Oh yeah, I realized the enemies level up with you once I spent 2 hours leveling up for Diablos and then he was a higher level.

This game has such a strange leveling up system. I much preferred materia. Materia made sense.

Okay, thanks! :p

Ask him if the card games are really necessary and I totally was unaware you can use cards other than in the games... I thought it was kind of like blitzball in X where it really doesn't matter so I ignored it.

I never bothered with the cards, either. lol That was one thing that I was like, "HUH?" about. I doubt I ever really equip my people the most optimal way, just because I can never figure out the hidden nuances behind something.

But, I must say.
I'm on disk 2 at the very beginning (with just Laguna) right now.
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the Laguna "flashbacks"! ROFL :D Those were my favorite parts of the game.

Laguna is crazy lol. I kinda think Seifer is my favorite but he's an ass. We'll see what happens after he tortures Squall. ;) (I just typed in Leon... I've been playing KH2 lately too. Poor guy has identity issues I think).

I got really good with the materia system. I had it all figured out perfectly then **** Yuffie stole it all from me and I could never figure out how I'd originally had them equipped. I was SO mad.

I still hate Yuffie for that one. :lol-sign:

I was terrible in X and VII though. I only used 3 people in both.

ETA: Oh and speaking of Laguna and flashbacks, Kiros seriously scares me and I don't know why.

Okay ask Steven to explain the cards to me. I've totally ignored the cards because I just don't get it.
Yo. Steven here.

Triple Triad is just a matter of what number beats what number. There's a tutorial in the menu, but here's a basic rundown. The Ifrit card has a 9 on top. Say you place it under a card that has a 6 on the bottom. That card will flip and become yours. The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins. It's simply a case of bigger number wins, with A being the highest.

The card game is easy at first. When the rules start changing from region to region, then it gets a lot more in depth.

When you start FFVIII, you start with the basic Balamb rules, which I believe is One and Open. One means that when you win, you only get to take one card from your opponent. Open means that you can see the other person's cards. Let me see, the rules are something like this. The rules start getting crazy complex later, what with Elemental, Same, Add, and whatnot. Your menu guide will fill you in on these.

The essential cards to get:

Minimog Card - Get it from the kid in the blue shirt doing laps in Balamb Garden.
Quistis Card - Get it from the Trepe fans in the cafeteria. Either one.
Zell Card - Get it from Ma Dincht in Balamb.
Angelo Card - Get it from Watts in Timber. I think you can get it from him later. Not sure.
Selphie Card - Get it from her friend in Trabia Garden
Laguna Card - This one's probably the most important. Get this one from Ellone when you're up in space. This card refines to 100 Heroes, which of course give you temporary invincibility, and is the only way I've found to beat Omega Weapon.

There are other important ones, like the Seifer, Rinoa, Squall, etc., but the ones I've listed will definitely come in handy. You've already got the GF cards, so you're doing alright.

Also how the heck is his HP up to 4000?! lol

I have all the GFs possible so far- brothers, daiblos, queztocotl, shiva, ifrit, and siren. I don't see any others that can learn HP-J? am I missing something?
You have to set your GFs to learn HP-J. Diabolos, Quetzacotl, and Ifrit all have it if I'm not mistaken. So you want to get them to learning it, grind up to the 50 AP or so it takes to learn, and have everyone in your party equip one of those guys. Either you've got Squall carrying two or more of them, or all three of them don't yet know HP-J.

Okay you guys, I'm sorry to be a pest, but I have another question. I took your advice Laur, and went looking for VII, but it's $80 new and $44 used (WTF?) on Amazon, which is well, ridiculous.

Right now the choices that are easiest to find and most reasonably priced are IX, VIII, X, and XII. Opinions on which I should start with out of those?

The older ones tend to be really expensive online. A couple of years ago I bought II (also called IV) on ebay and it was like $50. THEN it was released onto Wii's virtual console a couple of months later for $10.

If you're considering buying any of those new, I'd consider just getting a PS3... because each of them are only $10 on there. If you bought them all on Amazon, it would probably equal out to the cost of a new PS3 (which you can find for $250 in a lot of places now).

If you want to start with XII, I can let you borrow it. It's just sitting on my shelf and I plan on playing it again... but I want to finish VII and start XIII (and maybe even replay VIII or IX) before I even try it again. Let me know, I can drop it in the mail tomorrow for you.

I'm going to ask my parents if they still have VII, VIII or IX at home. They still have our old PS1 and all the games. I doubt my sister is playing them. If they do, I can let you borrow them as well if you'd like. I'm sure they're just collecting dust (and I already have them on my PS3).

Charliedog tell him thanks! Do I win cards playing card games? I've already missed the ones on Balamb. Oops.

VII is expensive generally. It's by FAR the most popular and since it's not made anymore, it's expensive. I think the cheapest we found was $90 new. It's often listed among the best games of all time and has a huge fan following. Cloud Strife is pretty much final fantasy's icon character for that reason. So yeah, the price is up there.

We found VIII pretty cheap though on Amazon and it worked for a couple years (now it doesn't). Lately we just downloaded VII, VIII, IX on the playstation network and are playing them through the PS3.

