I find many piercings unattractive as well, but it is all in the piercing. I think the little diamond studs people wear in their noses are really cute and slightly exotic looking. Also, with one of those there is nothing for a kid to grab. I don't think something like that would detract from a professional look at all.

Tongue piercings always bother me because I imagine the oral flora attacking the frech piercing....and then I start visualizing tissue necrosis...gangrene....

I think a little nose stud is very cute and doesn't look unprofessional at all, but I've searched and searched my memory and can't think of a single teacher in the public school system I've seen with one. That is counting teachers I had, teachers I've worked with, and teachers of my children, not a single one with facial jewelry of any kind.

I'd check the guidelines of what is acceptable in your new job before you do it. Also, check the healing time in case it is against rules and you have to remove it daily.

I think where you live has a lot to do with it. California it would probably not be a big deal anywhere. I bet even doctors could get away with piercings there. But if you ever wanted to work in Ohio, it's more conservative, and may offend some people, and thus would be unprofessional. So I guess I think it depends more on the views of the population where you will be working as to whether or not it would be viewed as professional.

I think a small glittery stud would be beautiful. Out of all facial piercings, that seems to be the most accepted. These days I know doctors and lawyers that have them and no one says a thing.

I supervise the 3-5 year old ski program at a ski resort. Lip rings, tongue piercing, navel and 7 ear piercings. Can't say I've ever had an issue. When teaching classes kids often ask me what's in my mouth and after a 10 second explanation it is like an earring and I like it and think it's pretty.. life goes on and no one ever asks again. I've had kids touch my piercings. Can't say I
ve ever had an issue with little fingers tryign to remove them even though I get to comfort the unhappy kids. Also can't say they've ever been a distraction.
I am referring to children with special needs.

I have this problem too. And with lip piercings. I was in the dentist's once and there was a guy there with a labret piercing and he had some very severe gum recession. That scared me away from any mouth/lip piercings.

We aren't allowed any facial piercings (except traditional earrings) in my office. It's part of the dress code. So yes, to me it would be unprofessional.

I remember one teacher having a tattoo in high school (a small mermaid on her ankle), but never any piercings. It was in a very liberal area of California too. That was 6+ years ago now though...I guess things could have changed?

I was about to agree with this. We live in a fairly conservative area, and I've had 3 kids go through the public school system at different times, and I could not remember seeing it.

Then I remembered, my youngest son's middle school Algebra and Geometry teacher had a nose ring. It really surprised me when I first saw it.

My son was attending the art magnet school, though, and different styles, etc., were more tolerated, and seemed to even be expected there.

Two of my kids went to a private middle school, and it would have been WAY more surprising to see any facial piercings there than in the public schools.

I think, Nik, that you need to consider your level of education and the level of your profession you aspire to reach :)

That said, I was in a restaurant and the server had a tiny little ruby nose piercing. It looked like a really nasty, ready to pop zit.

I don't overly love nose piercings (I like double ones with rings but not single studs) but I've seen them look good on some people.
One of the most elegant piercings I've ever seen was on a woman that must have been in her 70's atleast, she had one stud in each nostril with a small diamond in each. Other than that she looked like a typical granny, I thought it was awesome.

Yeah, most nose stud piercings I see either look like a pimple... or a booger. I think the smaller the stud, the worse the "OMG - is that a booger??" reaction seems to be for some reason.

I'm lucky where I work, its a pub/bistro but we get to do whatever we want most of the time aslong as we look clean and tidy. I have 2 tongue bars and will hopefully be getting something else done soon (either a septum, anti eyebrow or my lip)
one mnager has a labret, another has her eyebrow done and one of my mates has her tongue, lip and nose done.

People don't usually notice my tongue piercings, I think some of my friends still havn't noticed.

it would depend on the profession for me. if i walk into a tatoo shop and the guy/girl has piercings i'm not even batting an eye. if i'm at an appointment w/ a doctor, lawyer or senior management/VP for a corporate entity, i'm probably walking out. i can't explain it well but to me it degrades my confidence in their maturity & ability.
i'm not sure how i'd feel about a teacher, but i don't think i'd approve of it in a public school teacher because it may conflict w/ some peoples religious/personal views and putting it out there could be viewed as antagonistic. i'm looking at this from the perspective of the number of times i've argued w/ my older daughter over things she has heard out of teachers (things they had no business telling them because it wasn't part of the curriculum and was offensive to me & contrary to the level of responsibility i'm trying to impart to my children). so yeah, now that i've considered it, i don't think i'd be very happy w/ facial piercings on my children's teacher.

Interesting. I think its partially cultural. Here (as in Ontario) I have seen at least one emerg Dr with a nose ring. I wouldn't think anything of it. I see tattoos on more and more proffesional people. I have seen largish nose rings on University profs. It doesn't seem to be a big deal in many European countries compared to the US. As well talking to people here it seems to be only a big deal with the over 55 crowd. I see enough future teachers in the con ed program here with tattoos and piercings so that future teachers at least will be more modified.

I am an early childhood teacher, so unless those toddlers are really all that impressionable and are going to go home demanding tattoos and piercings, I think I am safe.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think I might get one and if it's a problem at work, I'll take it out. I have to wonder, though, what is the difference between having ears or a nose pierced? They are holes in a persons body, ones that they chose to put there. It doesn't have anything to do with anyone else. The same goes for my tattoos. As far as ears being pierced being the norm nowadays - I'm sure it wasn't considered that at one point! :)

I don't think they're unprofessional, unfortuantly my boss does. (I work as a waitress for some high end caterer) So Im getting mine during my US-vacation, so that it can heal off. I have to put in a clear plastic place holder for work.

I don't see them as unprofessional but I also have been rocking a septum ring for four years of my life.
