Nutro is a good choice, just don't do nutro max, natural choice is ok it is much better then pedigree, ol'roy, etc.. Now it's not "top of the line" but I think it's a good brand, and I have used it before with great results.

Just to toss my two cents in about "spending so much"...

One 33lb bag of Innova lasts my highly active 53 lb Australian Shepherd right around two months. One 40lb bag of Canidae lasts my 67 lb Lab over that. The Innova costs $45 and the Canidae $38..roughly $20 a month and my dogs are in perfect health.

I was going to say something about this as well.

The better foods may cost more money per bag, but I'm honestly *shocked* at how much of the low end foods dogs need to eat! They rip through those bags in no time! Anytime I've done the math, it ends up working out the same or cheaper to buy the better foods. Plus your dog will be healthier, so you're saving on vet bills!

Nutro is 200% better than Ol'Roy.

Isn't it at the very least an improvement?

Some people are this forum are insanely condescending. I'm sure the OP didn't come here to be spoken to like a child and to be talked down to.

Sorry PuppyPalace, many people here are just really passionate about dogs. They don't mean any harm though. Nutro is better than Ol'Roy, but I would still go with one of the other brands I mentioned before.

Nutro is $1.20 per pound.
Eagle Pack Holistic Select is $1.5 per pound.

That's not much of a difference. I would go with the Eagle Pack.

Natural Balance could also be an option. Some people here aren't too wild about it while others swear by it. It's $1.4 per pound.

I hope that helps.

Ol' Roy is great for certain things. When I worked at Martin Marietta, they had a domestic sewer treatment facility there that was needing to up the bacterial activity. Thats right Ol' Roy saved the day. They were dumping that stuff by the pallet load into the sewage clarifier.

As for me, I feed my dog, chickens, rabbits, road killed venison and of course vegies and what not that fellow co workers bring in their lunches.

Thank you Alex and Melissa. I can only afford so much so i'm trying my best to find something good. As for the Ol' Roy she acts funny on it doesn't seem to be that bad she's just tired alot. Last night i woke up and thought she was dead i've never seen a puppy lay flat like a rock.

It is not surprising that your dog is acting lethargic while on Ol' Roy. Imagine how you would feel after eating McDonald's everyday... you would have no energy and would probably act funny as well. Ol' Roy is basically like eating McDonald's... you could survive off of it, but would you thrive? It can also cause some serious health problems. Even if a dog seems like he/she is "doing great" on a low quality food, most health problems will show after the age of 7.

And you really do feed a lot less of a quality food to your dog than you do with a low quality food. Ingredients like corn, wheat, etc, are just cheap fillers which make your dog feel full.

:lol-sign: Do you have any pictures I've missed? She sounds so cute!

I admit I just skimmed over some of the posts. I did see that you shop at Pet Supplies Plus. That's where I get Eagle Pack for my bunch. It was actually cheaper than the Nutro and all that other not-good-food :p Good luck, anyway

Let us know how it plays out ;)

I hope this helps, PuppyPalace...

Our dog, Buddy, was on Costco's Kirkland Lamb and Rice. It's super easy on the wallet and it was an okay food. He was going through it like there was no tomorrow though and we were buying a lot of it.

So, under the advice of Mordy (who we consulted after Buddy became ill) we changed him to California Natural and he is absolutely stunning. He has filled out nicely, he is lean and is in the best shape he's been in, ever. He's also healthy (knock on wood).

Now, California Natural is much more expensive than Costco. We pay about $30 for a 36# bag (whereas Costco was $15 for a 40# bag). However, we feed much less of the California Natural. We started a new bag of CN for him a month ago and he still has another 3 weeks (possibly another month) left of that ONE bag (and this is an 85# dog we're talking about here!).

$30 bucks for two months (and 1 bag of food) or $45 for two months (and three bags of food)?

I really hope that you can get samples or at least check out some of the better quality foods out there. Eagle Pack and products by Natura (Innova, California Natural) are pretty good.

Good luck and I hope you find a suitable food for your pup.

Also wanted to mention that our new addition, Banzai is on Innova and he is doing very well on it. Buddy needs to have a simpler formula that is easy on his tummy, which is why we have him on CN. ;)

I fed my rottie "old roy" for years because that is what her previous owner fed her and I thought nothing of it. I had never dreamed dog food could be so dangerous. Sheba got very sick and died after 3 weeks of horrific pain. We had an autopsy done and she had tumors in her esophogus, stomach, bladder and intestines. Please do not tell me that this is coincidental that every digestive organ, (the one's that digested the "Old Roy" crap) had cancerous tumors. I researched commerical dog food and it's scary! Please consider your dog's future vet bills vs. the price of quality dog food.
We give our new dog "Life's Abundance" ordered from healthypetnet.com
I think it cost $50 and lasts her around 3 weeks. I spent $3000 on vet bills for my rottie in three weeks before she died, so I really don't have a problem spending a little more on quality food. Not only to save on future vet bills but to enjoy my dog for many many more years.

Sorry to hear about your lose. Yes it sure is not right that these so called dog food industries get so rich off of our hearts, soul and money. They are a billion dollar industry and just take advantage of our love for the dogs and cats we own. So I would most definetly go with the higher preserved and specialised brands. Like I said in my previous post why should I eat steak and potatoes then feed my dog card board????

cool - what part of Ohio? I'm freezing right now, just for the record... :lol-sign:

I was comparing prices of Eagle Pack and Canidae when I noticed that the the largest bag of Eagle Pack was less expensive than the Nutro w/same size bag. I hope thats the case for you as well ;)

Now I'm hungry for steak and potatoes... :p
