IF a person is going to bring up a topic to discuss, they should be able to do so by backing up their statements with facts. TO strike out personal hateful comments only shows lack of skills in debate and lack of maturity. I have yet to read where there is no problem with overpopulation and how is stating the facts about the topic "b*******"?

I soooo agree with you smkie. :)

But they are not a part of the machine chemical dumping society that the rest of us take part in. I don't know the solution, but stating the problem in parts is only to examine what is wrong. IF we don't look at it for what it is how will a solution ever be found? AS to cloth diapers, each time we process clean our water at the water plants we lose water. Gone forever, something no other creature has ever done. WE even destroy one of our most important elements for living.IT isn't a matter of there being one less, there needs to be a slowing down, a responsibility taken. TO bring a child in this world should be the most considered decision ever made, instead of the oops oh boy it is a great deal of the time. I Don't believe that pregnant women should march off to the abortion clinics. I do believe that we need to stop and think and consider what our wants and needs for our happiness are doing to the overall wellfare for everyone and the species that we share our Earth with.

Yep it's all the older generations (going way back) fault really...if they hadn't wanted things to be easier for their kids than they had it..."walking uphill in the snow both ways" so they invented snowmobiles, snowblowers, de icers, buses..."doing laundry by hand.." so they inventd washing machines..."shoveling horse manure..." so they invented cars..."I hate having to walk over, or wait 10 days for aletter, to so and so's and ask them something" so thy invented phones...."slaving all day in the kitchen"...they invented microwaves...

If we're going to blame anyone I say we pick the generation with the most inventions that turned out to be curses and caused so much "laziness". Let's put the blame where it belongs...

Yeah...this whole post is made in jest...just to show how silly the blame game is. People want the world to be a better place for their kids, and always have, and always will...that is what prompted millions of inventions to be made. Some of those caused issues...doesn't mean they are bad people for doing it!

People are having less kids now...and buying more STUFF for those less kids, and THEMSELVES...so perhaps the having less kids thing isn't the great solution some here....seem to think it is? hmm...

Hmm...maybe because people aren't dying enough...let's explore that shall we?

Yeah...that arguement is just as offensive...

smkie....would you think the pop issue would be an issue..if people died earlier and more often? Why address the babies...and not the elderly or infirm? Are they not part of the population? Do they not use up resources and funds, and create waste?Isn't there money spent on keeping them going, that could be better spent on planet saving issues?

Soylent Green here we come!

I think the point is, that the deed is done with people already walking on the earth... and the point about OVER population is valid, not population point blank.

Can't run away from the fact can we?

It's not about not having babies, it's about not having more people on the earth than we can provide for reponsibly.

THere is a difference between what is already here and what has yet to come. WE abuse our elderly as a society so badly for profit in our medical profession that their quality of life isn't even a consideration. I have seen that up close and personal in the work place as well. THat doesn't even make sense to point out...we have the right to make more by displacing the souls already here? IS that really what you are trying to say?

but just because we have all those techy inventions doesn't mean we HAVE to use them. no...you won't stop technology from rolling along. but you can choose to not use the microwave, etc. you can choose to be an advocate for cleaner rivers..and put yourself out there to do something about it. again..you could try walking more. you could do alot of things that you won't simply because you ('you' being a general term) are too spoiled. and then the spoiled generation cries...'oh my...this planet is doomed!' but they say it while unwilling to give up one single luxury of technology. so while they won't give up anything...they cry to stop populating the planet. as if people wanting families are the sole problem. not them...OH NO. they just complain about it all. but are willing to give up nothing. then scoff the people who advocate 'green'....goodness..that is too difficult!

and are we really still sooooooooo intent on bashing Puck for a statement he made...was sorry for (even if the apology didn't live up to your standards. it WAS an apology) or are we discussing the true issue?

again...who out there is canning their own fresh food from the garden? who out there is wearing clothing from their own weave? who out there is burning candles...made by them? who out there is depending on natural wood for warmth instead of the almighty oil? well...I don't weave my own cloth, but I do the others. who out there is seriously driving hybrid? who is looking into solar heat? who is walking EVERY chance they can? now.....tell me about how having a child is killing the planet.........

If having children is selfish, then I'm so glad my mother was selfish, and that her mother was selfish, and so on... and right now, I would give everything to be selfish myself!

there we go...why aren't we focused on those that have used up thier potential then...rather than those who's potential isn't even known? lol ;)

Is overpopulation broken down into economic or race groups by any chance? What economic and race groups, tends to procreate most?

OK... Cool.

