Can someone please post pictures of their Poodles and their haircuts? Also, if possible, can you post pictures of different Poodle haircuts?

And do you have to Pro Groom a Poodle every 6-8 weeks? I will not be able to that as I dont have money to spend to get a dog pro grooming that often. I can probably get him/her grooming 2-3 times a year. Will it hurt not to get a Poodle groomed as often as 6-8 weeks? I dont plan on showing in a ring or in conformation, but I will do obedience and flyball and I dont think their coats have to be pro groomed to do these activities.

TIA :)

I don't have a picture, but my mom has had standard poodles my whole life, and she always keeps them in a puppy clip, which pretty much means the shaggy dog look.

I think she has hers groomed every two months or so . . . but I know she's gone for 3. If you can afford a set of clippers, though, I bet you can do it yourself,

Thanks! My grandma has Scottish Terriers and grooms her own dogs, and she might be able to groom a Poodle and i dont have to pay, AWESOME! :D. I actually just thought about my grandma and grooming. She has a grooming table, all the clippers and brushes, and has books on how to clip and different clippings.
I actually prefer the puppy clip cause I like the shaggy look, its cute. haha.

Your poodle will need to be shaved right down if you only get it done that often, otherwise you will have a matted. painful, dirty poodle. however b/c I am the most awesome groomer ever I will post pics of my poodle. He gets bathed and fully brushed out once a week (roughly) and full groomed atleast every 4 ish weeks.
Oh and if you go to a groomer DO NOT ask for a puppy clip as this means a million different things to a million different groomers!! Just explain to her exactly the look that you want and she will do her best. Unless you want the full on poodle show puppy trim, which is not a shaggy look when the groomer does it but will look quite straggly if not kept up.

Swirl Clip

Modern Clip

Short Body Scissor Leg

Um, not sure what exactly you would call this one.

I like Modern Clip and the Short Body Scissor Leg.
My grandma will probably be grooming, if I get a Poodle, my Poodle. Since she knows about grooming and grooms her own Scotties every 6 weeks. My grandma, as I said before, has all the grooming tools and grooming books so she wont have a problem to groom my pup.
I didnt know people have many ideas about the puppy clip. I like the fluffy look like the Modern Clip but the smoother clip in the summer like the SBSL.

Are Mini Poodles good at swimming like the Standards are?

I feel the same way. I just dont my dog to be in pain from matts or any other hair issues. At least my grandma might know how to groom a Poodle so I dont have to pay big bucks for a doggy haircut.

Yes you can keep you poodle's matting at bay with just brushing (brushing properly with a slicker then a fine tooth comb, being careful of hard to reach spots such as arm pits, flanks and behind ears).
If I don't brush my poodles everyday he is matted the next

I'm trying to think how mom avoids matts, since they've never been a problem with her poodles. I know she brushes, and keeps their coat relatively short, if shaggy. Again, I'll ask when I speak to her.

The type of poodle coat can depend on how often you'd need to brush. If your poodle's coat is textured like a poodle's coat should be then you'd have to brush then comb through every day if you wish to keep it longer as in a puppy clip or looking "shaggy".

If your poodle's coat is thin and not what a poodle hair should be, in other words a poorly bred poodle (which is mostly what I've seen in my clients coat) then the hair doesn't tend to get matted as fast and brushing every other day to every 5 days is ok.

Some of my clients come in every 8 weeks and they are in fairly good condition where others mat up all most as soon as they walk out the salon...lol

Dakota, learning to groom you own poodle can take some time but isn't impossible. Maybe you could watch how your grand mother grooms him/her and she could teach you the basics. Also there are some good grooming books that can help you out. And the nice thing about owning a poodle is that you can groom him/her which ever way you like. Once you own a poodle you'll see that you'll fall in love with their personality and hair just doesn't seem to matter at that point.

Good luck with your search! What size are you getting?

you may find you enjoy learning how to clip your own poodle if you were to get one...and being its not a show dog (and for agility and flyball you do NOT have to have your dog in an "oficially regocnized" show clip) you can have alot of fun.

theres one lady in my town with a standard poodle named Star, she keeps her in a longhish "puppy/kennel" clip in the winter but cuts out the shape of a star on her poodles hip, then in the summer she goes for a mid lenght continental style but instead of huge pompoms she cuts it into the shape of a star and dyes it yellow with lemon Koolaid, it looks awsome, she does the same to her white mini named amore only she has a heart shape.
her black mini gets a new doo every couple of weeks, i think shes tried every clip and makes up her own, she just loves and has alot of fun grooming her poodles, sometimes the cuts look funny, othertimes its scary how creative she is, and the poodles LOVE the attention they get.

