^^ I've heard about Castor and Pollux, and Nature's Variety as well. I heard talk of Natura using Menu Foods as well but I didn't know if it was true or not.

This is making me want to prepare my own food for my dogs =/

I think the real question here revolves not even around outsourcing production, (which in itself carries potential quality issues), but around the fact that wheat was imported from a foreign country half way around the world that does not have the same restrictions and health rules regarding what can or cannot be present in wheat.

So the news is talking about how they are now looking into the fact that this contaminated wheat supply may have made it into the human food supply....

This wouldn't surprise me at all, considering how fast and loose our government has been playing with regulations, inspections and imports, globalization of simply everything, public health be damned. Corporate profit. That's the Holy Graile. So what's a little rat poison in the Subjects' food supply. I mean why not the rats too? Upton Sinclaire must be rolling in his grave. First 1984, next: The Jungle.

That is so horrible. I'm not surprised, though--anything for a buck. :mad:

I can't believe how many different companies outsource to Menu Foods. Why even call yourself a separate company then, you know??

DogExplorer.com News - State officials in New York have detected a substance used both as a rat poison and anti-cancer drug, Aminopterin, in samples of suspect pet food.

No explanation was given as to how the poison entered the food or when in the process the dog and cat foods became contaminated. Neither State nor Federal law enforcement agencies have indicated any criminal investigations are planned.

According to Wikipedia, Aminopterin (4-aminopteroic acid) is a 4-amino analog of folic acid. It is a substance with properties that suppress the immune system (lower anti infection system strength in the body) and is commonly used in chemotherapy.

In the same article, Wikipedia claims ABC News has reported wheat from China may have been contaminated with Aminopterin (used there as a rat poison) and wheat byproducts (wheat gluten) from those shipments may have been used in the production of the dog food and cat food suspected in the deaths of the nearly 1,000 pets in the United States.

A statement issued by the New York Department of Agriculture confirms that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory "…identified Aminopterin as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods, the manufacturer of the many brands of dog and cat food that are currently the subject of a nationwide recall."

The statement claimed that Aminopterin was found in samples "…at a level of at least 40 parts per million."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aminopterin
Wikipedia says that Aminopterin is not approved for use as rat poison in Canada or the United States, and that it has a It has an lethal dose of 2.5mg/kg when orally administered to rats.

Lets do some math here...

20lbs = 9.07kg
9.07 x 2.5mg = 22.675mg

So 22.675mg is a potentially lethal dose for a 20lb dog (this is assuming what is lethal for rats is the same for dogs). If we take that there are 40 parts per million of Aminopterin in the food...

2.2lbs = 1kg = 1000g
1000g / 1,000,000(parts) = 0.001g = 1 part
0.001 * 40 parts = 0.04g of Aminopterin per 1000g of food
0.04g = 40mg

So there are 40mg of Aminopterin per 2.2lbs of food, or 20mg per 1.1lbs!

So a lethal dose of this dog food could be between 1.1 - 2.2lbs for a 20lb dog.

That's flippin' CRAZY!

Spirit, I doubt that Sugar's death was in any way related to this particular recall.

I'm getting more and more upset the more I read though...I mean, I don't shell out $45 bucks a bag to have it made right next to Kibbles n' Bits. I'm paying for quality, I want that quality.

I also read on another forum that Natura does use the Menu Foods facility in South Dakota to produce their products!!! :yikes:

Toby eats Karma Organic, so I emailed them as well. (Karma is part of Natura). I got an email back stating that Karma Organics is NOT made in a Menu Foods facility. It is made in a organic certified facility.

That being said, I do give Toby Innova canned!!! I can't believe that a company like Innova would be making its food right next to food like Ol' Roy and Iams!!!! It's disgusting. I'm in shock.

What companies have you looked at ?? I would be interested to know what quality foods DIDNT use menu foods...

Cause Im sorry, but who's to say that the South Dakota plant where Natura gets its food manufactored wont screw something up...

and Im seriously considering switching..because like Zoom said, when you pay anywhere from 30-50 dollars a bag for dog food, you expect it to be quality in EVERY single aspect...
