5000 is a lot of money for a poodle that is only going to be a pet.

I paid 1000 and 1200 for my toys and there is also the rescue route as you mentioned.

I dont recommend and dog to people who dont have the money to spend but there is no reason not to learn to do it yourself if you can.

If I had more time and patience I would learn to do mine.

It is very expensive to have 2 poodles and 1 yorkie groomed every 4 weeks but we do it anyway.

We have had ACL surgery done... broken legs cared for.. plenty of ER trips... cancer surgery, etc. between 4 dogs and 3 cats and it has always been done and paid for... they all eat good food, get lots of attention, etc... but if we could save the money on grooming it would be nice... so I dont think this is a reason not to get or be given a poodle.
thank you!
I would actually LOVE to learn how to groom my own Poodle or any dog that needs regualr grooming like a Poodle does. I love grooming animals in general. But I cannot spend alot of money to get a Poodle groomed. I am by far not rich and I can afford a Poodle but I will NOT spend 5000$ or even 2000$ for a dog of any kind UNLESS I was flithy rich and wanted a dog so bad, but that is not likely to happen. Granted I will buy from a good, reponsible breeder and not from a BYB. I can provide the attention, care, obedience, grooming, and anything else a Poodle or any other dog needs, so I dont think I should be told I shouldn't get a Poodle cause I cant do regular grooming, I can go get grooming every 6weeks, which from what I'm told is fine to do.

Duncan please do not tell me or any other member here that we shouldn't get a dog cause we cant get grooming every 2-4 weeks like your boss can cause not everyone is made of money and not all of us can afford a 5000$ dog. This is just stating my opinion, I find it rude to say something like that duncan.

i just made an enitre post and it ate it *grumbles*

duncan you come across very pushy, almost snobbish, the op NEVER said they wernt willing to properly groom their dog, there was more a simple question of how much is nessicary in terms fo clipping and does it HAVE to be done by a professional groomer.

you do NOT need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on equiptment to groom 1 pet! if you were showing and breeding and grooming more than 1-2 dogs then yes, investing in a good table and such is wonderfull...
but i groom my cc puff by throwing a none slip mat on our dining room table with a drop cloth underneath, she stays well but when shes fidgity i have my sister help out by keeping her in place, i use a $70 pair of clippers for the body and a mans trimmer for the face and ive had compliments from our groomer on how "professional" ruby looks!

just because i dont take her to the groomer every couple of weeks to get groomed and didnt spend hundereds upon hundereds on grooming equiptment does that mean im unworthy of owning my dog?! there needs to be a chill pill...

that being said, again it can be alot of fun grooming your own dog, i love grooming ruby myself and she seems to enjoy being groomed, i started form day one putting her on the table and treating like crazy and introduced the scissors and clippers in a realy positive way...
its fun!
theres also no reason you cant MAKE a grooming table (especially for smaller breeds) once my rooms finnihsed i plan on having my father build a nice breakfast bar which ill have a braket attatched to the end that a grooming arm can easily slot into safely, a none slip pad on top and a dropcloth to protect the furniture and tada easy grooming table...but right now our dining rom table works perfectly!
if you get a poodle though and plan on leanring to groom yourself i do suggest investing in a GOOD set of clippers, my $70 whall clippers work great, but once i can afford it i will be upgrading to something much better (mine tend to get a little hot a little too quickly for my liking!)

i also wanted to say $1000 seems a little high...
of the breeders ive had contact with in this area of ct at leas, pet quality (spay/neuter contract, and yes you can still compete in agility ect with a spay/neutered animal) there averaging 6-800 from good tested lines form small but responsible breeders.
rescues of course are much less and might be a great choice.

ive NEVER met with a shelter that refuses to adot to someone simply because they say theyd rather have a family memeber or learn to groom for themselves. any that do and ONLY base on that is denying their dogs potentially WONDERFULL homes!
many ask what kind of grooming the potential adopter is expecting/willing to do, and they inform you that it can cost up to 100 every 6-8 weeks to groom your poodle, but ive never heard of anyone being told heck no simply because they ask does it HAVE to be professionally groomed?!

i think as a breed its certainly one for you to continue to look into...
like with all breeds you will occasionally run into the "breed elite" that go beyond advising and into almost bullying, dont let them discourage you from your quest of knowledge. grooming of the poodle can be EXPANSIVE and can work out expensive, but theres no reason to think that you cant learn to do it yourself...

good luck!

thanks you!!!

