now maybe we should decide what piebald is ,
i mean there are so many names for colors.

okay just to put it out there , i know zilch about all this.

now piebald is the white with brown/black spots correct? isn't this called parti in some breeds also?
In danes, piebald is a color-headed white. There can be other spots of any color or pattern elsewhere on the body. Some piebalds also have excessive coloring and they can actually appear as a mantle except genetically they are piebalds. Some harlequins also are piebalds, especially those that have the clean necks and fronts. Hence why the genetic test is relevant in danes, a lot of danes in the harlequin family are actually hidden piebalds or carry for it.

Here is my go-to place for color genetics in danes as well as other breeds. JP Yousha is the leading geneticist on the subject (color in danes) and has written numerous publications. There is also several links to DNA testing facilities and what tests they provide.

Beware: You will spend hours reading this if genetics fascinates you!

Actually I DID contact you with questions, multiple times. And like Sara, you didn't answer them. In fact when I posted questions on your facebook, you promptly deleted them. Over and over.

Seems like questions are offensive to you, or you have something to hide. I am "friends" with whoever you are talking about (tnt koolies?) on facebook because I like koolies (or whatever you like to call them). Because I like koolie pics. Never said I condone anyones breeding practices, I was "friends" with you too after all. Nice try though! ;)

I emailed her nd she told me that my questions are answered on the website, except they are not. My facebook posts on her page were similarly worded as the email, I may have copy/pasted it in fact.

I am sorry you felt attacked Ida but your response really isn't a great way to get people to listen to what you have to say or encourage people to email you with questions.. if I found this thread as a puppy buyer I would be scared to even talk to you or ask questions with that attitude.

I don't know much of anything about koolies but would love to learn, this forum is a great place to share information..and if you came here professionally willing to answer questions and inform, SO MANY MORE people would learn. Throwing a fit just makes people not even really see what you have to say and be too scared to ask questions or talk to you.

and as a breeder (and especially one with a website) you open yourself to people looking at your website/breeding practices and making judgements and giving their opinions.. sorry but that's a fact.

and if this is how you react to every criticism I'm sorry but It's only going to make people too scared to speak with you directly and instead come up with their own conclusions based on people willing to inform without throwing a temper tantrum.

I said this on FB to you but I'll post it here too

You are a breeder. You open yourself up to public scrutiny and criticism be it right, wrong, good, founded or unfounded. And to be honest I think this way of handling it shows more of your character than anyone else's.

And just for the record, I also emailed you about Koolies a couple years ago when I was looking into the breed and never got a response from you.

Ahem - Not "mod slapping" anyone here, I just want to say very quickly that it is against the forum rules to post personal information of other members. This includes real names, email addresses, addresses, phone numbers, etc. It also is against the rules to post the content of private messages or email messages of another member. I've edited the posts where I saw this. Please refrain from it in the future.

Thanks!

Ok! I forgot about that, sorry. :p

Just wanted to point out that I did ask questions, and like others I was ignored.

ow edit , samoyeds are doing research on piebald and deafness/
http://www.samoyedhealthfoundation.org/diseases/piebald-or-extreme-piebald-gene-2013-deafness

so seems like white = bad things

2nd edit , what company is generally believed to be a good one to use for genetic color testing?
Yes and no... White in dogs is not always really white. White as in a bichon or a white german shepherd is genetically a light cream. No problems with the health of dogs that are this type of 'white'.

Piebald is the same as color headed white is the same as particolored. There's extreme piebalds (sw) and normal piebalds (sp). Same idea but different amounts of white are present on the dog. Pied dogs can have trouble with hearing if there is no pigment inside their ears. Papillons are all piebald and that's a big reason you see such a strong emphasis in the breed standard for dogs to have color over both their ears and eyes. You also in many breeds see a big emphasis on dark pigmentation on the nose and around the eyes. All of that has to do with deafness.

White from double merle is the most dangerous as we've already covered.

Here's a good link on genetics (Go to S series for white spotting) http://www.letitpapillons.com/info/colors/genetics.htm
