Feeding a high quality food is more cost effective than feeding food that is full of fillers and low quality 'food.' You feed less, they poop less, they tend to be leaner with more muscle mass (depending of course) and don't get the greasy sick looking coats that many dogs on low quality foods get. We can't make you feed quality food to your pet but many, many people believe that quality ingredients for both humans and other animals are the key to good health. there is plenty of research to support that.

Why dont you do a search on chaz for some good foods, then email the co's for some samples. Then you can figure out what your chi will eat, and go from there. You do save money in the long run by feeding your dog a healthier dish. Its not about class or money, its about food quality. :)

We pay $8 for a 5 lb bag of Canidae that lasts my 15lb Schnauzer mix 3 weeks.

$10/month for dog food!

Cindr--By the way, IAMS isn't a good food at all and incredibly overpriced.

I thought this post was worthy of being repeated. I highly suggest visiting Mordy's site, dogfoodproject.com. You can see for yourself the ingredients in many commercial dog foods and are able to make an educated decision yourself after reading through the site. Best of luck to you, PuppyPalace.

Oh, you don't want to feed your dog that. Here is the ingredients list.
Ingredients
Ground yellow corn, soybean meal, ground whole wheat, corn syrup, poultry fat, Meat and bone meal (Animal Fat Preserved with BHA and Citric Acid), Chicken by-product Meal, Rice, Animal Digest, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Vitamin D and E Supplement, Niacin, Copper Sulafate, Manganous Oxide, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Meadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex Source of Vitamin K, Calcium Iodate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Cobalt Carbonate, Folic Acid, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid

Compare that to a quality food such as (for example) Innova Evo.
Ingredients
Turkey, Chicken, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Herring Meal, Chicken, Fat, Natural Flavors, Egg, Garlic, Apples, Carrots, Tomatoes, Cottage Cheese, Alfalfa Sprouts, Dried Chicory Root, Taurine, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract, Vitamins/Minerals, Viable Naturally Occurring Microorganisms

Do you see the difference? You can check out http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ for more info on what to look for in a dog food.

Some of the quality foods seem more expensive, but you don't have to feed as much. Plus you will save on vet bills in the long run.

I think Canidae is pretty resonably priced, you might want to check that out.

When you feed a high quality food, you feed your dog much less of it. I have three chihuahuas, and they are on Timberwolf Organics... I buy a 4lb bag for $8 which lasts almost a month. There are many holistic foods which are cheaper than this...
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul is one of the cheapest holistic foods. It is a great food... I'm pretty sure my mom pays $15 for a 20lb bag.
Also, yorkies can eat foods with higher protein. I do not like to go above 28-30% protein with dry food for my chihuahuas, but higher protein from good meat sources is great.
I would also like to say that Iams isn't a very good food as well... ground yellow corn is the 2nd ingredient, which is the cheapest filler (along with wheat).

My male yorkie got sick from to much protein i fed him 24-26% protein in Diamond dog food and i spent $300 on vet bills because of it. Also Iam's i'll never go near there's been reports that dogs have become very ill and some died from eating Iam's.

Right now I have a 6.5lb bag of Nutro dog food, and I haven't been back to the Petsmart in over a month. I still have half the bag left. Unlike many people, I leave my food out all the time. I don't put it out 1x in the morning and 1x at night, I put it out in the morning, and I normally don't have to put more out for a few days because they don't even eat the whole bowls worth of food in a day. Trust me, by spending a little bit more at that time, you're actually saving. You use a lot less of a good brand, I know from experience. I have 2 Yorkies. 1 Yorkie would eat even less. Good luck in choosing a food. I fed my Lab Ol' Roy for years, and while she lived out a long, happy life, she was over weight, and had health issues. We never knew food could make such a difference! Since we began feeding Nutro, it's been a big improvement. Our girls are healthy as can be. :D

I have large dogs and I don't spend $60 a month. No offense, but you're way off on this food thing. You asked a question and then got mad when people replied honestly. Personally, I prefer my dogs eat a food that is good for them. If I wanted to feed them garbage they'd eat straight out of the trash can...

But maybe it was some other issue with your male. Doesn't mean your female will be the same way! But it seems like we are hitting a brick wall.

My vet said small toy breeds can not handle alot of protein in there body. I've heard no bad things about Pruina, i haven't seen many people feeding Nutro but i'll be going to the store and i'll write dog brands down. Thanks for that site dogfoodproject that was interesting i think i'll be throwing that bag of Ol' Roy out. It has more bad things in it than i thought, i haven't heard anybody mention Pedigree?

I know they can be expensive in some stores? I shop at WalMart, Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus. :)

Royal Canin has some breed specific foods, and they have one formula for Yorkies. I don't know anything about the quality or price of this food. I just have a friend with a Yorkie who was not eating. She had tried many foods, and he had quit eating. Oh, he would eat if he accidently got into the cat's food, but he wouldn't eat his own. She decided to try this one, and he's eting again. Like I said, I know nothing about it, but it appealed to one picky Yorkie.

I've fed Purina to my puppies for many years like i said i just stopped because my yorkie didn't like it. Also buying a yorkie she can't have that much protein so its hard balancing a good food brand. I've never took my dogs to the vet like some people do. If my dog has 1 little problem i don't rush it to a vet and get charged a bundle and there's nothing seriously wrong.

