Oh hey, that's good to hear. I just remember someone somewhere likening it to Game of Thrones meets historic romance or something, and while it was decided that it's not QUITE Game of Thrones-y, I figured there must have been some sense of grittiness and action to warrant that kind of initial comparison. Might have actually seen that discussion regarding Outlander here on Chaz. From the pilot it just seemed to be narration and sex, and then more narration, and more sex. Which, okay, is how a lot of people see Game of Thrones too but generally I like seeing more things happening.

Books for me, on the other hand, can have very little action and even dialogue as long as the writing is good and the characters likable. Even if I don't end up liking the show, I can see myself enjoying the book. Especially since you've said that you don't really agree with the synopsis, because I had the same thought when I first read it lol Still thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt, so it's good to hear that it isn't just 100% fluff and mush.

I'll continue downloading the rest of the episodes and see how I feel about it. The acting is great and everything, I just wasn't sure what direction the story was going in.
Yeah, honestly, I don't even really enjoy the initial 1940s part in the book either, LOL. But it's kind of necessary. The nice thing about the show is that they have decided to really give a lot of time to everything (since they have 16 episodes) but especially the first episode kind of drags a bit because the do allow it a lot of time.

The comparison to GOT is perhaps a bit misleading, mostly seeing as Outlander is a very personal story, told entirely from Claire's POV (for the first book/season, anyway), whereas GOT immediately introduces a huge world and tons of characters. It's not as immediate with the action and adventure, but it definitely gets there!

Anyway yeah, I'd say give it a few more episodes at least (maybe at least until 6 if you can!) and see how you feel :)

Honestly it often takes me most of a first season to even get hooked by shows!

(I'm a pusher).

That was how I felt the entire first season. It was obviously good and well made and the acting was fantastic and the characters badass... but things just didn't really get that interesting until Season 2. I really liked Season 2. And hah yeah, the language transitions are really weird. Still couldn't really get used to that, but I can forgive it!

Also! Did you get to finish Orphan Black?? :D
Cool I will totally keep watching! I can see a lot of potential that's for sure, and even now it's totally entertaining.

I did start season 2 of Orphan Black but then got sidetracked with Vikings, for some reason I wasn't totally feeling it, but I will definitely finish it at some point, probably when I'm done with Vikings.

I geek out over way too many shows...But the top ones have to be....

Supernatural- I have been watching loyally since the first season premiered. I used to watch alone until about season 3 and then the rest of my family really got into it. Now when ever I visit my brother and there are have been new episodes we HAVE to discuss it.

The Walking Dead- I was a HUGE fan of the comic series previous to the tv series. My brother had introduced it to me. As he has so many awesome things. I more than love the tv series. It is pretty safe to say I am obsessed lol.

Game Of Thrones

Misfits (seasons 1-3)- Not a huge fan of the current cast/storyline. But I LOVE the first three seasons and can rewatch them over and over.

The 100

Orphan Black

I'm way late to the party but... SHERLOCK!
Welcome! :D

I am still working on Doctor Who. There are episodes I really love, and episodes that are so stupid (to me, obviously) that I just wander out of the room while they play. Both the Daleks and the Cybermen are so aversive just to my hearing that I can't stand episodes with them. I guess the highs are worth the lows, because I'm still watching. At least until the new seasons of stuff I want to watch show up on Netflix....

I am, however, very excited for the killer don't-blink angel episode, which is up next for me. I specifically have saved it for just before bed when it is dark. I want to be creeped out.

I really loved Torchwood so much more, though. I get through an episode or two of DW, then go back and watch an episode of Torchwood.

Yes. Watch it. Waaatch it. I think Netflix describes it as a "droll comedy", which is fairly accurate, but there is such a wide variety of characters and humor that it really is enjoyable in so many ways. And again, warning, Season 1 sucked for me and I just didn't really like it (or any of the characters). Once I started Season 2, I was hooked - and luckily Season 1 only lasts about 6 episodes.

If you don't enjoy comedy in general though, I can't quite guarantee you'll love it. Like I said, some of it can be really corny and the humor can get awfully predictable, but for me it's still consistently funny. I do enjoy comedy personally (though am very critical of it) so that could be why I like it. The characters are gold, though.
It's not necessarily that I don't enjoy comedy, it's just... not my top genre for TV shows. I love comedy movies. I used to love the sitcom type shows like Everybody Loves Raymond, Fresh Prince, etc, but haven't gotten into many newer comedies. Although I do like 30 Rock from what I've seen so I think I could get into Parks & Rec too possibly. It's just... something about most comedy shows doesn't keep me dying or really wanting to see the next episode, at least not yet. I have to be in the right mood I guess. lol.

