I was at one of the local pet stores today and I saw one of the most cruel devices I have ever seen. It looked like a regular choke chain wich is cruel enough, but this one had spikes on the inside that would dig in when the leash was pulled tight. How could anyone use such a cruel device? If you used this on a human you would be in jail! Why aren't the laws on cruelty to animals more strict? If this isn't torture I don't know what is! Anyway I was just blown away when I saw this and needed to vent to some people who care.

Are you joking?

This sounds like a regular prong collar. When properly fitted, it is a much safer device than a choker chain. It can't close all the way like a choke chain can. All it does is pinches the dog, it doesn't choke them. There is a technique for using it which is important to learn.

There are always debates about using this kind of collar, both pro and con. I think they are great for controlling a large strong dog who might not always respond to a flat collar. It's not something you'd use on a small dog or a puppy. I use one on my German Shepherd, and many other people use them on all kinds of dogs with success. It is a training aid, nothing more. It is not cruel or barbaric.

It doesnt "dig in". Like Dan said it "pinches". They are an excelent tool and work great for polishing comands for the OB ring.

They are used in SchH alot. They also put less pressure on the dog's trachea then a choke chain.

I put the pit's on my leg and yanked it. It didnt really hurt.

Yuppers, thats just a regular old Prong collar.

As stated before - it is MUCH safer for the dog then a choke chain.
It doesn't cause damage to the threchea if pulled too tightly, its a mild pinch that the dog responds to much quicker.

Riots SaR Belgian partner uses this at times during walks if they are in a heavily populated area. He NEVER pulls with it on either, but if hes got a flat collar on he'll lean against it on purpose.

They are great for the experienced handler and adult dog.

I dont like prongs either! GO figure!
I use slip leads.
Its one thing to disagree with the use of the prong collar.
But it's completely different to describe the prong collar as "torture," as the OP does.

She didn't know what they were. You have to admit, prongs certainly do not look like the most comfortable thing to wear.

I'm not a huge fan of training collars either.

LOL I will admit they do appear to look like a torture device to someone who doesnt know thier use or how to fit them. I dont disagree with using them at all. Its another tool for training. I just dont use them. I use a slip lead or a E-collar.
I dont believe the poster was trying to offend anyone. Just was being honest. Nothing wrong with that!

To the poster......Find out more information on that training tool. Maybe if you have more information you can have a educated opinion on its use. Some things arent as they appear...some are...Its always best to find out for yourself:D

LMAO!!! I guess my dogs are victims of this "evil" device.

No really, as everyone said a choke chain is WAY worse. Prongs are great training tools when used correctly.

I'm not one for them... I understand that their not as painful as they look but I could just see peoples faces if they saw one of them on Roxy or Hades. For what we do we don't need one of them...

After using the voldhardt I am somewhat beginning to regret it, well with Hades. Any kind of training collar seems to slow down the behaviour that you want from a dog... Just get it how you want them with positive reinforcement. What I'm beginning to discover, is by using "training tools" it's a pain the ars to phase them out. Of course this is just my opinion. LOL

prong collars do not dig into necks, they instead mimic a corrective bite as dogs do in their natural packs when they are disciplining the younger pups. They not vicious, just corrective.

I personally have not used them, but I have heard nothing but good things about them IF they are fitted and used correctly.

I personally use a pinch collar or a slip-lead on my Lab.

Wow I realy got everyone fired up with this post. I am truly sorry if I have offended anyone. I had never seen a prong collar before today and I had only the information that the pet store owner gave me to go on. Also you have to agree that to someone who has never seen or used a prong collar it looks pretty bad. I am a big enough man to say when I am wrong and I was. I should have done some research before I went off the deep end. Sorry!!!!

Agreed Lawdog the first time I saw one, I thought in my head, "Who in their right mind would ever put that on any sort of animal?", and I thought that way for awhile, until my trainer told me otherwise. She doesn't reccomend using them but she doesn't say their horrible either.

Hey you were right to ask !! I've never had to use one, but under the right hands with the right instruction they are great. EliN had to use one on my grand-lab a few times.
