Baw. Seperation between church and state is bull crap. There's a wall there, sure. But it has huge gaping holes, tiny cracks (which will later develop into huge holes), and tunnels going underneath it.

That and you can book a helicopter ride over the wall for a little bit of money..

As far as the motto goes, that'll be shot down in flames. The pledge is another matter altogether as it (from what I recall) went through an alteration already to add the religous reference. However, I don't have dates or original wordings to go with.....just some trivia I picked up along the way.

I agree with the guy. Although noone takes that phrase seriously anymore, why should we (being SOME OF the students) have to recite something we dont believe in?

Because no one is holding a gun up to your head and forcing you to recite it?

And saying something you don't believe in doesn't make you a believer. I had to do an arguement over why abortion is (opposite of my view)*. Doesn't mean I believed in that view.

*Put that there as to keep the issue on the OP and not de-rail the topic.

Edit: Oh and Andrew from what I understand you're correct. The "under god" part was added in later. I forget why but it was no doubt some religious movement.

I remember my biology teacher talking about that.

no, but you will get punished for not saying it. it comes on over the PA in the morning and the whole class has to recite it or else you get detention.

If asked to recite the pledge of alliegence I will do so but I will not say "under god". I don't believe in it and I won't say it. I'm not going to make a big deal about it but I won't just give in and say it if I don't want to. It goes against my religious beliefs lol

Then if we took under god out of that we would have to do the same for all our money, the decleration of independence, and a lot of different materials.

So my stance is as long as no one forces me to say the pledge of allegience or anything saying I believe in a god when I dont then let the others say what they want. I don't care if it's in there.........although I'd prefer it wasn't but it still doesn't bother me it is in there.

Ah, well yah that is pretty stupid.

If we didn't wanna say it we just didn't say it.

Another thing you can do is just stand there and mouth the word "watermelon" over and over again. That works very well.

What is this country coming to? Are we going to do away with every bit of history and sentiment just because it may offend someone? What is wrong with tradition? Why should those who do not believe in God take presedence over those who do? When did this country ever say you have to believe? How does a simple statement enforce government induced religion? This statement has been around a lot longer than the fools of today that are so threatened by it. I don't see why everyone has the need to push against what is good just for the sake of political correctness. I have always had an unclear understanding of God in my mind, even after 12 years of catholic school, but I still see beauty in believing in something greater and more powerful than myself or in the least, the unity that this statement represeants.

I agree with Showpug...I don't like or agree with everything in the US, but I do love my country and get emotional about it. If someone doesn't want to recite it that's their business, but don't take it away from others who do. Why is it offensive to some people...I don't understand that?

I believe soem people feel by having god included in so many of our things that we are saying "if you do not believe in god your are not american" or that is how it makes them feel.

There is a saying by Benjiman Franklin about our democracy that I really wish I could remember! Something about majority......I wish I could remember it!!!

Just curious BB and Nedim....if you were taken to court , and was asked to place your hand on the Bible , would you pledge that you will tell the truth, so help you God ??

No and last I heard they don't do that, but I'm not really up to date on court matters and procedures.

If I was to pledge to god to tell the truth why would I have any reason not to lie other than purgery? I mean I don't believe in god so I have no reason to fear any reprimand for lieing right? At least not by him. I would, however, pledge to tell the truth, just not with hand on the bible or to god.

No. no such thing as a god, no heaven no hell etc... Just life and life itself. No magic or destiny beyond involved. And if anyone wants to jump down my throat for that, whatever. Its my belief.

edit: I think people will put so much faith in a life after death and a heaven and a god because they are unsure or scared of death. Its easier to live your life believing youll be rewarded in an "after life" for following the writing in a book and acting as the standards of your religion indicate.

*this thread is just an invitation for an arguement.
