think that Steve Irwin is one of the things that made it great to be Australian. I don't think there was anyone like him in the world - his enthusiasm knew no boundaries, his love for his work and the animals he lived with was beyond anything I'd seen in anyone before.

The only consolation in this tragedy is that he died doing what he loved.

He was a one-of-a-kind and he will be sadly, sadly missed for a very long time to come.

I have tried to log on to his site to send a personal message of sympathy to his family, and you just can't get on it, there must be so many people visiting. A fitting tribute to a great man.

RIP Steve you bloody legend, Australia and the world misses you.

I just read this too, and I'm shocked. I enjoyed watching his shows. He changed how wildlife documentaries were presented and he spawned all those imitators, non of whom came close to him. He seemed like a regular guy, one you could hang out and have a beer with.
