I asked my vet once ....he said either way . Told me that one guy at vet school fed his dogs every two or three days and let them eat their fill . Said that that's the way it was done in the wild !!

grammy i have heard of raw feeders who do a "fast" every once in a while and it is very natural and safe for most dogs (though i woudlnt try that with toy breeds)

I free feed, never had a weight problem (even spayed/neutered) if the weight of any of my dogs became a problem id probably switch to schedual, however my family has always free fed without an issue and it works better for the grazers (chihuahuas)...

I fast my dogs probably once a week, but feeding every few days seems extreme. I don't think my border collies with their fast metabolisms could handle eating so infrequently.

I do think the occasional fast is healthy for a lot of dogs, but some can't handle it. Some get stomach upsets if they don't eat for a while and others are prone to issues like hypoglycemia and *need* to eat frequently.

Yea I know a lot who do that, I tried but my dogs know when their meal times are and I can't deal with their pouty faces, they act like they're absolutely starving! lol

I never could free feed ..... just wouldn't work with multi dogs . Agree with the pouty faces !!! Hunter's here and he remembers when I fed Chip at 5 PM ....I've moved Ollie to after six so that I could feed and hour earlier or later if needed . They both came to me right now and said " It's time !!! "" LOL ! Characters who rule the roost !!

works in our house and weve got 5 lol...
but again we keep a close eye on weights and behaviour, no resource guarding, no overweight, good contion good energy...

it does realy depend on the dog and person in my opinion, many dogs just couldnt be free fed, others need only once a day, others need more others need less, im lucky, everyone gets along fine and noone tries to overeat and everyone gets enough...(obviously or theyd be loosing weight)
im very lucky also in the fact i get to spend MOST of my time with the dogs, so i know when they eat (in cases of emergencies) they come to work with me during the day and never leave my side when at home lol.

I feed mine twice a day. In the morning around 6 or 7 and in the evening between 5 and 6.

I feed twice a day here :D But sometimes one meal may be bigger than the other, depending on the day's activities. For example, the night before a race I will feed a heavy supper followed by a light breakfast.

Free feed, they get the same amount every morning and it lasts them all day, sometimes there's still a bit left the next day.

They know when to stop eating, although Lucy is making it a habit to frequently snack on the cat's food.

Normally I feed twice a day, but with Hannah being so young and she's recovering from parvo its better to give her 3-4 smaller meals a day. And with Midnite getting up there in age I've started feeding her 3x a day.
