Everyone makes mistakes the first go round! I'm sure his coat will grow in fast. Yes he does look a little thin, up his feeding just a little bit and see how that goes.

Really thanks for your kind words. I am not playing with him to compensate it. Lucky that during the play, he has stopped shaking his heads.

I will follow the sunscreen, lotion and ear clean suggestion.

The ONLY good thing of this mistake is I found he is really thin. Now I should feed him more.

A simple trim and grooming will keep him cool in hot weather, for future reference. There's no need to shave a dog because of heat. :)

I think the cut was some sort of mistake, maybe? She's been around a while and make numerous posts about grooming her poodle. I'm thinking this new shaved look is a result from this thread http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52020 judging by her comment .

Who knows..

In any case, I agree that the dog is a little thin.
The reason I was so upset about it is because I felt guilty due to this thread in this quote and new you tried clipping him they way I did it on this dog. If you need any help in grooming him I'd be more then glad to offer you any.

It looks like you have a home grooming kit. They must have come with attached combs for the clipper. Those combs varies on what length you want to shave your dog. Without them you're basically using the same blade surgeons use to shave pre-op.

Like RD mentioned this was just a mistake and hair does grow back. I'll see if I can record some grooming and send it too you. If you really want to groom him yourself then with practice you'll get there. It's a great bonding time with him. :)

Another thing to watch is that now without his coat he will actually get HOTTER faster instead of staying cooler like most people think. A dog's fur insulates them from both the cold AND heat. Watch his skin for black heads too and make sure to keep him clean (pamper's baby wipes are good for this) and lotioned. If you put sunscreen on it should be one intended for babies or young children and should be washed off when you come back inside. I would also not let her play with other dogs, she can now very easily be scratched and get an open wound from a simple play bite.

Just so you know that clipper comes with 3 settings a 10, 15, and 30 length blade. You onlyever use 15 and 30 lengths for the dogs groin and pads because it's very short (the higher the number the closer the shave)
Get a clipper where you can take the blades off and exchange them, try a 7 blade or a 5.

Way to thin. His ribs are showing. Keep him out of the sun. Shaved that close he's bound to burn. Dumb thing to do imo!

Hi Tony... interesting pictures! (As everyone has stated.) You will not use a #30 or #40 on you pup. It was obvious that that is what was used, from your pictures. I imagine you were also unable to use the extensions because your puppy was matted or felting. Now that he's stripped, you'll want to use a light fitted dog jacket or t-shirt from the pet store, when you take him outside. As he's an apricot, you'll find that rubbing sunscreen on will not be enough. In approx. 3 weeks you should have some coat covering the entire body and this will be when you start mantaining him so you don't have to strip him again. He should be getting a bath no more than once a month. (have a feeling you're doing it more frequently) and he should be getting brushed daily with a light spritz of diluted leave-in coat conditioner. You also need to get a metal comb. This should be used after a brush out so you're able to find where he's still tangled. You will need to use a #4 blade to keep a kennel cut and a sufficient amount of fur, on this pup. Unfortunately, I don't think a #4 is something you should use after seeing this picture. You need to be very good at grooming before you start using skip tooths' and blades that can catch skin or nipples. Hope you'll go to a proffessional groomer to get you started on this. They can set a pattern for you, show you how to maintain and trim in between groom appts. and explain the different blades and how to use them. For now, you will just have to keep that naked baby warm! Lol Good luck!

He's much too thin, not just a bit thin, IMO. Those hip bones should not be standing out like that and he's showing too much rib, especially for a pup. I'd recommend feeding him smallish meals 5 or 6 times a day until he fills out, then level off at 2 or 3 meals a day. Feed him a high quality, premium food, which has ample protein, fat, trace minerals and vitamins etc.

everyone makes mistakes.

ur last town only had one groomer. and we heard that they had cut a dogs ear with their scissors. so we started doing her at home.

when the clippers broke and we started doing her with scissors... well it took a long time. so we'd do about a leg and half her back then we'd have to stop.
she got terribly embarressed on occasion.

its okay, follow everyones advice. you know better now. its a learning experience and atleast now you know your pup is too thin

I recommend you ask grooming questions in the grooming forum. That way, you'll get more responses from people experienced in grooming and even some professional groomers. Your dog was bred to have hair, so I would think that the hair is meant to be. Perhaps a little light clipping would be good and keep mats from forming.... and some good brushing every day would be the best when his hair grows back.

One good thing that came from that is that you are able to really see how thin he is. He'll be fine once you fatten him up. Don't go too fast or go overboard with the feeding. When he gets so you can feel his ribs when you run your hands down his sides with some pressure, that should be good. But you shouldn't feel them protruding too much and you shouldn't only feel fat and no ribs either. The best thing to do when you're not sure about his weight or condition is pop into your vet's office and ask. It wouldn't take but a minute for the vet or vet tech to pop out into the waiting room and give you their opinion.

I agree with using a t-shirt and really being careful about the sun. Keep him out of it until his hair grows in.

Good luck. Let us know how he comes along. He really is quite adorable.

You may want to give your dog a raw or hard boiled egg a few times a week, it can really help put weight on. I would also up his regular food ration or mix in some canned food daily.

I agree with the others that the shave was too extreme, but you know that by now ;) Get him a shirt to wear in the mean time...

This is why I hate when people with no grooming experience get clippers in order to "save money" and groom their own dogs. They may be great pet owners, but they aren't groomers! Grooming is a skill and everyone makes mistakes even WITH guidance and experienced help. It's a horrible idea to just get clippers and use them on your dog without knowing what you're doing. People can really hurt their dogs that way. I'm surprised the dog pictured isn't all cut up from being shaved so close to the skin. It looks like he might have clipper burn in some places. :( I'm really glad to hear that you aren't going to attempt home grooming again!! :) It's so much better to leave certain things to the professionals.

And yes, he is definitely way too thin. I'm really surprised that people have said that they think he's a little too thin. He's emaciated. The way you can tell is if you can see the outline of his spine or hips, or easily count his ribs by looking at him.

Is this the same dog that has "milkshake" stools on another thread? That might have somnething to do with his weight. Maybe a vet visit is in order?
