Hyia took a pencil out of her pocket and wrote Mary on the board at the lookout. SInce people have carved all kinds of things in it and written in everything from marker to paint ball I didn't see the harm in penciled word. SHe carved it in pretty deep because the wood was soft and spongy. SHe also wrote Nana's Happy Place where we sit. SO Mary has a tiny memorial there. I think that is nice. IN the valley some teenagers had written some pretty raw stuff on the picnic table where we sit. So i took a can of spray paint (gold) early this summer and sprayed over it. I am not sitting there with my child and having her see that every time. This is our special place. Since there was graffiti everywhere on it we drew little pictures of dogs and paw prints which faded pretty quick but you can still see it. SO it is my fault she felt this was ok. I just don't see the harm if it has already been defaced. AT least ours is pretty and has a good message.

How unfortunate and miserable that boy must be because it sounds like he never had the love and companionship of a wonderful dog like Mary. That is so cruel what he said and I guess in the end we should just feel sorry for him.

It is so hard to lose a dog EVER but it is really bad when you are a child.I am 36 years old and I still remember ALL of my childhood dogs and how hard their deaths were on me. I think of all of my dogs and sometimes it feels like yesterday that they were here. All I can offer for Hyia is prayers and hugs. Let her know that I know just how she feels and it will get easier. She seems like such a sweet child! Every time I open this thread I cry my eyes out. I am just so sorry for the loss of Mary.

Thank you Goldiefur. I will let her read your words. ((((HUGS)))) I was discussing losing a childhood dog with a friend earlier today and how hard it is. SHe was writing to me about her dog Beau that she had since she was 10. I agree it is the hardest ever. I can't imagine a childhood without having a dog to kiss the tears and celebrate the joys.

THAt's a shame Grammy. Like Coop and I were talking about it is strange how you can have some children grow up in a house that has dogs as a strong part of the family structure yet they grow up not to be dog people. My son said during Mary's party that he could never have a dog now. IT really shocked me. I bet he changes his mind when the baby gets here and he has a better home. I sure hope so.

My dogs love their grandma GG. I have been so fortunate that I could take Mary there instead of leaving her at home. She did better with her seperation anx with a ton of work she no longer shredded things but if i were gone too long she stiill stress shed and would be wild eyed when i returned. She had her own bean bag chair to lay on at Mom's and got goodies. When she got older she had to go out more often too so leaving her there meant she would not be uncomfortable or have accidents. Dog Grammas are the best of the best.

I am so sorry!!! David told me a couple days ago. I'm glad I got to see her when I did last time. I remember how hard it was when Bronki died, and I'm sorry you're going through it all over again. It didn't really hit me until I read this thread... and it brought tears to my eyes.

That's horrible that Hiya's teacher didn't do more. My puppy died when I was in 3rd grade, and I missed school because of it. When I went back, I told my teacher why I had missed school. I guess it was her tradition to read a children's book to the class about grieving over a pet's death. I didn't realize how great that was until I read about the callous reaction of Hiya's teacher. You might want to try going to the library and getting her a similar book... or maybe not.

I know it doesn't help right now, but we all know you made the right decision. We had a pet pug that my aunt refused to put down... it had gotten to the point where almost everyday I hoped that he would die and finally be at peace. Mary (or any of your other dogs) couldn't ask for a more devoted and loving owner. If you need anything, feel free to call or send me a message. I'll be thinking about you and Hiya.

THAnk you Angela so much for coming here and saying goodbye to Mary. THat means a great deal to me. YOU know she loved all you guys and lit up when you came over. I will look at the library for a book like that. IT was a kindness that your teacher was sensitive to your grief. Hyia's teacher might not have even heard what she said, from her response i think maybe it just didn't register. I am glad you got to see her one last time. ((((HUGS)))
Hope your feeling better now.

I should have posted this earlier. I sat down today to put this in Mary's book. Hyia read this when the vet was here. Bless his heart for he was getting ready to walk out the door when he heard her voice. He stepped back in and closed the door until she was finished. That was when i saw the tears in his eyes. I was very grateful that he did this and that he really cared.

THis is what Hyia read through her tears in a steady voice. She put a lot of thought into this and had worked on it while she spent time with mary that morning. SHe had gone through Mary's photo albums laying beside her on the floor. THen she went into her room and made this. I will post a photo of it with Mary's party videos when i get them back.

Mary is a good dog.

We all gathered here to bring hope love and Joy to her.
I hope Mary meets Bronky, Sally, and Ben.
Bring lots of prayers to her, be grateful that you got to meet her.
Love comes in many directions with Mary

THere is a drawing of Mary with a crown on her head on the bottom half of the page
I took videos of her Party. Not of the end. It was a nice party where we got to give her treats like the old days. She was so happy. So if you do not want to see them I would understand but if you do, i hope to post them tomorrow. I still want to make a proper memorial, like some members here have where there is both video and photos as well as music. I have decided on the song. I need help, if someone can point me in the right direction to start, I would most appriciated it.

They are very sweet videos, you can see just how thrilled Mary was to be the center of attention and able to eat to her great heart's content. :)

Earliest pics of Mary and Hyia that I have. I edited it to rotate and it didn't work. :(

Two days before.

If you increase the size you can see the redness beginning in her eye. She held the inner eyelid up to block the mole from rubbin her eye.

We kept it happy and upbeat. SHe was so excited about getting those wonderful treats that we were happy giving them to her so there was no sadness for her to pick up on.

Family came the night before to spend time with her.

HEr boy.

Mother hugs.