Sorry your computer ate your other post.
I am still looking into other breeds. I think I have it narrowed down though from a mini poodle, pembroke welsh corgi, goldens, and possibly a mix from a shelter.
So you never know.

Paraphrase from my friend when I asked her:
"Tell her that I am a groomer, I have two Powder Puff Cresteds that are shaved to look like hairless, and a Std. Poodle [ed: I forgot to ask her the cut, sorry, but his body is kept pretty short, and his face and feet are clean]. My husband wanted to get a second Std. Poodle. I told him he had better find an extra $70 a month so I can find someone else to groom the dog 'cause I ain't doing it. We added a rescue pit bull to the family two months ago and I haven't looked back since. He is easier to groom, and is more of a joy to work with in class than the poodle. I'm done with poodles."

So there's your input from a Std Poodle owner.

i guess when you groom all day at work as your career then have to come home and do your own dogs it can be a little too much...i know i LOVE grooming my puff (and occasionally the cocker, the chis realy ddont need much lol) but i also know if i had to groom all day every day then come home and do my own dogs THAT would get old VERY fast.

and i sismorphine! i wanna see pics of thoe ccs lol!

I understand, if I groomed dogs all day and had to come home and groom my own, i would be done to. But I'm not in that situation so I believe I would like to groom my own Poodle, if I were to get one.

Got one of my grooming tables second hand for $50 and it was almost new. The owner bought it for his Bernese Mountain Dog and didn't realize that he would grow so big and outgrew the table. You can find other second hand equipment in adds if you keep looking. Lots of time grooming salons go out of business and you can pick up a few good things that way.

I say, if your able and willing to learn how to groom your own poodle then more power to you. It's a great bonding time.

Honestly duncan, methinks you're exaggerating the puppy prices you listed. I know two standard poodle breeders, and neither of them charges that much for their puppies. One breeder is also a well known professional handler (famous for his toys), and the other is the breeder of quite possibly the best blues in the country. So I'd venture to say they aren't small fries in the breed - not to mention I've known them for a long time, they're amazing and so are their dogs.

Don't assume we're all ignorant idiots about poodles - some of us own them, some of us groom them professionally, and some of us know prominent people in the poodle world. ;)

Also would like to add... dakotah, don't take too much offense at dunc's comments. I just looked at his/her post history, and out of 38 posts *maybe* two of them were nice. Check for yourself, and you'll see the majority of what they've posted has been argumentative, hostile, and downright mean.

You know who loves you on this board... :D Weeeee doooo!

In a private IM earlier, I told Dakotah the same thing... it seems duncan comes on only to cause trouble or say something nasty.

I honestly didnt mean to take offensive, I just dont like being told I shouldnt own a dog.
I'm glad I'm loved cause I love yall to. hahaha :D

Thanks Poodlemommy.

Blues are an unique color to say the least. very pretty though.

Ok I was going to make another thread but since this one is so popular I'll say what I have to here. :)
I have narrowed down my breed choices and what I want to do.

Breed choices:
1) Border Collie
2) Pembroke Welsh Corgi
3) possibly a Golden.

I chose a BC and a Corgi because they are both good dogs and have traits on what I'm looking for. They are both easy to find around where I live and BCs are VERY easy cause we have lots of farms/ranches where I live who trully take this breed seriously.
Golden is just an opinion, but they are WAY over bred and I dont want to take the chance in getting a "bad" Golden, but I know my wonderful Chazzzzer friends will help me, if that ends up being the choice of dog I want.

I want to do, of course, obedience training, and Therapy Work and possibly, if time is on my side, Flyball.
I tried to IM RD, but she wasnt online.
But if anyone can tell me more about BCs and therpy work, that would be great. But let me know if I need to make a seperate thread. I would like to kep it here since my friends visit it often. :)

I *still* say a Pembroke is the perfect dog for you - they're hardy, happy dogs and make GREAT height dogs in Flyball. There just aren't enough words to describe how great these little dogs are.
