He does need a bit more weight (he's still underweight IMO, but he has a double coat so now you can't see his ribs as easily. Can still feel too many bones, tho) but you're right, Zoom, it's just a matter of building up some muscle tone.

Verde actualy lost weight after I had her a while but her ribs and spine arent as noticable as they where before, but she wasnt as skinny as Zap when I got her.

She and Verde allmost share a tail as well as ears.

Wow!

He looks so much better than we he came to you. I hope he and dad can work out the issues they are having so that you will for sure be able to keep him!

Great work on getting him back in shape. :)

Puppydog, it's possible, or it's possible that he never had many interactions with men during his crucial periods of social development. He was in a cage from ~3-4 months of age until a week ago, so I know just about everything that happened to him at the shelter, but very little about his life with his previous owners. I was out of state when Zaphod was brought in.

He doesn't seem like he's been hit. I swat at him in play and he isn't the least bit bothered by it. But I guess to a dog that dislikes the unfamiliar, lack of exposure is almost as bad as mistreatment.
It is just a thought. My little one had 3 broken ribs and was badly messed up and she will leap all over you in play if you swat her. But pick up a broom and she is GONE!

Awwww, poor baby! :( How old was she when you got her?

I'm keeping an eye out for these things with Zaphod, but it's really hard for me to tell if it's fear due to abuse, or fear due to lack of exposure. I wish I knew what his previous life was like, before he came to the shelter.

She was about 2 when I got her. She was in a horrible state. It took her a long while to get used to men, now she is a real little tramp! LOL!

Two big milestones with Zaphod:

1.) He no longer barks at Dad, who has been feeding him little handfuls of food every time he walks by.

2.) He's now about 63lbs and right where I want him as far as body fat goes.

I tried to kinda "stack" him so I could get a good picture of his condition, but he would NOT stay so please keep in mind that these were taken while I was hurriedly backing up, before he moved.

He is still down on his front feet, obviously, and I think he'll always be kinda flat-footed. But the sores on them have healed up and he moves with much more coordination now.

He has a huge flippin mouth (my head would probably fit in it) and scary white teeth.

And he gives me this look. How could I not love him?

I really think your idea is what pushed him past that initial level of discomfort with dad, Bax. Before he started sleeping with dad's shirts in his crate, he wouldn't even take food from dad.

He really is changing, and I'm having a LOT of fun training him now that he's more steady on his feet and just overall a healthier individual.
