"I am probably the most progressive liberal person in the world and I am personally offended by the sign," said Janet Stillman
i laughed when i read this... i couldn't help but wonder if she's offended because she's been called a "high maintenance bitch" herself one too many times.

as a kid, i knew what the word meant. i got taken along to dog shows and had giggle fits for the first few times i heard the word being used by totally serious adults, and i used it [in context, of course] whenever i possibly could. but, even as an adult, i avoid ever using that word to describe a human. my parents taught me that it was a technical term meant for dogs. simple as that.

frankly, i think the that saying a nasty woman [and you KNOW they exist] is acting like a female dog, is an insult to my darling little female dog more than an insult to the witchy woman!

and to add to the topic of the "men are dogs" insult: i notice in this day and age that it's totally fine to bash and rip apart men, emotionally neuter them, attempt to destroy them if they stand up for themselves, and then disrespect them for taking it. if a husband treats his wife the way that some wives treat their husbands... there is hell to pay and he is branded as a monster. wives treating their husbands in that way is almost applauded in our culture.

i find it particularly interesting that this article cites a liberal woman, who most likely wouldn't have been offended if the shop used a "derogatory" term for men in their name.

[PS: and just to avoid pissing someone off... i'm not attacking liberals! just defending men a bit and countering her statement. and if you have been treated ill by a man, please don't take my comments for more than they are. i've been abused by men growing up, but i know now that most men aren't the spineless monsters that culture and media portray them as.]

What will the children think?
"Mommy what does that word mean?"

"Its a word for a female dog"

And if you have a particularly brilliant little one, putting 2 and 2 together " But why did the man on the street back there call the girl that?"

"Sometimes people use the word for a curse word! The owner is a very bad person, lets keep going" ;)

"Well, why does daddy say that when you leave the room?"

"Errrrrr.... do you know what Divorce means?..."

By the time they can actually read, I'd bet they know the word already, and most 5-6 year olds I know can be told it has a "good" meaning and a "bad" meaning.

:D I know some 'witches' who are lovely, undemanding people ;)

Now, there's another word that needs to be reclaimed from the derogatory meaning it's been given by political inflamatists and propagandists!

I think they prefer the term wiccan these days Renee... brings to mind less images of riding brooms and boiling things with eye of newt.

But theres a word that was recclaimed fairly well actually... throughout history people were burnt or stoned or various other methods of being killed, for being a witch.
Now little kids dress as a witch and go door to door and get candy for being dressed like a witch.

'Twas but a bit of lighthearted sarcasm pointed at the semantics issue, Sharky ;) Or am I being a wee bit too sensitive there? :D
Actually I think you're being hysterical about it, not sensitive... I knew you were joking, hence why I brought up the boiling things with newts in it :p

Now, as for the swastika...the history is not 'vicious'. The symbol was taken and twisted to mean something other than what it originally meant. The fact that, now, people cannot wear it with it's original meaning intended saddens me. JMO.
Thank you! I was just going to post something like this. The swastika represented a lot more then racism and it still does to many people.

And I'd definitely stop by that store but I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford anything there!

The website says swastika's are bent usually to the right, or clockwise, but all of it's red ones are bent counterclockwise, or left

Then goes on to say what a reverse one is, which is bent to the right, or clockwise.

Am I missing something?

The way I understand it is that the original emblem, which meant peace or something, is the reverse of the swastika that we associate with the Nazi's.

Really, Hitler should've been sued for copyright infringment :D

Edit: Forgot what the topic was originally about lol. That's an awesome sign and I'm glad she's keeping it. People are way too uppity now a days.

It meant lots of things and was used in many, many cultures. I don't think that those cultures or people with those beliefs should have to give up their symbol because of how Hitler used it.

No, the author can't tell left from right, that's all.

A very intelligent friend of mine has the same problem, but she knows geography pretty well so i'd tell her to think of a standardized map (which means you're standing in london) and tell me california or france for left or right.
