We have Daisy just about where we want her, nice and trim but well muscled.

You can feel Gunnar's ribs but you can't see them with all his fur.

okay, first off most of you are coming from a show/pet background. ALL of my dogs work, specifically they hunt. my dogs in the off season (summer) RUN A MINIMUM of 36 miles a week, in the fall and winter they may run 30-100 miles a week. Roading in the off season is done for 12 miles at 25-30 MPH. i have an excellent picture to show of my catahoulaXamerican bulldog but it's after the kill on a large boar and is messy. it also shows my friends dogo chewing on it (it's a reward for a job well done). i am POSITIVE it would offend many. but i am trying to figure out how to crop out everything but the dogs. my boy was 23" 76# and you could see EVERY rib from 20 yards away. most of the year the dogs are semifree fed barf (mostly roadkill deer but also wild boar, chicken quarters and various other items). because of their higher activity level my dogs eat an average of 5% of their body weight a day (thats 2-3 X what is reccommended for couch potatoe pets). if i tried to run them like this while in the same condition as the brindle pitty that set off the discussion they would probably die. w/ that much extra fat & the lack of running needed to get that way it would kill the dog to try to hit a 12 mile 25-30 MPH run in 90+ degrees w/ 90% or worse humidity. but my "emaciated" bullX did this 3 times a week.
now for something less endurance oriented like weight pull the various bulls from bahamutt and reggin are absolutely outstanding. they might even make the same run but they would be feeling it more than my old dog. for pets they are 1000X better than most house pets.

The only faults I can see with Reggin are fairly minor. He's got a high tailset. The planes of his head don't look even (he's got the sloping forehead). And his topline doesn't slope down, but that also changes depending on which standard you read. I can't see too much from those pics, to be honest. My overall impression is that he's a pretty true-to-type dog. A little on the thicker side, but still correct enough. He's got a lot of strengths: tight feet, short loin, good muscle tone, looks like an arched neck if he were stacked up, clearly a masculine male dog without being overdone, better front angulation than many, proper head/muzzle ratio (at least for UKC). If he were registered UKC, I'd think you could finish him. He looks big, but he may just project himself like that.
Thank you. I always thought there was something weird going on with his head, but I wasn't sure what exactly. Some pics he looks a little thick and then others he doesn't so much. If you seen him in real life, I'm willing to bet that you'd think he is smaller than whats seen in those pics. Hes 63 pounds, so no too too big. And thanks again, I appreciate it.

I would be just fine seeing those pics, myself. Hunting and blood dont really bother me. One thing you could do is post a link to the picture or pictures with a warning. That way the more sensitive members dont have to see it. You can use photobucket.com for that. I would love to see the pictures myself.

Reggin have you seen this page? It shows what the APBT should look like conformationally. I'm not sure what standard it is going by or if everyone agrees with it, but I like it!

Yeah I read that website a few years ago. One of my faves. Its nice to have an opinion from someone about your specific dog. Thats why I asked. I dont think I'd be able to pick up on some of the things that she did. Thanks for the link thought!

i love the photobucket. you just about can't post photos directly anymore. if you zoom in and look close you can clearly see all of his ribs above and below the muscles running down the side of his ribs (on a truly emaciated dog those muscle won't be there).

Pops none of those dogs look any different than the numerous ABPT in this thread. And I dont see all the ribs. They look to be in great shape :).

Sic 'em, girl! That's exactly how I feel. The pics I posted of Priest in this thread. (At least the side shot of him pulling on his lead.) Those are current. He's going to a UKC show this weekend and probably going to be in there with folks who fatten their dogs up because that's what's expected. I defy that logic, and show my dogs fit. It may make our road a little longer, but dangit, if all the judges ever get to see are obese dogs, they're going to pick obese dogs. I made a conscious decision not to show an obese dog, or to allow my dogs to get obese. I'm obese, and I know how hard it can be. I wouldn't do that to my bratty butts.
and huge kudos to you for that. i also appreciate like hell that you didn't crop him even though that's what wins in the show ring. i wish more people stuck to what is right for the dog and the breed and didn't pander to judges just for the points. yes, i know they want to finish their dogs etc etc, but it seems so wrong to me, and that's probably why i'll never ever set foot in a conformation ring.

Thank you. I get that a lot. People thinking he is an american bulldog or mixed with american bulldog. And then I get the people who think he is part boxer.

His dad is the came color as him, but shorter. His mom was tan and taller than his dad.

His mom, dad, and baby sister who died of valley fever.

His dad.

I'm beginning not to like the show scene. From the things I've heard and seen. More about looks than working ability. Thats a huge turn off to me.

Pops, your dogs look to be in great working order. I also think there is a huge difference with seeing ribs that are obviously covered in muscle and ribs that are just plain showing. Many of the "in shape" dogs I see are just skinny and don't have that slab of muscle that accentuates the ribcage.

Is the white dog a Dogo? We've got an old Dogo that we left with family in St. Louis. He'll be 10 in March. At one point, we wanted to test him on hog, but since he was already 7 then, we didn't want to just let him loose in the woods. It's very hard to find people who will admit to owning a pen, because then the Peta anti-"rodeo" people will be up their butts. Sucked for us, but it gave us a good excuse not to worry about breeding him since he hadn't been tested in his historic pursuit.

Ha, yeah. Although the no-cropping is probably going to come back to bite us now that Terra's ears are more up than down. LOL No matter, I just don't like cropping. If my dogs never become champions, there is still a lot they can do.

Pardon me for not really being into the thread . I just want to comment on ears . I really don't like small cropped ears on a nice big well balanced Bullie .

Great looking dog, Pops :) My little APBT, Tallulah, is 13 months old and just really beginning to muscle up right (she almost died with parvo before she came to me), but I do believe she is headed that direction. I'm getting her into weight pulling to give her something to do and to get her into shape . . . thinking seriously about seeing if my Fila bitch, Kharma, will do it. She's beautifully muscled - faster and more agile than the Pittie, too, surprisingly. Especially surprising to Tallulah :rofl1:

Exactly, when someone says "all the ribs should be showing" I think emaciated, but all these gorgeous dogs on this thread look as they SHOULD. But people have a hard time finding a medium. Some are underweight with no muscle tone and most dogs are fat. I get the "he's so skinny" crap all the time but he's built like a tank. How do you guys deal with people who know it all, and "critique" your dog?