Me too!!! What a great show. Season 1 I LOVED, Season 2 I still have not finished because I just didn't enjoy it (my sister loved it), and Season 3 was very promising, overall great, but got weird in some parts. A variety of weird, and yeah, weird even for AHS. But overall still good. So looking forward to Season 4! Usually if it's an interesting idea I can really get behind it, and I think that's why I found Season 2 boring.
I trudged through season 2 and found most of it pretty boring and uneventful but the last 3 eps or so I remember made up for it. I ended up really liking the ending! My sis still says season 2 was her favorite too though. Hmph, different tastes. AHS is one of the only 'dramas' she watches, too, btw, like I said she's mostly into comedy.

I don't mind weird at all, so I'll probably like season 3. lol.

Haha, I don't mind that you don't give up! Totally appreciate it actually, because I still want to like this show. I LIKE being obsessed with shows so I'm actually really, really bummed that I'm not into it yet. That's why I've tried to watch it so many times, too. I might give it another try starting from Season 1 this week or the next, and if I'm still kind of "eh" I'll try Crawl Space.

I think the reason why I'm not really into it is because I don't really feel any interest in the characters. Usually what gets to me is 1) a fast start and instant intrigue or 2) attractive people. Couldn't find either in Season 1  But I'm determined not to be shallow so I'll keep trying!
LOL, I hear ya. I think I really liked the characters from the start because I was very sympathetic towards Walt in the beginning. I really felt bad for the dude and just kind of felt his... unhappiness and then getting the lung cancer diagnosis was just the last straw. And then Jesse just made me laugh. but I didn't find any of them particularly attractive for sure, but it didn't seem to bother me in this show.

I just re-watched quite a bit of it when my grandpa because he's sick and had never seen it. He is OBSESSED too, lol, my 73yr old grandpa. He just keeps going on and on about the good acting. He appreciates stuff like that like I do.

But as I re-watched, I could definitely see how the first season was a bit slower to get going. By the end of episode 7 though (last ep of season 1), I was RE-hooked, LOL... because you forget a lot of small things. And then I was reminded of it's greatness and how much I seriously loved that show.

Anyway, I just finished the entire House series and really really enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I actually had skipped a lot of the first season of that show and started watching a few of what I googled were the 'best episodes' to see if I wanted to keep going -- I'm sooo glad I did. The first season lost me a bit, until I went back and watched them AFTER I finished the rest of the series and then I appreciated them so much more. lol. I did this with Shameless too by accident ... a few eps from this recent season 4 were on Showtime and I ended up getting super hooked and watched like 4 eps from season 4. And then I decided I liked it so much I wanted to go back to the beginning and start from there lol.

But I'm going to be searching for my 'next' show now. I have a hard time watching multiple shows at once, lol.

So I'm going to go through this thread again and find one. I still only watched one ep of Game of Thrones and it didn't have that "it" factor for me yet but I REALLY want to give it another chance.

Ooooh someone else who watches the 100! I got totally sucked into it. Good show.

Does anyone watch Under the Dome at all? I actually really like it. I like how it's totally different from the book too, and there's something new every episode.

Anyway, my schedule for this Fall is going to be nuts. 19 shows I want to watch. Looking forward to the Flash, Gotham, Gracepoint, Scorpion, Agent Carter (sort of. I don't know. But I'll watch because it's Marvel). Plus all the old shows obviously.

Will anyone watch the Supernatural spin-off? I don't even know when it's starting, but I found the introduction episode totally lame, and just a copy of the Originals' premise. So I won't...

I tried watching this show when it first aired because Hank, er Dean Norris, lol, was in it, and it was just 'okay' to me however my dad said he's been watching this season and loves it so I think I may give it another shot!

It's hilarious because he was Big Jim before being Hank for me :rofl1:

I started watching Lost Girl. I really like it so far! We have 6 episodes left on BB but with hubby leaving next week we'll probably have a few left then... although not sure I'll wait for him to watch them if there are only 2 or 3 left, lol!

Started Downton Abbey again, think I'm 4 episodes in? It's very good, just not especially interesting. Mostly watching it now because I'm waiting on other shows to download. I've heard really great things though.

BAH! Don't. If you're not into it, you're not into it... but jumping 3 seasons ahead and getting major spoilers just to 'like a show' just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Of course that's coming from someone who knows what happens to the main character in the end because it was ALL OVER FB, and is still watching, but yeah... We finished season 4 yesterday. Hubby's away next week though so I don't know when we'll get to finish it.
Haha, I usually wouldn't recommend it, but I actually AM one of those people who (sometimes) will have to try 3 or 4 times to really like a show. Some of my very favorite shows are ones that I just couldn't get into even after an entire season.