I think that it would be easier to spend the resources to provide for the population responsibly, rather than convince people to stop having babies. Or worse than that, have some government REGULATE how many children we can have. China does that, IIRC and it does not seem to be working. I also read somewhere, some time ago, a article that discussed the risk of raising a large population of "only childs".

there is a lot of singular perspective here. I don't think my great grandmother's generation had any idea of what was to come. BLame isn't the focus either. I do believe the topic was ..SHould a woman steriliZe herself to keep from making the world population problem greater. I don't think anyone said anyone should feel bad because they had a baby. I had two. My mama had four, my stepdaughter who home schools and is big in the CHurch had 10. THat isn't the point either. I do not applaud this woman for killing her fetus. I do applaud her for standing behind her convicitions of not creating anymore. IF i was still of child bearing age there is no way i would produce a baby at this time for the same reasons. THat has nothing to do with the elderly, or how happy your baby makes you either. WHat scares me spitless is the estimated rate of prorgression of humans from 6 million to 9 billion in less then 50 years with the eco problems are are already facing. WHat worries me is how to prepare the children that are here to survive and have a life worthy of them in the face of everything from global warming (and it's effects on the weather as well as our food) to their ability to fight off disease. I do not want them to suffer. I do not want them to suffer because i wanted a family. I was niave 25 years ago and didnt' look at life as closely as i do now. I only focused on what I wanted. Now i know it isn't about me, or my immediant family. IT is about all of us, and what our actions will create for the future.

WHat resources are you speaking of Puckstop?

Debi it's an issue because as I said...right now, in this country..it is the priveledge of those over a certain income...to live green. To afford to be able to do so.

I would like to know of programs that donate or provide at a REASONABLE comparable (to non green) cost, automobiles, cloth diaper service, organic canned and processed foods, renewable energy, to these people.

I think the environmental movements flaw...is that it is flat out too expensive...for people living at or below the poverty line.

If these people tend to have more children then the problem is compounded. It needs to be addressed in school sure...but when a kid comes home and is in the reality that hybrid cars, organic foods, and green choices are out of their reach...what do they really learn and think about the envrionmental movement?

They learn to not care and figure they might as well have as much fun as they can while they can. I hear it over and over and over again from the teens that have moved through our circle of life. THey learn to stuff their ears with music, their minds with videos, their spare time with games, they learn to escape, to disassociate, to be angry. THere are exceptions of course, but i will almost bet 7-1 that the majority feel it is already a done deal. They learn they should get everything they want because we bend over backwards to make sure they get it (a mistake i am not making with the second generation ofchildren in my life), and that the easy way is the way to go. Our lifestyle as it is now mandates this line of thinking. WE set the examples. I think we are an amazing creative species, adaptable, capable of great humanity and just as capable of great harm. But most of all i am astounded at the ability do deny what is unpleasant. ANd i fear that will be our greatest undoing.

I never suggested that we should do that.

And statistics show that a SOLEY elderly population isn't a good population.

We need to educate people about resoures, recycling, energy efficiancy, renewable resources and not having a gazillion children (I think we can promote the idea of less is more - not force it).

We need to lead by example too... the UK and the US need to catch up with some other European countries who are just above and beyond green - it puts us to shame.

The population is an issue though... a HUUUUUGE issue.... The UK is over populated, I can tell you that for free... so GOD knows how it feels to live somewhere like populated china or india :yikes:

I've heard that said before, and I agree. When a baby cries, they don't care if you're tired, hungry, sick, sleeping, etc. They just know what they want, and they want it NOW. Definately selfish.
thanks...no point in expanding, Gemp said it perfectly.

when did planting a garden become something out of reach? for urban people...maybe so...but anyone else with a backyard can do something so simple. I am so not talking about 'diaper service'...I'm saying simply wash your own cloth diapers...certainly that isn't only for the chosen. people 'below the poverty line' shouldn't be buying plastic Pampers anyway. you have never heard of going to the farm markets..buying fruit at a bargain...then making your own jams...canning your own fruit? why would that be a such a burden for a person of low economic means? the only thing I'll give you is that hybrid cars are pricey. otherwise......sorry, financial ability has nothing to do with the rest. ok...so a person who can't afford the solar panels won't be able to do it. but...'green' goes beyond that. it's about choices you make every day in your life. NO plastics to burden the landfills..NONE. natural living....it doesn't take a large income or a college education.

I do not want them to suffer. I do not want them to suffer because i wanted a family.
I've had this discussion on another board. I see this particular girl as making a choice for herself. People polute the planet, it's true. I don't think this should be promoted as a way to fight global warming, though.

But what Smkie said pretty much sums up my feeling in a nutshell. Having kids is a wonderful thing. Kids are joyous and all that crap. However, I do think that having a child is selfish. It's probably because I tend to have a pretty negative view of the world. Life is tough. I hate the thought of my son having to struggle through the disappointments in life. Sure, a lot of life is good, but you just have to face death at the end.

People have kids to fill a void within themselves. I've been struggling with this for a while now. I've been really evaluating why I want another baby and I can't think of one reason that is not self serving in some way.

Plus all the stuff Smkie already said about the environment. Why bring a poor innocent kid into the world to deal with the mistakes made by the generation before?

I hope nobody takes what I say personally. We all have beautiful children.