since getting ruby my cresti i have alot of fun learning to do pony and "lion" cuts with her and cutting in different shapes and just generally having fun

if you start grooming a puppy early many learn to actually enjoy being on the table.

if you dont want matting you will have to BRUSH/COMB frequently, but you dont nessicarily have to spend a fortune on professional grooming for fancy cuts.
it is also cheaper to keep a dog in a specific cut, a groomer might charge you $50 for the initial bathe and cut, then tell you to come in in 4 weeks and itll only cost $25 because its just a quick trim/tidy up...

if your grandmother is comfortable grooming (ive found having pictures availabel very helpfull) then theres no reason not to look into the breed :)

I would love to learn to groom my own Poodle! That would be cheaper to do and save gas driving back and forth to my grandma house every 6-8 weeks.

I will look into those poodle grooming books and the tools I need to groom. I will probably watch my grandma groom my Poodle, if I get one, or go to a grooming place and watch them and then gradually do my own grooming. I would have to keep a close shave during the summer cause its VERY hot here and kind of long during the winter cause it gets VERY cold here.

Oh I want a Mini Poodle, prefered black. But I'm looking into different colored Poodles. What colors are NOT AKC registered? So that if I buy from a breeder I will know what colors are recongized and what colors aren't.

ok, i hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but if you cant afford to get your dog groomed tregularly, then a poodle is not for you. i work for a standard poodle breeder, and know the people who run the Southern California Poodle Rescue, and they would not give you a poodle or let you buy one just based on that. and if you dont have money to afford grooming, then how are you going to affor the equipment. lets see, a tablle can be bought for about 100 bucks including the arm (a crappy table at that) good clippers are 200 bucks, plues you need al the blades which are 30 for the worst brand, each. brushes and combs are very costly if you get good products, and they need to be replaced frequently, as well as your blades. plus you need a stand dryer (minimum of 400 bucks) and a high velocity dryer (minimum of 200). you also need high qaulity bathing products. all of thesde things are needed for a quality grooming on a poodle.

if you are planning on buying from a breeder, i can gaurentee that a responsible breeder will not sell you a dog. my boss is selling puppies right now, and if someone isnt prepared to groom their dog regulary, she will not sell them a dog. poodle rescue is the same way. they dont just give you a dog just b/c you want one. my boss has 8 poodles and i can tell you that grooming them is very difficult, and they all need to be brushed saily, and groomed every 2 weeks.

i understand you want a poodle. they are great dogs. but right now, may not be the right time for you to get one. how much time do you even have to spend with the dog. poodles need their owners. they are not a dog that you can just leave at home all day in the backyard. my boss will not sell any dog to someone who works fulltime, b/c she knows that dog will not have a good quality life. you hear lots of stories about how difficult poodles are, and that is only b/c people get them and do not realize how much time they need with their owners, and that yes, they do need weekly grooming. stop thinking selfishly and realize that you are not in the right place for a dog like this, and that you will be hard pressed to find someone willing to give you one. and if you cant afford the grooming, how can you afford the dog. my boss sells pet quality poodles for $2000, and show quality for about $5000 (and she makes no profit off of that). if you can find a cheap poodle, who is bred or cared for by someone who doesnt care about the fact that you cant provide the needed care, then i would be willing to bet that dog will come with a whole mess of problems that will cost you more than a year of regular grooming.

I have anough time to spend with a Poodle. I am homeschooled and can spend all day with him/her. I dont think you have to spend 5000$ for a dog UNLESS you want to spend that much. Sorry thats crazy to spend that much on a dog, IMO. Some people do it and I am not bashing you for doing so, but you can find a good dog at a shelter/rescue and one at a good, reponsible breeder for less than 5000$.

IMO.

5000 is a lot of money for a poodle that is only going to be a pet.

I paid 1000 and 1200 for my toys and there is also the rescue route as you mentioned.

I dont recommend and dog to people who dont have the money to spend but there is no reason not to learn to do it yourself if you can.

If I had more time and patience I would learn to do mine.

It is very expensive to have 2 poodles and 1 yorkie groomed every 4 weeks but we do it anyway.

We have had ACL surgery done... broken legs cared for.. plenty of ER trips... cancer surgery, etc. between 4 dogs and 3 cats and it has always been done and paid for... they all eat good food, get lots of attention, etc... but if we could save the money on grooming it would be nice... so I dont think this is a reason not to get or be given a poodle.