Knowing the spoilers that far out ahead might change my experience, though. Which is why I'll give it another try from the beginning - and if not, then I guess spoilers won't matter if I might not ever watch it otherwise?

Yeah, honestly, I don't even really enjoy the initial 1940s part in the book either, LOL. But it's kind of necessary. The nice thing about the show is that they have decided to really give a lot of time to everything (since they have 16 episodes) but especially the first episode kind of drags a bit because the do allow it a lot of time.

Oh yeah, I definitely don't expect it to turn out anything like Game of Thrones. Just the fact that the two were even compared though, made me think it wasn't just fluffy fluff and narration. I'm downloading episodes 2-6 right now and will probably to continue to watch it as it comes out. Definitely giving it a chance! And like I said, I can be the same way with shows!

Ah, yeah. With Orphan Black I was pretty hooked to begin with, so if it's gotten meh for you, that's probably just how it's going to be. I thought Vikings S01 was great but a bit boring, and don't know if it just took me a long time to get hooked, or if it's because the second season is actually more interesting. Really great show, though, and I'm bummed that I have to wait so long for Season 3!

It's not necessarily that I don't enjoy comedy, it's just... not my top genre for TV shows. I love comedy movies. I used to love the sitcom type shows like Everybody Loves Raymond, Fresh Prince, etc, but haven't gotten into many newer comedies. It's just... something about most comedy shows doesn't keep me dying or really wanting to see the next episode, at least not yet. I have to be in the right mood I guess. lol.
Oh see, I hate shows like Everybody Loves Raymond and Fresh Prince LOL But I also think that's my natural inclination to dislike all "old" shows. Something about the actual image quality, and something about the style. I used to watch HIMYM but I don't talk about it anymore. Looking back, I also hate it :rofl1: I used to enjoy Modern Family but after 3 seasons or so... ehhhh.

I know what you mean about comedy shows and how they're not "OH WOW NEXT EPISODE NOW!" The reason why I like them is because I almost always have to be watching a show/movie while I'm working on something else, so something light and uncomplicated works out really well.

I don't mind weird at all, so I'll probably like season 3. lol.
I might end up going back to AHS Season 2 someday... but for now I'm just really looking forward to the new season! My sister and I generally don't have the same tastes in shows, either, but she's a HUGE horror fan so AHS is right up her alley. She's usually into crime shows (Bones especially), comedy and cartoons (30 Rock, Parks & Rec, Modern Family, Adventure Time, etc.), and some anime (lol nopenopenope). The only shows we both love are AHS, Parks & Rec, and cartoons like Adventure Time and Bob's Burgers. But if it's a show that we both hate, we tend to agree with each other.

LOL, I hear ya. I think I really liked the characters from the start because I was very sympathetic towards Walt in the beginning. I really felt bad for the dude and just kind of felt his... unhappiness and then getting the lung cancer diagnosis was just the last straw. Well, this actually reminds me of something else that bugs me in shows/movies in general... I find it extremely hard to sympathize with characters that are diagnosed with cancer because it usually feels to me like mimicry of something very real. And that makes it very, very obvious for me that these are actors acting in a show regardless of how great the acting is. So if this is a show that lays on the "oh he's got cancer, oh no" too heavily, it's probably not a show that I could appreciate.

That said, if everything else about it is good enough, who knows!

We should make a deal - I watch 10 episodes of BB and you watch 10 episodes of GOT :lol-sign:

I was actually talking to my husband about it, about how it's odd that people got so hooked to Breaking Bad considering how unlikeable the main character is. I do like Jesse though! Probably because I feel bad for him or something. We have 6 episodes left. Might watch 2 tonight, but will probably wait for my husband to come back next week to watch the last few (which is annoying, considering how busy we'll be the following week with all our shows starting again, but we'll live).

Still really liking Lost Girl. Found out two days ago that Star Wars Clone Wars wasn't canceled after season 5 as I thought though, so I've been watching Season 6 for now... but that shouldn't take long.

And Doctor Who... loving the new episodes so far, especially last night's, although the toy soldier thing didn't make sense...

My grandma and all her friends loooveee this show. I felt the same as you, yeah it does LOOK good and great acting, scenery, etc, but I wasn't terribly interested.

Oh see, I hate shows like Everybody Loves Raymond and Fresh Prince LOL But I also think that's my natural inclination to dislike all "old" shows. I think with me it's more of a nostalgic type thing. I usually end up watching Boy Meets World and Full House and Fresh Prince when I'm cleaning or doing stuff around the house, like you said, it's good light background noise that I still 'get into' and pay attention to.