I would start with IX out of those since it's the most final fantasy feeling one. I like XII, I started with X myself, haven't played IX but have watched a lot of it. XII has a whole new battle system that is much less involved than its predecessors which I don't think would be ideal to start out with. X also has a different battle method than the old ones. It's completely turn based whereas the old ones have timers (hard to explain the difference). A lot of people love X, but I'm not one of them. :lol-sign:

VII is definitely the best though. VIII and IX play a lot like VII too. IX has a little bit of a different feel to me though when compared to VII/VIII. I think it's because IX has a lot of non-human characters (I know VII has a few too), but IX feels a little less serious, I guess?

I like Seifer too, but Laguna just cracks me the heck up. I don't know if you are there yet, but there is one battle you fight with him and the entire time as waves of enemies are coming towards him he is complaining. Things like, "I have to PEEE!" and "My foot ITCHES!!!" :rofl1: But I just about chucked my game out the window when you have to fight the dragon in the minigame...I could NOT get it right and the stupid thing kept killing me. At least I liked the music playing, or I would have quite right then and there.

And, I thought of this awhile ago. They have Cloud, Yuffie, Cid, Tifa, Aerith, Zack (in the PSP game), Sephiroth, and Leon in the KH games. Besides Leon totally not fitting in with the whole FFVII theme they have going on, they totally need to make Balthier a character. That would be awesome. (I guess they do have Seifer, Rai, Fujin, and Vivi, too. And Setzer, but I haven't played that game yet.)

Wow, that expensive? o_O If you have any used game stores nearby, you could probably find them cheap there. I know the one my brother and I frequent for or games and movies has quite a few VIIs and VIIIs for only $10 or so. You can also download them onto a PS3 or a PSP.

I like IX better than VIII, and XII 5000000000x better than X.

XII was the one I played first, but the style of fighting is completely different than in any other FF games. Great game, but if you want a "typical" FF game it wouldn't be the way to go. I <3 it.

IX is amazing, and it is FUN. VII and VIII were kind of..."dark", mature games. IX has silly animation, an amazing plot line, and characters that are just so alive and full of spunk and fire. I love Squall and Cloud, but they have some depression problems they need to work out. LOL IX has its dark moments, too...but there is so much witty banter and meaningful quotes going on the entire game it just makes everything seem to move at a really rapid, fun pace. If you're like me and like witty banter, that is. For example, a line that I think Zidane says is, "Neither cloud nor squall will stop us now." Totally a hidden jab at VII and VIII. :D

VIII is good. Not my favorite (VII, IX, and XII take that title), but a good game. I need to play it again.

I just didn't care for X. At all. But I know people who love it, so...

Lmao. That cracked me up. So true. Though Cloud seems to get more emo with the more spin offs and movies he gets. The original wasn't all THAT emo especially towards the end once he gets over his multiple personality disorder issues. ;) There are characters like Reno and Cid to balance the emo-ness. There's also the fact you get to crossdress and send Cloud into a brothel, you can find items like 'orthopedic underwear' or 'naughty magazines' (in VIII), and you can send Barret and Cloud on a date if you lay your cards right. I think there's quite a bit of humor in those too.

Now, I've only played through part of IX so maybe I haven't gotten to the real story but I like VIII much better. I like that VII and VIII are a bit 'older' than the others in material. IX isn't serious enough for me. VII is about the most convoluted plotline ever though.

So we have this dead alien and we're going to inject it's cells into EVERYTHING and **** the world over by creating this genetic mutant. Good job Shinra. Hojo is possibly the creepiest character in existence.

The only redeeming quality of X is Auron. Seriously hated the cast of that one with a passion.

My sister just called Zidane a manslut, by the way.

Seifer in KH is such a bastardization of the original. It's so sad.

:rofl1: :rofl1: OMG, I never even thought of it that way before.
And yes, Hojo creeps the crap out of me. Twisted, disturbed individual.

And I remember the first time I played VII, I didn't know about the date thing and I ended up by the luck of the draw going out with Barret. :rofl1: I was like, "WTF?", especially since I didn't know it had to do with previous actions.

Yup. Auron was cool. Everyone else was an idiot. And I just about died when I found out Seymour was the villian. I mean, really? Kuja is a girlie villain too (when I first saw him I thought he was a girl :p), but at least he had great lines, cool theme music, a lot of character, and was actually capable of wrecking havoc. Seymour was just...laughable.

My sister just called Zidane a manslut, by the way.
He is a manslut! LOL That is what makes it so funny. :D I don't particularly like him as a character, but I enjoy him in the game (especially his interactions with Steiner and Garnet). Vivi is my favorite, though. Although if you don't like Vivi, something is wrong with you, so that isn't saying much.

Seifer in KH is such a bastardization of the original. It's so sad.
Ugh, I know. I played KH before I played VIII, so at least I was able to enjoy him in KH before realizing how much of a...well, kid they made him.

Had to bump this thread... I just made it to disc 2 on FFVII last night. Poor Aeris... I remember being shocked as a kid after that scene because I did not see it coming at all.

I agree that VII does have such a twisted plot line. I do love how intricate all of the FF games are. There is just SO much to them.

Oh, I've never had Barret as a date. I've only had Tifa and Aeris. This time I had Aeris, though, even though I thought I favorted Tifa throughout the game.

Laur, did you ever finish VIII? I finished VII a few days ago and restarted VIII. It takes a while to get used to junctioning since I'm so used to materia. I love this game once it's started, though!

Nope, still on disk 2 about 27 hours in, I think. I got side tracked by dragon age 2. I just finished that (super short game!) so I'm going back to VIII.

I am so replaying VII when I get a chance. But VII took me 80 some odd hours last time so...