I don't belive dog foods are the only to blame some people don't feed there dogs right. With Ol'Roy i only feed her half a cup a day and she's not plump but not thin. Some people belive that if they spend $30 a bag that the dog will be healthy. I'm sorry thats a bunch of crap and its not true off brands and lower brands are just as good. If you want to get all that i suggest meat shakes and blends for your dog. It cost alot less and it won't hurt the puppy, same with people and treats such as a peanut butter lick.

Not everything makes a dog sick like people say some just like to over react. I know better safe than sorry but owning and perviously fostering dogs i'd have to say i've met very over reactive pet owners. If there dog gets a cold they rush it to the vet like its life or death. I'm not saying not to feed higher food brands but not everything is what people say. Sometimes it gets a little crazy and stupid for my taste.
Ol Roy is cheap because it's made with cheap, useless ingredients. They put fillers (or useless ingredients) in the food to put weight in the bag. Sure your paying $8 for 40lbs of dog food, but your dog is poohing out most of what it's eating.

"It won't hurt the puppy." When I rescued my 20lb terrier mix, his owner was feeding him Ol'Roy. He had horrible ear infections from the large amounts of wheat in the food. It was incredibly hard to house train him because there are so many useless ingredients in Ol'Roy that he was constantly poohing.

I did my research and found that Ol Roy is literally the worst food you can feed a dog hands down. I switched to a premium food. No more ear infections. House training became much easier.

I pay $10.00 for 5lbs of Nature's Logic. It takes me 3 weeks to go through 5lbs and I have a 20lb terrier. That's about 12.00 a month. I would pay that for my dog. And there are much less expensive premium dog foods out there.

Chicken soup $30 for 35lb
Pro Pac $20 for 30lb
Eagle Pack Original $22 for 33lb

You obviously asked about the food because you were concerned that OlRoy was not good quality, and the cheap price was probably the reason you were concerned. Tell me, would you buy the cheapest most generic coffee on the shelf? But you would feed your dog the cheapest most generic and proven unhealthy dog food.

I know you don't take your dogs to the vet, but honestly, ask your vet what he thinks about Ol Roy.

Good choice on tossing the Ol'Roy. :) If you haven't heard bad things about Purina, you haven't asked anyone here. ;) Check out the ingredients list on Purina, Pedigree, Science Diet, etc, and you will see what I mean.

I went to Petco's website and it looks like they sell Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, and Natural Balance. I would go with one of those. I think the Natural Balance is the lowest in protein of the three. Royal Canin would be allright too, but I think it's too expensive for the quality. You'll get more for your money with the other brands I mentioned. I hope that helps! :)

One 15lb bag of Canidae All Life Stages ($25 here) lasts my 55lb Border Collie mix and my 23lb Corgi a month or MORE. That's less than half the money per month of what you seem to think it costs.

People get put off by the price tag of premium foods, but what they fail to realize is that you feed less of it because it's more nutrient-dense than the crappy food from wal-mart or the grocery store.

I wouldn't touch Ol' Roy with a 40 foot pole. That is my honest answer. I don't care for Pedigree either. They put more money into their fancy commercials than they do the quality of their food.

If you shop at PetCo, maybe you could try out a bag of Natural Balance. It is a fair good quality food... much better than Ol' Roy or Pedigree, and it is not too expensive. I'd say it's probably about $1 per lb.

EDIT: Melissa beat me to the NB lmao...

Yes, toy breeds can have semi-high protein foods. I would not consider 26-28% high protein... this would NOT make a normal, healthy small breed dog sick. Your yorkie did not get sick from the "high" protein, he probably got sick from the low quality food he was fed.
I have a 3.5lb chihuahua who is fed a food with 27% protein... I'm sure if I fed her Ol' Roy she would get sick, though :D

High protein does become a problem however, if it is actually a food containing what is considered high protein. EVO RF has 52% protein... this is high protein which would cause stress on such a small dog's kidneys. I wouldn't even feed my chis Timberwolf Organics Wild and Natural- it has 36% protein, which I feel is high for small dogs. However, it is GOOD to have a food with semi-high protein from natural MEAT sources- not corn.

I dont see why you are complaining about a higher priced food. Your dog weighs no more than 10 pounds! You can pay 35 pucks a months for an 8 pound bag and still spend less then me! Try feeding a 70lb and 40lb dog, a 4 pound bag lasts 3 days.

Im feeding Kirkland and its great.

By feeding Ol' Roy you are feeding fillers and disgusting animal parts. Dogs are carnivors and they cannot possibly do well on a diet that is mostly corn.

If you dont want to spend alot on food, get her on Purina One. The smallest bag will last a lifetime with her.

I'm glad your tossing out the Old Roy :)

Walmart has a brand now, called nature life or something like that. It is a white bag, and it's good pretty good ingredients I think it was 9.99 for a 6-8 pound bag, they also had trial sizes about a 2-3 pound bag for about $3 a bag

Petsmart you can get Nutro Ultra, a new one called By Nature, Blue Buffalo ... those are good ones

Petco has Castor and Pollux, natural balance, and mine has Solid gold, nutro ultra.
