Are they unprofessional? I am a teacher. Please keep in mind that I also have two tattoos, both can be hid quite well, though I am not ashamed of them at all and don't tend to purposefully hide them. :D

I think they are in the realm of "unprofessional" - not that I'm biased, I have a tongue piercing and 3 tattoos...but at my last job I was required to remove the tongue piercing or put a clear ball on it because it was considered "unprofessional". Even though I doubt anyone is looking down into my mouth, and if they are I doubt they'd be terribly offended by it.

I don't think they are unprofessional per say as long as it's not a huge honking ring. a little tasteful stud would be ok I think. I guess it depends on the job requirements. if they say no visible facial piercings then one needs to abide by that

BUT... I just can't STAND tongue and nose rings from someone serving me food. I know it's wierd but the nose stud looks like a booger and the tongue piercing looks like a loogie and they just gross me out looming over my food lol

Yeah, I think that is one downside to my obtaining a new job. At my current job, things like this wouldn't matter at all. Parents have commented on how beautiful my tattoos are. But I'm leaving the sanctity of the private realm and going to public and for some reason I think it would be frowned upon, unfortunately.

A ton of my teachers through grade school had various piercings. They're becoming more and more casual everyday so i don't think it's unprofessional. Plus like said above, keep it to a small stud with a small jewel on it (don't do green or pink, they look like boogers and pimples lol... white or blue or purple tend to look very good) and you'll be fine.

lol, sparky. I've never really paid attention to people serving my food and their piercings. But thanks for that now, lol.

I definitely would not do it if it was against any rules, I don't think it is.

Really I dont think they are unprofessinal at all. Especially if you get a cute small one that you can only see it if it catches the light.

That is definitely what it would be. Thanks for the input.

Thanks! It would definitely be some shade of purple. :D

Yeah, I would say they are.

Tongue piercings I could see a good argument for because I've actually known people for weeks before realizing they had a tongue piercing. =P You can't always see it since it's inside the mouth. But a nose piercing... well, unfortunately, it's right there. You can't hide it.

Hope your tattoos aren't anywhere you'll have to be wearing long sleeves all the time! Though where I work it's so cold I might as well be wearing sweaters year round, even when it's 95 outside. ;P Maybe I should go get a tattoo on my arm so I have an excuse to wear a sweater in the middle of summer.

I prefer people not to have tongue, nose, belly button piercings--they can be distracting when working with the kids we deal with. And depending on the area you live in--parents may perceive you in different ways based on piercings and tattoos. If it is something you can take out easily--then just go with it when it seems appropriate. But if you were on the job with me, I'd probably ask you to leave it out when working with the kids.

My tattoos are in easy-to-hide places; my back and my ankle. It's never come up at my current job and the kids love looking at them.

Bax, why do you consider them distracting? To me, that's like saying someones glasses are distracting, I know so many people with nose piercings, of course, I live in a very "do what you want, be who you are" state. :)

sometimes glasses come off too--LOL!
Tongue piercings--I have had kids who just couldn't stop watching the persons mouth to see inside. I have had kids grab at other jewelry, including nose piercings-- poor impulse control, lack of understanding, visual distractions--make it tough for some of the kids to attend to what they need to. Just my experience (I don't personally have a problem with piercings--but over the years have had issues with the kids--talking preschoolers here).

Oh there is that, my toddlers have both tried to yank it out of my mouth before, same thing with regular earrings though.

yep--that too! I really have gone from an earring, necklace, watch wearing girl to no jewelry but my wedding ring--had too many kids yank on things and either they break, or I almost had a full rip in my ear!

Oh yeah, there is that which I am aware of. I figure I won't be working with babies anymore so it wouldn't be too bad. lol I don't typically wear jewelry except for the occasional necklace.

I personally don't think they're unprofessional... especially since tattoos and piercings are becoming more and more the norm in my opinion... but then again I can be a bit biased too since I have quite a few tattoos and piercings... well... I have my tongue, nose, lip and septum done plus my ears are gauged to a 2 sooooo.... ya. lol. I'll put clear ones in for a job if I have to but I wont take them out completely. I can't think of a job that's worth taking them out for me especially when I can just do my photography for income if I need to

I think a small glittery stud would be beautiful. Out of all facial piercings, that seems to be the most accepted. These days I know doctors and lawyers that have them and no one says a thing.

well, I'm working with 3-5 year olds. That is my reference point. :)
I supervise the 3-5 year old ski program at a ski resort. Lip rings, tongue piercing, navel and 7 ear piercings. Can't say I've ever had an issue. When teaching classes kids often ask me what's in my mouth and after a 10 second explanation it is like an earring and I like it and think it's pretty.. life goes on and no one ever asks again. I've had kids touch my piercings. Can't say I
ve ever had an issue with little fingers tryign to remove them even though I get to comfort the unhappy kids. Also can't say they've ever been a distraction.

They don't bother me, and I wouldn't consider them unprofessional if small jewelry was used. Some of the studs are so tiny now that they're barely able to be noticed unless you're staring. I really worked with a coworker for over a week before I happened to notice that she had a tiny stud.

While I personally find nose piercings unattractive, I don't think they are unprofessional. Just check the rules for the new job. If they say no, take it out. If not, rock on :)