I might end up going back to AHS Season 2 someday... but for now I'm just really looking forward to the new season! Sounds kind of like my stepsister! She loooveess horror movies. They're probably my least favorite genre in general, minus like the REALLY good classic ones.

I don't think it's overly done. Once you get past the first 4 eps or so, it's not really brought up a lot IMO if I recall correctly.

And I can do that deal!! LOL... seriously, I'll start GoT tomorrow! ;)

I am watching Buffy through for the first time. I'd seen episodes here and there before. I figured if I wanted to continue to have my 'nerd card' I should watch Buffy.

So I'm on season 4 of Buffy and season 1 of Angel.

Hmm thoughts... I think it is good. I will start there. I'm probably going to get all the Buffy fanatics jumping on me but I don't think it's quite up to the hype it has yet. I felt the same about Firefly except I actually disliked Firefly the first time I watched it. The second time I got hooked BUT I still don't think it is near the best show on tv ever like people claim. I think I came in to both with the bar set WAY high (like GOT and Avatar high) and got disappointed. In it's own right though it is very good.

With Buffy I think part of my problem is I am coming at it so late and after watching a LOT of 'Buffy inspired' type of WB/CW-esque shows. The first season especially reminded me almost entirely of early Smallville with the weird weekly 'baddies' that were super corny and totally obvious from the first couple scenes. It's gotten better though. I can definitely tell that a ton of those 'teeny supernatural' shows have taken a LOT from Buffy. Buffy tends to do it a lot better in general though.

My BIG problem, and it is a big problem is that I... don't like Angel. At all. I find him tired and boring more than anything. And that I KNOW is coming at Buffy from a post-Twilight/Vampire Diaries/TrueBlood/ETC ETC ETC era. I KNOW at the time Buffy was airing the 'main girl falls in love with the brooding vampire' thing wasn't as much of a 'thing'. But it's just dull to me anyways lol. And as cute as David Boreanaz is, I don't think he's a great actor. I feel like his acting as Angelus especially is really really cheesy. And so I don't find Angelus scary (except that one episode- and you KNOW which that was). I find Angelus cringe-worthy and eye rollingly cheesy...It's kind of disappointing because I had read some people calling the Angelus arc the best part of the show. So the first three seasons focusing so much on Buffy loves Angel was just... eh... I like Angel a bit better now in Angel. I like Buffy a lot better without Angel around too.

But I like all the other characters and LOVE Spike. His post breakup with Druscilla was absolute gold. I about died. I also love Willow, Xander, Giles, and Cordelia. I was actually very sad Cordelia left to go to Angel but not sad Angel left to go to Angel.

Anyways, it's good so far.

Watched season 1, ep 2 of GoT... I definitely like it, great acting, dialogue, cinematography, etc, my main thing right now is that I'm just pretty confused. lol. I don't know who is who, and who is related to who, and wtf they are even fighting for lol. But I'm hoping that will come with time. Overall I like it so far though.

ps - the end was so freaking sad with the wolf dying. :(

I never much got into any of those type of shows.

I tried to watch Charmed, which I felt was on the same lines sort of... and I never got too sucked in. I mainly tried to watch it to see Julian McMahon aka Cole though lol.

Yeah, I remember watching Buffy after watching a bit of True Blood and Vampire Diaries just out of curiosity/boredom, and I don't know. I thought it was cute and likable, but it just felt a bit dated to me, and not just in quality/graphics. Acting, dialogue, plot, tropes, etc. I also think that I had watched that show before really getting into TV shows in general, I would have enjoyed it more. I admittedly only watched one season, though.

I didn't like Firefly, either  I was so prepared for the most amazing TV experience of my life, but did not realize it was sci fi + western, which are two genres I avoid like the plague. I do frequently hear that it's much more than that, so I'll give it another chance eventually, but it wasn't what I expected at all.

Watched season 1, ep 2 of GoT... I definitely like it, great acting, dialogue, cinematography, etc, my main thing right now is that I'm just pretty confused. lol. Woohoo! And haha, yeah I think that anyone who hasn't read and reread the books feels the same way. I know I did! But eventually it started making sense, though I kept noticing new things when I rewatched. Ask if there's anything that you feel is important that you don't quite get!

Had a really busy day today and just got home a bit ago - I'm going to watch some Breaking Bad tonight and tomorrow!

For me Buffy didn't get good until season 2 and 3. It is definitely campy and kind of dated in places. I don't mind though but I have the whole 90s nostalgia going on watching it.

Though I was thinking my top tv shows are still Avatar and Game of Thrones. Such a weird combination! Lol
